It was the day after your birthday. You were sat in the busy restaurant, the dulcet tones of jazz buzzed below the voices of patrons. Steve made certain you were early; enough that your reservation had yet to be prepared for you. Nearly a dozen seats set aside for your party. Your chest filled with dread as you looked at the empty chairs.

The smell of cinders was choking. You could see through the window, from the steel cage of the demon’s arms, the glow of a Christmas tree in the apartment building across the lot, twinkling gaily, red and green and gold. There were no holiday decorations in your own flat, no tree or mistletoe, no beribboned angels or shining stars.

You had been a very bad girl.

That was what it told you, after you’d opened the door, thinking the knock harkened the arrival of someone else, someone more familiar…in hindsight, you should have known better. It had been a heavy, thudding hammer, accompanied by the slight drag of chains and the dull tinkle of toneless bells, but you’d opened the door anyhow.

You didn’t know how much longer you could keep this up, you thought as tears filled your eyes, clawed hands tightening around your arms. You didn’t know how you’d ever again be able to stomach the smell of a fire cracking in the grate on a cold winter’s night, provided you lived to see another night, of course. Grey soot had settled into the crevasses of your brain, into the gaps and holes where your decency was lacking, until you were enveloped in soot and ash and cinders.

God knows I tried to feel, Happy for you. Know that I am, even if I, Can’t understand, I’ll take the pain.

The door to your apartment creaks as it opens, and your entire body goes numb as you see the man step into view. The remorseful look in his steel blue eyes tells you everything you need to know, but you ask anyway.

“He stayed with her, didn’t he?”

The tears well up in your eyes and Barnes closes the short distance to wrap his arms around you, sinking with you to the floor as silent tears stream down your face.

“I’m sorry – I’m so sorry, doll.”

“No – no,” you whisper quietly.

After everything.

Natasha.

Tony.

You can’t wrap your mind around how he could do this.

“Hey,” Ransom’s voice brings you back to the present. “What do you think? Wilson said he knew Rogers the longest, but I can’t get him to return my calls.”

You sigh because you’re not sure it’ll do any good. Sam had settled with a phone interview because he and Barnes were away on a mission, but Barnes had refused even that.

“I’ll talk to him,” you remark quietly. “He usually listens to me.”

Okay, this shit took me way longer than expected. It started as out a small stand alone, but then exploded into nonsense from there. So here it is, my frustration for the week, I hope you enjoy!

7 p.m.

 “We can’t sit around here all night and do nothing. We have the whole place to ourselves, come on, Steve, let’s do something!”

 You were starting to get whiny. Bucky had only been gone for five hours, and already you wanted to scream from boredom.

 “You promised Bucky you would keep me occupied, and so far you are failing miserably!”

 “I told you, as soon as I finished these reports, I’m all yours.  I would be done already, but it’s been a little hard to concentrate with all the disruptions.” Steve picked his pen back up, and continued to write.

 “Do you want me to turn off the T.V. so you can focus?”

 “No, I want you to turn off your mouth for five minutes.”

 You glared at him, which just made him laugh at you. Frustrated, but knowing he was right, you made a zipping motion across your lips, and crossed your arms, pouting.

There’s one thing you can appreciate about working with the Mandalorian: he sure knows how to be terrifying to his quarry. It’s not about bluster with him, or wild threats that can make a hunter seem unhinged; it’s in his sheer presence. He’s caught up to the quarry you’ve been tracking together, and now he looms over his prey like he’s inevitable.

‘Course, you’d never let him know he even made you shiver. “Enough with the dramatics,” you say to him, coming up behind the cowering bounty and yanking her arms together behind her back. “I’m the one that got her blaster out of her hand, and that’s the hardest part. Once they’re disarmed it’s all over. That ups my cut to 70%.”

A frustrated little hiss emanates from your business partner. He points that looming mask more squarely at you. “Fifty-five was what we agreed,” he says, words clipped. “And that was only because you had the specific location—”

“Without which your schedule wouldn’t have been worth shit,” you finish for him, pressing the binder around your quarry’s wrists. At least, the metal cuff clicks shut around one of them…
