If we could ignore anything posted in the 2010's, that would be neat. Things I’m ready to see die in 2018:
- The practice of invalidating people’s opinions on social topics based on how they appear to you
Because you CANNOT tell if someone is straight just by looking at them. You CANNOT tell if someone is cis by looking at them. Believe it or not, you can’t even always tell if someone is white by looking at them (and being white-passing does NOT invalidate someone’s cultural or ethnic identity, thank you very much). You CANNOT tell someone’s religion by looking at them (with some exceptions). You CANNOT tell whether someone is able-bodied or neurotypical by looking at them.
The only way you can know someone’s identities and marginalizations for sure are if they tell you, and they are not obligated to discuss their identities with you in order to validate their contributions to a conversation.
Imagine you come across a cishet white dude spouting opinions on the internet, so you inform them their take on [insert social topic here] doesn’t matter because they’re a cishet white dude, except in reality they’re actually a queer, NB person of mixed Black/White ancestry. You have now forced them into a position where they either let themselves be branded The Enemy™️ or have to come out to you, a stranger on the internet, and maybe even explain their family history to defend themselves. That’s messed up.
Now, if you’re thinking, “That never happens,” consider YA author Veronica Roth, who at the beginning of this year had to come out about her chronic pain to deflect accusations about ableism in her book Carve the Mark. People accused her of badly representing something she herself struggled with in private. That’s only one real life example, of course, but this post is already getting a little long.
Please be better than this in 2018.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, YOU WONDERFUL DORKS!
I wish you many a like, ask, follow, and reblog in the new year!

I nearly cried when I saw this.
I hope 2018 is gentle and kind to you. I hope you get to rest from the pain and suffering of breaking through your shell and begin to experience the bliss and joy of blossoming. I hope you are kind to others, and I hope you also remember to be kind to yourself. I hope you are able to heal from everything you’ve been through the past few years. I hope you are able to let go of all the pain you’ve been carrying in your bones and in your heart. I hope this is the year that makes you so grateful you’ve kept going through the nights you thought you couldn’t make it. I hope this is the year that will make you say it was all worth it, all of the pain you’ve felt and dark times you’ve been through. I hope this is the year you rediscover your light.
