I think some people are missing what Aaravos' choice meant:

He didn't choose to let Leola die so he could live.

He chose to live so he could avenge Leola.

He knew that living without her would be worse than death, but he wanted to make her death have meaning, have purpose besides the cruelty it was.

While what he ends up doing is awful, his choice to live was, in a twisted way, love for her.

Why did viren trap people in coins instead of outright killing them? I dont think he had any quasar diamonds hidden away that would let him reverse the spell if necessary (assuming he didn’t k his staff already held one) nor would he have the emotional attachment necessary to free them. I get it for his teacher- easy to hide the mess and no one would ever find the body- but for rayla’s parents? I mean was he gonna sell them?

Nobody asked me but I think part of what makes Callum and Rayla such a beloved duo is because at the core of it they are truly just two best friends figuring out the ugly and the unfair and the painful together as they go, choosing to love each other despite despite despite. 

And what makes the writing so good is their story isn’t “just a silly and unrelated romance”. Its a brilliantly crafted love story woven into the plot so intricately, it spills down and goes back up into both their families, it combines two divided and war-torn nations, and it helps shape perspective to all past, present, and future. It’s a delicate blend of tragedy with perseverance, heartbreak with hope, tears with laughter, sacrifice with growth, and struggle with unyielding love. Both their identities are so tightly woven within each others and the narrative that its like how can they be anything other than meant to be?
