Who Knows About Sally Hemings?

Who Knows About Sally Hemings?

Who knows about Sally Hemings?

She was Thomas Jefferson's slave.

Called his "mistress," but how can you be a mistress when you were a slave, a child, and could not consent? Had absolutely no choice?

She bore him 6, perhaps as many as 8 children. He kept her locked in a basement room.

The room was recently unearthed, and DNA evidence has proven the lineage of Sally's children.

She was beteeen 12 and 14 years old when he started raping her, and Jefferson was in his forties. He freed the children that he had with her, but not Sally. Her daughter had to free her mother after Jefferson passed away.

This is not taught in schools. This side of history. We are supposed to consider the founding fathers as great men, fighting for justice and freedom, guided by God... when they are evil men. Selfish men who did nothing, save that it was for their own aggrandisement, personal benefit, and financial gain.

I would also like to add that Sally was Jefferson's dead wife's half sister. Sally's mother was raped by her owner, who was Martha (wife of Thomas) Jefferson's father.

These people left a legacy.

A legacy of entitlement under the most criminal of circumstances, and White Supremacist beliefs which pervade U.S. Society and Culture, to this very day.

Hello tumblr.

I know Romania isn't well known by most of you, and I know this isn't as important as what is currently happening in America, but please take a moment to learn and spread information about the current issue faced by romanian lgbtq+ people.

As a response to attempts to introduce sexual education in schools, the senate is trying to pass a law making it illegal to mention "gender identity" in academic spaces. According to this law, schools and universities alike would be banned from discussing "gender, understood as something different from biological sex".

Not only is this a bigoted law and an attempt to bring censorship in academic spaces, but it also creates issues for universities which offer master programs based on gender studies. Through this law, university programs based on gender equality or gender studies would be banned.

Press article discussing this issue (in romanian): [link]

If you are romanian, please take a moment to sign this petition

Even if you aren't romanian, please reblog this post to spread information about this issue.

Abolish current anti-LGBT laws and protect LGBT people in Poland, call the EU to intervene

people need to stop leaving intersex people out of conversations about reproductive justice.Ā

intersex people are routinelyĀ sterilized at birth, and the choice of whether or not we want to have children is taken from us before we even can reach an age where we would be ready to make that choice.Ā

intersex people and their families are lied to about surgeries that have no medical benefit, because doctors are so worried about making sure that they uphold the binary system and create people who lookĀ ā€œnormalā€ instead of preserving our right to consent to what happens to our bodies.Ā

intersex people are often denied access to fertility treatment, or have many barriers to accessing infertility treatment because it is believed that we will not want to have children, or that we should not want to have children.Ā

yet, intersex issues are rarely, if ever, brought up in the context of reproductive rights, despite the fact that bodily autonomy and reproductive justice is a huge issue for the intersex community.Ā

if youā€™re fighting for reproductive justice, please consider fighting for our rights to choose as well.
