Mayan Lives Matter

Mayan Lives Matter. Indigenous Lives Matter. Justice for Domingo Choc.

Domingo Choc Ché was brutally murdered on 6 June 2020 by residents of Chimay, San Luis, Petén, in Guatemala, when he was seized from his home, tortured, and burned alive for being accused of being a “witch”.

Domingo Choc was an Ajilonel, a master herbalist, a Mayan scientist expert in natural medicine. He was writing a book about Mayan herbal medicine in collaboration with researchers from top universities around the world.

He was also Ajq’ij, a Mayan Spiritual Guide, committed to preserving and transmitting ancient knowledge about the protection of Mother Nature and her medicine, to new generations and to the world. 

Indigenous knowledge is not witchery.

There long exists a persecution against those who practice traditional medicine and Mayan Spirituality in Guatemala. What happened to Domingo Choc is the reality that many indigenous people of Latin America continue to face, where racism against indigenous people continues to persist.
