when ellie hears you cough weakly and she sees you clutching your chest, she knows it’s over. even though her throat felt itchy and her eyes kept watering, she had been set on getting you out of here.

but there’s no use.

the fire had completely trapped you at this point. the building was on the verge of collapsing in on itself, and all exits had been blocked off. ellie was stubborn though, kept on looking around her to see if there would be some kind of opening.

you on the other hand. you’re just sitting on the middle of the room, and she can tell you’ve given up. earlier you had tried to call her name, trying to catch her attention, but now you’re just sitting there. completely quiet except for the occasional cough.

and when ellie looks at you, she knows. she knows you’ve accepted the fact there’s no way out of here. you’re both going to die here tonight.

she crawls to you, exhausted from trying to get you out of here and breathing in the smoke for so long. you just open your arms and wait for her to reach you. when you finally have your arms around her, ellie deflates in your hold.

she lets the tears fall and ignore her nose running. she lets you cough into her hair and she holds you. she says nothing, just breathing heavily.

“ellie, i love you. you know that right? that i love you?” you’re whispering it into her hair, using the last of your strength to grip onto her even tighter. ellie just lets out a loud sob.

“i’ve always loved you and always will. in this life and whatever comes next, okay?” you’re using your hand to slowly stroke over her back, and ellie hears something falling down and the fire suddenly feels closer. warmer.

“love you, jus’ wanna have more time with you” ellie’s words make the tears roll down your cheeks. she can’t see them, but she can feel you shake.

as the room continues getting warmer and warmer, and the dizziness takes over you, ellie starts slipping away as well. and even though she would have sold her soul to get a few years more with you, she can’t help but be glad you at least got to be together.

something else falls down from the roof above you, and the last thing ellie ever says is a hushed “i love you”
