Summary: To live in an old manor in the middle of nowhere filled with historical, cultist, and most probably cursed relics for a year is part of the will your mysterious grandaunt bestowed onto you. It's all good until the seven men arrive, looking for a place to stay. Or so you've been told. But these men aren't actually guests; they've been in your attic for a lot longer than you think, waiting to be freed. The longer you spent time with them, the more you feel like you know them. And they seem to know you like the back of their hands, too. When you find yourself falling in love with not one, but all of them, you'll soon realize that the the truth can be painful to swallow and they will learn that freedom comes at a cost.

Chapter 1

The loud cheering of the crowd rang in my ears as I smiled brightly at the audience. My chest heaved with the effort of catching it while I bowed in thanks with my partner beside me. Yunho’s face was beaming just as brightly as we shuffled our way to the back of the ring to allow the next performers through. As soon as we were behind the curtains, Yunho’s arms came around me. He lifted me, spinning me in a quick circle before letting me down again.
“Another fantastic performance Y/N!” he shouted, hugging me tighter.
“It wasn’t just me. All those late-night practices you do are paying off.” I congratulated him.
“Alright alright. Congratulate each other later. Right now, we have end stage prep.” Aliya came between the two of us, giving Yunho a once over.
Aliya was another acrobat in the circus, although she preferred being a back-up rather than a soloist or duo herself. She also happened to be my roommate and best friend since I started performing 11 years ago. She means well, she’s just a little protective over me. Especially since she claims she raised me as her own despite only being four years older than me. She hauled me away; Yunho being left behind. I gave him an apologetic smile which he returned before heading off to do his own thing.
“You know, you would think you’d be nicer to him since we’ve been partners for six years now.”
“I’ll be nicer when he stops pining after you.”
“Friends, Aliya. We’re just friends and partners.” I grinned, shaking my head.
She waved me off before forcibly sitting me at the vanity to check my makeup and hair.
“When does the new routine come out?”
I met her eyes in the mirror. Our gazes only connecting for a second before she dropped hers back to what she was doing.
“Good. Yunho is pretty confident we’ll be able to start performing it next week. I’m going to try and fit in as many practices as I can before then.”
I reached for my lipstick, uncapping it and running it over my bottom lip while watching Aliya cautiously. She had stopped working on me, her eyes still glued to my hair, but the far away gleam in them let me know that she wasn’t actually seeing her task. Her lips pulled down in a frown before a tired sigh escaped her.
“You shouldn’t be going out like you have been.”
I rubbed my lips together slowly and put my lip color back.
“What do you mean?”
She scoffed and narrowed her eyes at me.
“Y/N, I’m not dumb. I know you’ve been sneaking out late to practice.”
“I wasn’t really trying to hide it.” I mumbled under my breath.
I turned in my seat to look up at her. She had her arms crossed, expression less than pleased but not quite angry.
“It’s not safe for you to be out at night.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
“Curtain call! Line up everyone!”
Both Aliya and I stood up, making our way to the rest of the performers who had already formed a semi-line to head back out to the ring. I found Yunho among them easily, his tall stature putting him almost a head taller than mostly everyone else here. Not to mention the brilliantly white sparkling bodysuit he was clad in to match mine. Before I could fall in line beside him, Aliya gripped my arm to bring my attention to her.
“We’ll talk about this later.”
I nodded, waiting for her to drop her hand and then jumping in with Yunho.
“Hey stranger.” He grinned, red highlighted hair a mass of curls around his head.
“Hey. Sorry for running off like that. You know how Aliya is.”
“Yeah, I know. One of these days, I’ll earn her trust.”
“Have a foolproof plan up your sleeve Mr. Jeong?” I grinned, taking his arm in mine the closer we got to the curtains.
“Other than proving to her I’m not here to soil your innocence? Na-da.”
We both laughed just as we entered the ring. Taking our place to the right of the half-formed circle of people, where we took turns waving and bowing to the cheering audience.

“You going to practice again tonight?” Yunho asked as we tucked away our silks and performance outfits.
The crowd was long gone and the last show being our final one for the day, we had cleaned up. I shoved my bodysuit into the overfilled chest, slamming the lid down to make sure it latched before turning to Yunho.
“Probably. I won’t be out for long though. Aliya found out I was leaving after dark.”
Yunho was probably the only one, other than Aliya now, who knew I went out past dusk to practice. Sometimes he even joined me if we wanted to work on team choreography.
“Maybe it’s for the best she found out. I’m sure she told you not to do it anymore.”
“More or less.” I shrugged, following him out of the back entrance.
The sounds of the rest of the carnival were loud once we stepped outside. The screams and laughter are mostly muffled while being in the tent even with how closely it was located to the rest of the park.
“I have to say I agree with her. It’s not the safest to be wandering around when the sun sets. Especially by yourself.”
He was right. They both were. Nights at the carnival weren’t meant for day crowds or employees. It was a dangerous place to be when the sun dipped below the horizon. Not only because the carnival was built outside of the nearby town in the thick forest, but also because the darkness drew in more sinister carnival-goers. They rode rides and played games sure, but the main attraction was the Dark Circus. The thought of it had my eyes drifting to that part of the park.
The tent was situated on the outskirts of the carnival. Closer to a few of the performer’s trailers than the rides themselves. The place was dark. It was always dark until night took over and the strung up around the top and sides lit it in a dim yellow glow. The ticket booth out front was empty. A sign hanging on the glass window stating it was closed for now. I’ll admit that sneaking out to try and get some practice in wasn’t easy. Usually, I could make it in before dark, but a lot of times I lose track of time while I’m there.
When I’m ready to leave, the sun has long since set and I’m forced to have to creep back home past drunk crowds and questionable characters. So far, I hadn’t had much issue. As long as I kept my head down and didn’t engage with anyone, I was left alone. I wasn’t curious enough to linger anywhere for too long. The fear kept my curiosity about the Dark Circus at bay. I had heard stories, sure. We all have. Rumors spread about the circus and its performers. How terrifying the acts and the men who do them are. But there are also rumors about how incredible the show was. How it’s like nothing anyone had ever witnessed.
And while I knew I would never willingly set foot in that place, the professional part of me was intrigued. Especially with Park Jimin. Being a fellow aerial silks acrobat, rumors about him and his routines always fascinated me. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to watch one performance of his. I tore my gaze from the tent as we got closer to the small community of mobile homes where we all stayed. Mine and Aliya’s sat on the end of them, closest to the seven additional homes several yards away that belonged to the Dark Circus performers. Placed there for easy commuting back and forth to their tent.
“I know. I won’t be out long tonight. I promise.” I gave Yunho a soft smile as we approached my porch.
“Okay. Just call me if you need me. I don’t mind walking you back, you know.”
“I know. I’ll talk to you later, alright?”
He nodded, giving me half-hearted wave as he sauntered off to his own house.
“See you tomorrow Y/N.”
I watched him go, several other performers stopping him along the way to chat. It was almost comical how much taller he was than everyone else around him. Despite his intimidating physique, he was a softie. Yunho was a really nice guy and got along with pretty much everyone. When it was decided years ago that we would become a duo I was nervous because I didn’t know how well I’d work with someone else, let alone a man. But I couldn’t have asked for a better partner than him. He was kind and supportive and patient.
We quickly became friends and great performers together. We knew each other as well as we knew ourselves and the movements between us were smooth and flowed perfectly. We were in tune with one another when we executed our acts. That was the reason we were still together today. I turned to continue up the porch, frowning when the door creaked open without me even having to turn the knob. Aliya always remembered to close the door. Hell, she even always remembered to lock it given how paranoid she was that some carnival patron would break in and steal stuff. Especially with how close we were to the Dark Circus tent.
I pushed it open the rest of the way, entering our trailer and casting a quick look around. Everything was still in its place, nothing missing or broken.
“Aliya?” I called, thinking maybe she had beat me back to the trailer.
I toed my shoes off at the door, setting them to the side as I walked down the hall. Our bedrooms were set at opposite sides of the house. Hers facing the other half of the park while mine faced the Dark Circus tent and the seven trailers belonging to its performers. I knocked on her door before pushing it open, but her room was empty. I frowned, walking back down the hall to check the bathroom. Also empty.
“She was probably in a rush and forgot to close it.”
Besides, the house was empty, and nothing was amiss. I pulled the pins out of my hair as I made my way to the other end of the house towards my bedroom. I nudged the door open with my foot, immediately pausing at the fluttering of my curtains on the opposite wall. The far window was wide open, curtains opened when I usually kept them closed when I wasn’t home. My eyes roamed the room quickly, looking for an intruder. I checked behind the door and the closet, but there wasn’t anyone.
I went to the window, peeking outside. It was quiet outside. The normal rambunctiousness of the carnival mostly silent this far from the park’s center. I found my eyes peering across the small yard towards the other mobile homes. They were dark, no signs of life beyond their frames. But I knew better than that. There was still a good two or three hours before their occupants would start rising for their performances for the night. Sometimes I’d stay up to try and catch a glimpse of them as they left, but it was always too dark to see anything. Let alone make out the features of any person.
One house in particular was arranged where the bedroom window faced my own. Against my better judgement, I’d perch myself right next to my window to watch as he flicked his lights on to get ready when the sun drops. But like me, he had sheer curtains over his windows, and I couldn’t see anything more than his silhouette as he undressed and redressed. I had no clue who he was, but the rush of excitement I felt every time I’d see him there felt like a forbidden indulgence I wasn’t supposed to be partaking in.
Then again, I was the only one who knew about it. There was no harm in no one knowing except myself. Deep down, I knew I shouldn’t be doing it. Maybe that’s why I sometimes would purposefully undress in front of the window too. A way to ease my guilty conscience if I imagined that he was also watching me. I chewed on my lip, ripping my gaze from outside. Innocence my ass, I mentally scoffed at Yunho. If Aliya knew, she’d scold me to high heaven and force me to change rooms, so I’d be as far away from him as possible.
I pulled my shirt over my head to change for practice when a flash of white from my bed caught my attention. My heart rate spiked at the single flower that laid in the center of my made bedspread. A white marigold. The same flower that always showed up when I finished a show. I reached out a shaky hand, picking it up to see it was still fresh. Freshly picked or bought or however whoever keeps leaving them gets their hands on them. It wasn’t the first time I’d found one, but it was the first time I’d found one inside my house.
Maybe the house wasn’t as empty as I thought when I arrived.

What do we think everyone? Who's the mysterious neighbor our reader likes to peep in on? And who leaves the flowers?

It wasn't supposed to happen this way. A quick in and out. Infiltrate and bring down a hybrid trafficking ring. Saving lives while we're at it. But things hardly ever go to plan. And being locked in with seven hybrids that meant more to me than victims forced into a life they didn't deserve was definitely not according to the plan.
