Rayllum Relationship Progression: Where Are We Now? (post-s2)

I’ve been wanting to write something like this for a while — I have a meta in the back of my mind about the progression of touch in their relationship — so this will mostly be based on my personal headcanons and interpretations, rather than a purer analytical basis, but I hope you enjoy it none the less. Now, exactly, for me to detail those headcanons — at least in more depth — for the first time. Anon, thank you for the request, and without further ado, let’s get into it.

Rayla

I’ve already written about the significance of the boat scene in 1x05, and why it stood out as a shippy scene for so many, myself included. It’s soft, smiley, and a moment of genuine connection for them. But it’s this moment below, specifically, that is when I think Rayla fell:

C: I can’t wait to see that. It sounds incredible. R: Yeah. Yeah, it is.

On rewatches, this scene for me is always the moment Rayla began to fall for Callum for a few reasons. The first is the repetition and the body language. As though she’s fazed by this human’s genuine appreciation for her homeland, the way she looks decidedly away from him and from nature. A private moment, a realization. Rayla softens not just to her surroundings, but to him in this moment. This dorky, infuriating human boy has made her feel better. His idea worked, and not only that, but he’s reminding her of just how incredible her home is, too.

There’s also my personal interpretation, of course, that Rayla’s typically softer around him after this too. In 1x04 and earlier on in 1x05, she’s far quicker and sharper about her irritation with him and his primal cube. In 1x06, she’s irritated because she’s hiding things, but that’s not actually about him. They’ll still bicker and she’ll be quite dry with him from this point onwards, but any hints of real animosity (“this doesn’t end well for you,”) is gone.

Kirito’s first Christmas in Sword Art Online goes surprisingly well. But we all know how he spends his second Christmas.

Cryin in the club thinking about Ezran somewhere in the period of time between "you were gone for a while so now this is a thing" and "go to her" really coming to understand what his brother is feeling and how much he must love her probably by just seeing the way he looks at her and noticing the way he smiles when he talks about how he's dating her

And extra crying realizing how Ezran clearly sees how anxious Callum must feel about being apart from her in such a dangerous time and he probably thinks back to growing up seeing his father grieving the love of his life and didn't want to have to see his brother go through the same thing

I like how Aaravos’ role in Season 3 of The Dragon Prince is to lounge on his spirit-horse and lean dramatically against walls and be Viren’s little bug-pal
