29. Sweat.

Tommy lies face down on the bed, nose turned into the pillow. It's minus two degrees outside, and not much warmer in here, and yet his spine is a glorious, shining runnel of freshly-pooled sweat. Alfie worked hard to put it there; now he wants to run his tongue through the salt, to taste Tommy’s skin from tailbone to neck, but touch is the last thing Tommy can take after he's taken so much.

It looks like he's fallen asleep, though it's hard to be sure when his arms are bent up, wrapped around his pillow. Alfie shuffles down the bed, brings his face level with the thatch of hair under Tommy's arm and gets as close as he dares. There's plenty of sweat here too, pungent and aged like a fine burgundy; he inhales and holds his breath, trying to lock the scent in.

Above him, Tommy stirs. "Shower," he mumbles sleepily.

"Not on your fucking life," Alfie says. "You should spend every night like this. Being fucked to within an inch of your sanity and made to sleep in the spoils."

Tommy makes a dismissive sound, but doesn't move so much as a finger. Alfie knows he's won. It doesn't happen often, that he fucks all the fight out of Tommy, but he certainly knows how to take advantage on the rare occasion it does. He drags the duvet over them both, pulls Tommy into a hug, and sleeps with his head tucked beneath the sheets in a nest of his own making. Every breath is warm and moist, a lunfgful of Tommy Shelby. He'd bottle it if he could.
