Chapter 2 – Irresistible

With Ayato’s influence, Touka calms considerably. Ken orders her release after only a few days with the expectation that he will take responsibility for his sister.

Ayato snorts, “So I’m in charge? That’s funny, since she’s the older one,” he nudges his sister, and she shoves him back, annoyed as she looks at Ken.

“I don’t need a watcher,” she hisses – that scent flares and Ken subtly takes a step back, further away from her.

“I think I’m being generous,” Ken admonishes, “Under normal circumstances, you wouldn’t be allowed to wander freely at all. Her eyes narrow, not liking being told what to do. He had a very commanding air about him right now – like a king. Then again, she supposes that was what he was. Everyone called him that, after all. Even her brother did, which was surprising all on it’s own.

A king.

Something warm spreads in the pit of her belly  – the man who had defeated her was a king. She finds herself flushing, lowering her eyes despite herself, something inside of her submitting before she even has the chance to think better of it. It infuriates her. Those doctors – the men at that dark, awful place had tried to subjugate her for years and it had never worked. Now, this man was just existing and doing it on his own?!

She grits her teeth.

It had to be because of their experiments – the same ones that had changed her, made her wrong.

Still, none of the experiments had ever made her feel this strange.

“Will you comply?” the king asks, looking at her with a slight tilt of his head. His eyes are hard, and she’s sure that he’s more than willing to throw her back into that darkened room, with those fucking restraints if she said no.

“I don’t –” She stops as Ayato grabs her hand, squeezing it to silence her. “She complies,” he answers for her.

“I’ll look out for her.”

Ken nods, “I hope that she understands that.”

Touka’s temper flares. She hates it – they were talking about it like she wasn’t even there. The scientists had always done that too. Making decisions for her, making her do things that she didn’t want to to do –

“She understands perfectly, Kaneki,” Touka hisses. She wasn’t about to call him a fucking king. He may have been a king, but he wasn’t her king.

Isn’t he? That annoying voice in the back of her head whispers.

Ken raises an eyebrow, “Good. Then there shouldn’t be a problem.”

There are two heads in front of him.

No, that’s right. How silly of him. Not heads at all – those were meat. Flesh.

Food.

His arms don’t exist anymore. Fuck, it hurts – worse than when he had lost them before. The phantom pain is the worst part. It’s like he can still feel them there, all of the nerves that had been severed screaming as he tries to move fingers that aren’t there, and flex muscle that had been torn asunder. He can only turn onto his stomach and wiggle his hips, pulling himself forward using his chin. He’s really just a hunk of flesh now.

He giggles.

He’s nothing but a bug now. A caterpillar. Isn’t that what Hajime-san had said? A little crawling caterpillar. Trapped in a spider’s web, trying to crawl its way out to no avail. A caterpillar can’t escape a spider, after all. Not when it’s been already caught. It can only wiggle and squirm, waiting –

And waiting –

And waiting -- until the spider closes in. He was going to be eaten alive. He’d already been eaten alive. He’s just flesh, after all.

No, a caterpillar can’t do anything.

But what about a centipede?

Somehow, it’s easier to call out his kagune than to regenerate. There’s no need for arms and legs now. His kagune was a finely trained muscle, and it’s easy, so easy to grab the two bags of flesh and blood, and dangle them right above his mouth. The blood and hanging viscera almost looks like noodles, if he pretends.

Time to eat.
