scars in fiction: I got this trying to save my lover from an assassin- but tragically, I was too late. now I carry the mark of my failure with me always, and I can never forget~
scars in real life: so I was trying to open macaroni sauce with a paring knife
Olympic Chocolate Muffins! (since the recipe is paywalled on WaPo)
Cool the muffins and ganache completely before assembly, about 30-40 minutes
Makes 12 muffins
Muffin Ingredients:
¾ cup (180 ml) whole or reduced fat milk
¼ cup (60 ml) water
2 teaspoons instant coffee powder
½ cup (50 grams) unsweetened cocoa powder
4 tablespoons (56 grams) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
½ cup + 1/3 cup (145 total grams) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chunks
2 cups (250 grams) AP flour
1 tablespoon baking powser
¼ teaspoon fine salt
½ cup (110 grams) packed dark brown sugar
½ cup (100 grams) granulated sugar
¼ cup (60 ml) neutral oil
2 large eggs, room temp
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup (60 grams) chopped milk chocolate, plus more for topping
Ganache Ingredients:
2/3 cup (115 grams) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chunks
½ cup (120 ml) heavy cream
1/8 teaspoon fine salt
Directions
Position rack in the middle of the oven, preheat 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a regular sized muffin pan with liners.
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, water, and instant coffee. Bring to a simmer, whisking occasionally.
Add cocoa powder and whisk.
Decrease heat to low, add ½ cup (85 grams) of the chocolate chunks and butter, whisk until melted and smooth.
Transfer to a large bowl and cool slightly
In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
To chocolate mixture, whisk in brown sugar, granulated sugar, oil, eggs, and vanilla.
Add about 1/3 of the flour mixture, whisk until incorporated
Add remaining flour, folding with a spatula until no streaks remain.
Fold in remaining 1/3 cup (60 grams) chocolate chunks and chopped milk chocolate, until just combined. Do not overmix.
Using a ¼ cup scoop or measuring cup, divide batter among 12 muffin cups, filling to the top of the pan.
Sprinkle additional chocolate chunks on top.
Transfer pan to oven, and immediately reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Bake for 22-24 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Start on ganache now
Let muffins cool in pan for 10 minutes, then use a knife or piping tip to cut an approximately ¾ inch wide hole in the center of each muffin. (use the centers as ice cream topping or eat now!)
Let muffins cool completely.
GANACHE: in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, combine chocolate chunks, heavy cream, and salt. Cook, stirring frequently, until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
Once muffins and ganache are completely cool, spoon or pipe ganache into the center of the muffin, until slightly overflowed. Serve immediately.

What are some novels we’ve liked, lately? I’ll go first:
The Three Body Problem, by Liu Cixin; English translation by Ken Liu. Any description would be spoilery so I’ll just say some of the reasons I love it. It has a brilliant, interesting plot. It has characters who are complex and interesting. Like a lot of CDrama, characters’ morality is the result of all the decisions of a lifetime, not some baseline in their soul. And the translation is lovely.
The Golem and the Jinni, by Helene Wecker. A literal Golem and a literal Jinni immigrate to New York City in the very early 20th century, and have adventures that are half slice-of-urban-living and half evil-wizard-is-after-us.
Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie. A ship’s AI with a lot of personality and a few thousand human bodies that function like walking computer terminals gets reduced to a single human body, with the memories and personality of a ship. A very angry ship, with strong attachments to some humans. One of these humans, Seivarden, is a glorious trainwreck of a person; loathable and loveable in equal measure.
A SUGGESTED READING ORDER FOR TAMSYN MUIR'S SHORT FICTION FOR LOCKED TOMB FANS
1. The House that Made the Sixteen Loops of Time. 5k. It's short, it's the very first thing she published, it's sweet, you can think CamPal thoughts while you read it.
2. The Magician's Apprentice. 4.8k. Let's get into it. Simply one of the best things she's written, has all sorts of echoes for the Locked Tomb and altogether a barn burner. (tw: grooming)
3. Chew. 3.7k. Zombie fiction set in WWII. (tw: sexual assault)
4. Union. 5.5k. I love Union and think it doesn't get enough hype. Deeply, deeply Kiwi and also quite unsettling. A great follow-up to Nona.
5. Princess Floralinda and The Forty Flight Tower. 216 pages. A novella, get it from your library or as an ebook, alternatively, Moira Quirk does a great job with the audiobook. This is a fairy tale satire, as pointed and black-hearted as you can imagine. A main course & a must-read.
6. The Woman in the Hill. 3.9k. I'll be honest, I think this one is skippable, but then you can say you've read them all. Lovecraftian horror, told in an epistolary format between settlers in the New Zealand bush.
7. Undercover. 59 pages. Plop your money down (or find a pirated version), it's worth every penny. A undercover cop risks her life to investigate rumors of a ghoul in a gangster's speakeasy. Blood, devotion, deceit--everything you could want in a TMuir story.
8. The Deepwater Bride (links) Dessert. Available through hoopla, your local library or several ebook anthologies. Teen Hester Blake, from a family of seers, determines that blonde, Converse-clad Rainbow Kipley is destined to be the bride of an uncanny god. 22 pages and it'll change your life.
BONUS: self-published webcomic APOTHECIA, illustrated by Shelby Cragg. Space monsters, teenage girls & corruption, oh my.

Mount Hood, Oregon by Jim and Nina Pollock
the thing about trying to recommend fiction podcasts to someone who isn't familiar with them is that not only are so so many genres represented but also the level of production can fall anywhere from "basically an audiobook" to "major motion picture minus the pictures"

here are all the f/f recs I posted for femslash february 2023...! each individual post can be found in my femslash feb recs tag. this was done on a whim, and I wanted to showcase works with official releases so folks could support the writers/artists/translators/devs/etc in a pretty straightforward way. I'm pretty pleased with this set!
i really like ryoko kui's dedication to making this elf chick smoke weed in every modern clothing art she appears in
Assuming a situation in which you are walking around outside and a snake is in the path. For the snakes species, go with whatever you would most likely expect to see in your region.
Snakes are generally harmless where I live, so I tend to go straight to grabbing them. This becomes a problem in regions with venomous reptiles. I just want to know how other people react to them.
Oh great one please give me a list of recs I love high coustume Chinese drama , currently obsessing over The Double , whilst waiting for all the episodes to drop I have binged The Scent of Time ,
I almost didn’t watch either because me and Wang Xingyue had a long standing beef after One and Only , I loved your PowerPoint post for The Double
you got it!! here's my favorites! these are all ones with either light or no fantasy. hmu if you want ones with fantasy elements!
MY GOLD TIER (TOP FAVORITES!)
a journey to love. a roadtrip to rescue a flop emperor full of the freakiest lil guys (affectionate): a spymaster who wants to retire, the deadliest woman in the world, a boyband of trained killers, and a scrappy princess disguised as a dude. LOVE this one. powerpoint!
monarch industry/the rebel princess. a spoiled, sheltered princess is married to a low-born general to help her father's would-be political machinations. fabulous production value, great character growth + relationship development, just a ton of fun palace intrigue! powerpoint!!
goodbye, my princess. only watch if you're in the mood for a Capital T Tragedy. a deconstruction of the runaway princess trope featuring genocide, enemy lovers, and one of the most beautiful productions ever
the sound of the desert. a woman raised by wolves (no really), a traditional love triangle in the best way, and a rare lead by the second male lead! love this one, even though production is a little dated at this point
MY SILVER TIER (REALLY LIKED THESE!)
story of kunning palace. i think this one's going to be a hit with you if you like the double because there's a lot of recurring themes and actors! the ML is way more of a mess though, but i kind of live for it. powerpoint!!
love like the galaxy. the first 5-6 eps might be a little off, but once it hits its stride it's so, so good. unfavored daughter tries to make her way in the world while dodging suitors left and right. an emperor who lives for drama and shipping. a male lead who's a lil unhinged
familiar stranger. if you loved the campy elements of the double, you'll probably really enjoy this one as well! FACE SWAP.
MY BRONZE TIER (THEY GOT SOME PROBLEMS, BUT I LOVE THEM)
twisted fate of love. it gives me the tropes i love: machiavellian murderbastard x a time traveling lady general who cant be killed. chef's kiss. clearly on the lower end of the production scale but i find it pretty underrated. powerpoint!
the wolf. if you're into hot mess express, this is it for you. powerpoint!
having an evil shixiong: most normal thing in the world. in fact if you don’t have an evil shixiong you need to really carefully consider the possibility that you might be the evil shixiong
having an evil shishu: also extremely normal. what, you can have an evil shixiong but your shifu can’t? grow up.
having an evil shidi: also fairly common, although there might be a larger issue at play so keep your eyes open for that
having an evil shifu: this is itself an issue, since you are now in one of the classic Confucian Conundrums and have to choose between sacrificing righteousness or filial piety
having an evil disciple: come on man. this one’s on you
Does Maomao x Laios Make no sense what so ever. Yes.
Is it quickly becoming my favorite crack crossover ship that needs more content. Also Yes.
I need someone. Anyone to see what I am cooking. Even as a friendship I am convinced these two would get along in a weird way. I want to watch them interact and study them in a terrarium.
Look me in the eye and tell me that Laios wouldn’t also try poisons with Maomao if they were monster related. Test out antidotes and how those antidotes can be cooked into food. They’d be such Mad Scientist/chefs. I want them to be autistic together and both infodump about their interests while the other listens patiently.
Laios just eating anything Maomao feeds him without question. And Maomao studying the effects to see if a monster heavy diet affects the way her medicines/poisons are metabolized.
Maomao being interest in plant based monsters and dungeon plants to see if they have any medicinal qualities.
Laios learning from Maomao how she works her medicine into teas and dishes and sweets.
Laios thinking her knowledge is so fascinating because she’s actively trying to find healing away from healing magics which is easier.
Maomao thinking Laios is kinda cool for being the very first person to figure out that living armor is a mollusk colony.
Also both of them not really judging each other. Yes It’s weird how passionate Laios gets about monster foods however Maomao did rant to him for like an hour on the delight of slowly dying to foxglove poisoning. She has no right to talk. Yes Laios is deeply concerned about Maomao hurting herself but he also had Kraken parasites from eating raw its meat raw so like. What could he say.
I need someone to hear me and please understand the vision.
