the funniest interpretation of rusty lake is one where the vanderboom family tree just keeps getting more & more complicated. dale's grandfather looks like aldous because his grandfather IS aldous, which makes dale's mother & james vanderboom siblings. frank & laura are ALSO siblings by virtue of both of them being half-lake. ida is a distant cousin of caroline eilander but caroline cut contact with ida's side of the family after she married nicholas. family forest

what GETS me about dale is it's just like. he's in the elevator. he can save his parents in a thousand different ways & he can make a thousand different promises to bob, but it all ends the same! david always has a gun & bob always ends up at the white door. everything is hopeless because nothing is real, it's all just memories & fake scenarios in dale's head. he is always in the elevator. yet he still runs headfirst into the lake despite his fear of fish, he still tries to save laura despite knowing that she's dead. maybe he never leaves the elevator. maybe he's in a second one, & he's just reliving his memories of the first one. it doesn't matter! he is always in the elevator & yet he always tries to help people. like! no wonder he's the lake's successor, he's just jakob all over again. you are so desperate to change the outcome of a hopeless situation that you'll kill yourself to do it. you are so desperate to have everyone go home happy that you will never leave the elevator! absolutely obsessed with him.
