i am obsessed with this new trope in dramas of how important communication in relationships is. i love how in flower of evil, a story about a detective uncovering the secrets of her husband with a dark past, the importance of honest communication was encapsulated beautifully. in fact i believe it was the main, if not the only thing that held them together despite their whole world trying to tear them apart.

and now in 18 again, jung da jung unabashedly admits that she regrets her marriage falling apart, and it was solely because of the lack of honest, deep communication with her husband. moreover, not once does she blame her husband for not reaching out to her, instead she blames herself for not recognising when he was in need of comfort. yet she acknowledges all the times he was there for her. having a proper conversation every once in a while with the one person that's the closest to you in your life, being vulnerable with them and allowing them to see you for exactly who you are is not going to decrease your worth in their eyes. it doesn't make you weak. it might not solve all your problems, but it sure as heck is going to give you the strength you need to power through them.

What I think happened in the 5 years...

Du Sik got a job after university and there he grew closer to a coworker. The coworker's wife and kid (the ones in the photo) passed away and he grew more and more depressed. Du Sik was too busy working and couldn't really take care of his friend, and he committed suicide because he couldn't handle the grief. He returned to his hometown after and that is why he has no job and just goes around helping people, making sure everyone is happy and no one is lonely.
