Whew, who knew a cheap supermarket cake could have such significant meaning for so many people?

For Bu-Jeong’s dad, it’s his way of standing up for his daughter and also asserting her presence to Gang-tae so he can’t continue pretending to ignore her.  In his mind, his daughter is the best and he doesn’t want her to diminish her presence in front of anyone.

Can I just say, I love Bu-Jeong’s dad and how he stands up for his daughter, whether it’s to her mother-in-law, his neighbor, or even when she herself is tearing herself down.  So of course now I am bracing myself for what I feel like is his inevitable tragic death.  Because in kdrama land, you’re either a bad dad, or a good dad who dies too soon.

For Bu-Jeong and her husband Jeong-Su, the cake is just another example of how incompatible they are as husband and wife and how their marriage is rife with misunderstanding, miscommunication, and not enough communication.  It also shows how even though Jeong-Su is not inherently a bad person (his messy interactions with his ex-girlfriend aside) and actually does try to be understanding, he still unintentionally hurts Bu-Jeong without realizing it just by him not being the right kind of person she needs in this stage of her life.

For Bu-Jeong, what was once a source of happiness and something that made her proud of herself again soon becomes a reminder of her miserable reality and harsh crash back into her self-loathing existence.

For Gang-tae’s mom, the cake is reassurance that her only son is not alone on his birthday and that someone out there cares for him.

And for Gang-Tae, it becomes an inadvertent birthday cake, something I think he hasn’t had in a long while.  I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Gang-tae happily accepted the cake while Jeong-Su could only complain about how cheap and low-quality it was.  For Gang-Tae who is constantly being fawned over by women and drowning in expensive gifts, it’s surprisingly the cheap grocery store cake that was randomly given to him by his old neighbor that seems to touch him the most.  It’s probably the first no strings attached (we won’t count her dad’s ulterior motive of making him acknowledge Bu-Jeong lol) gift he’s received in forever and it just happened to coincide with his birthday, a day which he didn’t even remember himself.  Omg all of the characters in this drama are so sad.

Anyway, I love this drama and its contemplative mood.  But boy, does it punch me in the gut and bring out all the feels in each episode.  I just want Gang-Tae and Bu-Jeong to find some comfort and happiness, and for her dad to not die!

Also, both Ryu Jun Yeol and Jeon Do Yeon are so good in this and express so much just in their eyes.

i am obsessed with this new trope in dramas of how important communication in relationships is. i love how in flower of evil, a story about a detective uncovering the secrets of her husband with a dark past, the importance of honest communication was encapsulated beautifully. in fact i believe it was the main, if not the only thing that held them together despite their whole world trying to tear them apart.

and now in 18 again, jung da jung unabashedly admits that she regrets her marriage falling apart, and it was solely because of the lack of honest, deep communication with her husband. moreover, not once does she blame her husband for not reaching out to her, instead she blames herself for not recognising when he was in need of comfort. yet she acknowledges all the times he was there for her. having a proper conversation every once in a while with the one person that's the closest to you in your life, being vulnerable with them and allowing them to see you for exactly who you are is not going to decrease your worth in their eyes. it doesn't make you weak. it might not solve all your problems, but it sure as heck is going to give you the strength you need to power through them.

"you should talk to each other. who knows? you might hear something that you've been waiting for." beautiful.
