To: The Writer That Hates Their Writing, Due To Lack Of Engagement

No, I'm not about to go on an annoying "YOU WRITE PERFECTLY!! KEEP DOING WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND EVERYONE WILL LOVE IT!!" monologue. You obviously don't feel that you write perfectly, and telling you that everyone will love it is just a damaging, flat-out lie.

I'm going to instead give you a thorough, solid talk.

Your lack of engagement doesn't define your talent. I don't think you went into writing feeling this way. I think you started with a newborn excitement. You posted every other day, all of that, and one day decided to look at someone else's work. That's when you saw the staggering amount of engagement, and psychologically began adopting an "I must not write as well as this person, or well at all, because I'm not garnering this sort of attention". attitude.

And now here you are, hating your writing, or questioning your talent.

If this is your case, here are a few words of wisdom. Some people just luck out quicker than others. Writeblr is in noooo way small, it's a very large community, so you can't expect to just hop on the scene and take off right away, but it can happen. It does.

Depending on certain specifics (fandoms, genre etc), some people will gain more engagement. Now, this isn't me trying to say they don't deserve that engagement...don't try to twist it into that.

I'm just saying that if you aren't writing what's being popularly consumed at the moment, you're going to have to bust your ass out in these writeblr streets a LITTLE MORE FIERCELY than those that are. This is the reality. There are alot of other factors, too. Reblogs. Reblogs do wonders for engagement, and unfortunately, that can be a roll of the dice.

But I need you to drop that "I must not be good" mindset. Instead, I want you to just think of it as "well, I wasn't lucky today, I'm going to keep posting, maybe I will be tomorrow."

Because honestly, I personally think that...80% of engagement success stories come from luck. Like I said, writeblr is not small, the tag receives alot of posts to it. You may have just clicked 'post' a minute before 70 others did, and boom, your post is buried. Unless someone takes the time to scroll for hours through the tag, the chances are slim that anyone ever saw it.

This same explanation applies to all the other tags.

But once again...that does NOT make you a bad writer. That doesn't mean people went "this was the shittiest shit I've ever laid eyes upon, NEXT!"

It just means you weren't lucky that day. So what do you do? Wait an hour or two...reblog it again with those tags. You've got to stay persistent in those tags like a bedbug, or your post won't even reach people's eyes, therefore it won't even get the chance of a reblog. Stay. Persistent.

Stay. Persistent.

STAY. PERSISTENT!

Everyone won't like what you do, but someone will. And to REACH THAT SOMEONE, I need you to stay posting...stay using tags...and sooner or later, you'll get that one reblog that someone else will then reblog, and on and on and on.

But it won't happen if you give up.

So quit telling yourself you suck because luck wasn't on your side that day. Luck just loves playing hard to get, that's no fault of yours 👺.
