I actually think that most of the impulsive shit Cal does in the movie ("Which gun is better to kill someone?", the poem scene, "close your eyes and drive") it's because Cal knows he's going to die. He knows that on zero day, he's going to commit suicide, so nothing matters anymore, he could do anything, it wouldn't matter. He's the definition of the "yolo" mindset
