After spending an entire night trapped within its walls desperate for an exit, narrowly escaping death at every turn, begging the clock to turn faster, the pizzaplex should be the last place he wants to return to. It's dangerous. Undoubtedly so. There's the obvious ; the sinkhole it was built on top of claiming the foundation, pulling it back into oblivion as it was always bound to do. The resulting fire from the collapse only further damaged the structural integrity. It was unsafe to enter. Condemned. Even if it were possible to repair the inside, the very ground it stood on was a liability.

That's what the news had been saying — Gregory had been following the story closely, desperate for something to make everything make sense.

Because, of course, it was more than that. None of the articles mentioned what lurked in the shadows. There was no telling what shape the animatronics were in, or if they were even still active. The last time he had seen them, their conditions had been rough ; and it hadn't been enough to stop them. Nothing seemed to. Perhaps the fire hadn't, either. If they were still roaming the halls, surely their anger and despair had only grown. What would they do if they were to see him again? They hadn't hesitated to attack before he had destroyed them.

And what of Vanny? Was she still hunting him? Would she still linger around the place that had once been her playground, even with the danger? Or was she perhaps clearing the debris, making a pathway down, down, down to the basement once more, ensuring whatever she had been in the process of wouldn't be interrupted.

He thinks of the basement, and a chill runs up his spine. What if that thing was still alive? What if it didn't burn?

And yet, despite it all a feeble protest builds in the back of his throat, a childish whine that he can't quite stop from escaping. Going back was stupid, idiotic, any other kid would want to run far, far away. But for Gregory, one thought pushes its way to the forefront of his mind.

"Freddy — he's still there. Why can't I go see him?"

Because Freddy would protect him, a fact of which Gregoy was entirely certain of. The animatronic had spent the entire night proving as much, pushing his programming to its absolute limit out of nothing but genuine concern for the boy. He cared, far more than anyone Gregory had encountered before, with no reason to ; by all accounts, Gregory was a rule - breaker speaking nonsense, but Freddy had listened. And after keeping him safe, he had stayed behind.

It wasn't sustainable to bring an animatronic with them. Freddy was still set to low power mode, and wouldn't last long without the recharge stations. He couldn't leave. But goddammit, Gregory misses him.

"I'll stay by the entrance. With the power gone, the doors can't lock me in and nothing can get me if I can leave. And you know Freddy wouldn't let anything happen to me. Plus the entrance is the furthest from Roxy Raceway so it's the least likely to crumble, and if Freddy still has Roxy's eyes he'll be able to tell if somethings going wrong. It's safe. You know it is. Freddy's all alone in there. It's not fair! I should be able to go see him!"

★ — Gregory, the little shit, has the audacity to roll his eyes in response ; as if he hadn't recklessly charged forward, nearly straight into the maw of the wolf animatronic without giving Fitz ( or Freddy, for that matter, but he has a feeling the bear would have a less - than - favorable opinion of his plan ) any indication of his intention. When he speaks, he does so as though it should be obvious.

"How else was I supposed to get her eyes?"

It wasn't as if he'd expected Roxy to get back up after he'd crashed the cart into her. There was no way to anticipate the way he'd be forced to scramble into the decrepit storage rooms to avoid her, entirely out of sight. Nor was there any way for him to predict the fire that resulted from the initial crash.

.... It's fine. Probably. No reason to make Fitz panic any more than he probably already has.

not that I think anyone is saying differently but gregory is a really smart kid, both in school and just general cleverness. he does really well in his classes. stops doing as well when he has to actually try but not because he's unable to succeed but he doesn't have the desire to overachieve. in general is a really good problem solver. smart kid. too smart for his own good sometimes.
