Oh Boy, Lets Talk Giant Eggs! (no, Really, Im Coming Out Of Lurking For This) Ostriches Do Indeed Lay
Oh boy, let’s talk giant eggs! (no, really, I’m coming out of lurking for this) Ostriches do indeed lay the largest eggs of extant species. However, the largest bird egg known is the elephant bird egg. I have found an image to show a size comparison between one and a chicken egg:

Based on the thought that the most common size of eggs in that image are probably chicken-egg sized, I’d guess that the largest eggs in the image are somewhat larger than an elephant bird egg (rough guestimate 1f-1.5f long?). Elephant bird eggs can be over a foot long, and weigh over 22 pounds. The largest subspecies of elephant bird, vorombe titan, is estimated to have weighed between 1100 to 1600 pounds (and up to a possible 1900 pounds) and is considered the largest bird that ever lived. It’s also estimated to be about 10 feet tall.
So, yeah, the birds that laid the giant eggs in the image probably weighed over a ton. Height would be harder to pinpoint, because some birds are much stockier than others. Moas, for example are about the same height as elephant birds, but top out at 500 pounds.

Okay, but some of those eggs are really big! I don’t want to see the bird (or reptile) that laid them!
I mean, the largest egg on earth is the ostrich egg

and there are eggs in Fred’s collection that are easily three to four, even five times that size! I don’t want to meet something three to five times the size of an ostrich, okay?

I have hazel eyes, and it said I had green. I wonder if the discrepancy is because I’m an artist? Like, if I look at things differently because I’m very consciously aware of color theory and composition and such.
i just took an online vision test that tells you what color your eyes and at first i’m like, “yeah ok like that will work”

BUT THEY GOT IT RIGHT…

how’d they know I have hazel eyes based on those questions?????
here’s the link if anyone else wants to try it
In addition to thanks/credits and warnings etc, I like to put in Fast/Fun Facts!
Worldbuilding is my jam, and while I’m sure 9 out of 10 readers don’t particularly care about diet, or little cultural practices, or the child development and reproduction of an alien species, I like sharing! I try to make them related to the chapter, of course, but it can be hard to explain all the things in fic without being info-dump-y so that’s what I use the notes for.
Is there any rules for what you can/can not say in an A/N on AO3? Me and my friend recently experinced being called out by another writer. In the A/Ns of 2 seperate fanfics. Basically she accused us of bullying/abusing her & using her when she was vunerable and ruinning her love for the fandom & just basically making people hate on us. All of this is a lie and we cut her off bc she was toxic and abusive/abusing us in various ways & we feel awful. I'm wondering if we can report her to Ao3 or smh?
If there is abuse happening, report it to the Abuse team. Without knowing the contents of the author’s notes, I can’t really give any other advice.
Generally, notes are used to inform readers about some element of the story or to thank readers/betas or to credit a fanartist or other type of source material. At least, that’s what I tend to see.
Anyone else have things they put/see in author’s notes?
Trying out this ‘Sunday Six’ Preview idea.
So the following excerpt is from The Rites of Courtship chapter that I’m currently working on, called “The Reckoning” (fic is explicit, Keith/Thace, and this features Keith’s abandonment issues)
Keith snarled. “You left me! I kind of understand why, but you left and I was alone—“
The outstretched hand fell, and the scent of regret rose over the other scents, overpowering. “But your father—“
“He left me too!”
New fandom? New fandom!
Or “So now I’ve come up with it, but what do I do with it?”
I’ve watched Trollhunters/3 Below! I liked it! But as ever, the ideas won’t stop. I am that guy who ends up with a dozen AUs for just about every fandom, and this one won’t leave me alone right now.
Short Premise: Jim and Barbara are changelings in the sense of October Daye-verse, and the plot goes off the rails basically right from the beginning.
So now I’m just sitting here looking at it, because I’ve had two surgeries on my wrist in recent months, and thumb-typing on my phone is really not a productive way for me to write. (Also, I should, um, finish that other big WIP first.)
I phone-typed up a rambly thing in case that was enough to make the idea go away, but it didn’t. Don’t know when (if ever) it would end up written, but might as well share, right?
Ramblings pasted into a google doc for ... changeling equality?
Perfection
I’m not going to say it again: #let aliens be alien! deserves to win first place.
