I'm Going To London! Last Night, I Talked To My Friend Jon For The First Time In Ages And I Realized
I'm going to London! Last night, I talked to my friend Jon for the first time in ages and I realized I hadn't seen him since we went to college together in Canterbury. So, you know what? Let's go to London.
You can tell I got lazy and didn't do the other sides of the tower, and I didn't even bother to set up a little tableau for you. Instead, here's today's sculpture, exactly where I made it. I'll try harder tomorrow, scout's honor.

Here's how my thought process worked on those scary zombie eyes:
1. Let's put small circles on top of the larger circles so it looks like pupils!
2. Hmmm, there's not very much contrast. I'll come back to that.
3. Hey, this mouth looks great! Maybe I should hollow out the pupils instead of trying to build them up...
4. HOLY CRAP THAT'S FRIGHTENING.
5. (after taking pictures) Well, now he just kind of looks like he has goggles.
Lesson learned!

I'm pretty proud of this one, actually, despite my wretched figure sculpting skills (case in point: there's a toothpick holding up her head). I've been reading a ton of comics lately, and today I picked up Fables: March of the Wooden Soldiers. This is Snow White, who is (spoiler!) a few months pregnant at this point in the story. I'm kind of obsessed with her hair.
She looks a little like Miss Piggy, a lot more sullen than I intended, her bone structure is insane (are her cheekbones upside down?), and she's apparently a quadruple amputee. But other than that...!

Today was my first sculpting class ever (woo!), which meant going back to basics and learning a few fundamentals. So I made a few clay dishes to get the hang of using all the tools and patterns the right way:

Here's one of the storage rooms, including some of my teacher's work:

I think this is the first time I've freaked myself out with my own sculpture. I mean, I'm pretty proud of the little guy, but I definitely did not like seeing him in my kitchen. Ick.
In other news, I want to write love letters to Super Sculpey. This stuff is AMAZING. It never dries, it doesn't flake, it's easy to mold, and it even smells nice. Swooooon. Expect a lot more pinkish-beige sculptures in the future.

Happy fourth of July! Today, like all good Americans, I celebrated my freedom with a shopping trip. I scoured the dollar bin at Michael's and picked up a tiny rolling pin and nearly a pound of RoseArt modelling clay in yellow, red, green, and blue. Two bucks! I also got a great starter kit of 23 different tools in a sweet carrying case (half off, due to the holiday), a little bottle of clay softener, a texture pattern (alligator!), a small brick of black Sculpey (I want to try all the different brands), a big plastic plate to use as a base to work on, and a big carrying case to hold all my stuff. All this for about $30. Not bad!
Check out the haul:
