“Lannisport was the end of our voyage,” Prince Oberyn went on, as Ser Arron Qorgyle helped him into a padded leather tunic and began lacing it up the back. “Were you aware that our mothers knew each other of old?”
“They had been at court together as girls, I seem to recall. Companions to Princess Rhaella?”
Family, Duty, Honor Chapter 115

Gendry II
Sometimes, Gendry woke up hearing Joy screaming. But then there would be nothing, deathly silence and he was not sure if her screams were from his own mind.
Sometimes he dreamed of her, and Arya too. He dreamed of them together, before they were taken to Harrenhal, when they thought they were on their way to Arya’s brother.
He wondered if they would have been in the North already, if they would have been safe there.
He had heard whispers from the guards, that Arya’s mother and older brothers had been murdered.
Gendry didn’t have any siblings and he barely remembered his mother much these days.
But he knew the pain being carved out of his chest at the idea of losing Joy and not even knowing it.
He couldn’t imagine.
He just prayed that Arya wasn’t alone when she learned the truth.
Torchlight flickered through the hall and Ser Davos came to Gendry’s cell door and began to unlock it.
“Has something happened?” Gendry asked. “Joy—“
“Is fine.”
And that was when Gendry saw that Ser David had been wearing a cloak that concealed someone shorter than the Onion Knight.
Joy rushed into Gendry, wrapping her arms around his chest and pressing her face against his collar, trembling, a quiet sob soaking into his shirt.
He froze for a moment before wrapping his arms around her, holding her close, holding her as close as he possibly could without suffocating her.
“Is this some sort of trick?” Gendry asked.
He wanted to believe that Ser Davos wouldn’t do anything like that, but at the same time, he could not trust Stannis Baratheon or the Red Woman.
“Yes,” Ser Davos answered and Gendry tensed, holding Joy closer to him, ready to fight, ready to run, ready to do whatever it took to get her out of there. “But not in you.” Ser Davos tossed him a cloak. “Put this one and let Joy hide under your arm and keep her close.”
“What are you doing?”
“Getting you out of here.”
“Why?”
“Because no rule should begin with the murder of children,” Ser Davos answered plainly. “Now come.”
Hesitantly, Gendry put the cloak on, letting the fabric fall around his shoulders and cover Joy. He shifted her slightly to his side so that they could walk and they followed Ser Davos.
Gendry prayed to whatever gods that were listening and hoped that this man was not leading them to their deaths.

Nothing is sexier than the DUNE books asking you to understand crazy sci-fi jargon in the first paragraph, like bene gesserit, muad'dib, mentat, arakkis, melange, and quizat haderach and then after reading all of that shit that makes no fucking sense, you meet our main character: Paul.
ALYSANNE VI
Pine needles prickled the bottom of her bare feet, and her toes turned to ice. She wiggled them, but they were stiff and slow. Alysanne took note of her surroundings. The north? How did I get here? She shivered and made to draw her cloak tighter around her shoulders, but it slipped through her fingers and turned to sand. I am dreaming, I must be. She closed her eyes to try and wake herself, but she couldn’t. She opened them again. A dense fog had risen from the ground. She did not recognize these woods. They were certainly not the Wolfswood back home in Winterfell. The woods were dark, but not so dark she could not see. Dark, like Winterfell often was before snow or rain. A beast rumbled behind her and her hair stood on end. Go , her mind told her. She walked into the fog.
The ground beneath her feet grew warm, but the pine needles and woods remained. The smell of smoke reached her nose. The fog was no fog at all. Smoke. Smoke shrouded the woods, but there was no fire, nor was there any glow. She did not cough or struggle to breathe and her eyes did not sting like they did when the smoke from the cook fire blew towards her. She continued forward. The silhouette of a man formed ahead, walking forward with her. “Hello?” she called. The man did not turn or stop. She walked faster and drew closer to him. She could see the shine of golden armor, and soon could make out golden hair not unlike her own. “Father?” she asked tentatively. The man stopped and faced her. It was indeed her father, as she had left him in King’s Landing when she was a girl. Age had not touched this version of him. Hope bloomed in her chest. He’ll keep me safe here. She reached for him and he smiled, but before she could touch her hand to his, he turned to ash and blew into the wind. “No,” she screamed. The beast rumbled once more behind her and the smoke grew thicker, so she ran.
She slowed once more once the smoke thins. Another figure stood ahead. This one was a woman, and like her father, she did not respond to her calls. Alysanne made her feet move faster and the ground grew hotter beneath her. Unlike her father had, the woman remained out of her reach. All Alysanne could make out was a lavender dress, but even that was a smear through the smoke.
