Well, somehow my dumbass adhd ridden self managed to get into the University of Toronto... and it's a mixture of exhilaration, terror and utter horror. On the other hand, I'm enjoying my biology courses very much!

It's like an echinoderm settled itself into the sand one day and decided "Imma be a cycad".

Despite Looking More Like Some Sort Of Scaly Tubeworm, Rhenopyrgus Viviani Here Was Actually An Echinoderm,

Despite looking more like some sort of scaly tubeworm, Rhenopyrgus viviani here was actually an echinoderm, distantly related to modern starfish, brittle stars, sea urchins, crinoids, and sea cucumbers.

It was part of an extinct Paleozoic echinoderm lineage known as edrioasteroids, which lived attached to the seabed or on hard surfaces like the shells of other marine animals, using the tube feet on their five arms to catch food particles from the water around them.

Living during the Silurian, about 435 million years ago, in what is now Quebec, Canada, it stood around 3-4cm tall (1.2-1.6"), firmly anchored into the seafloor sediment by a bulbous sac-shaped base. Its long stalked body was somewhat flexible, and it was able to partially contract the top feeding region down under a “collar” of large scale-like armor plates.

Say Hi To The Rhinoceros Iguana (Cyclura Cornuta)!

Say “hi” to the rhinoceros iguana (Cyclura cornuta)!🦏🦎

This large, heavy-bodied lizard can grow to be 4 feet (1.2 meters) long. As you might guess, its common name refers to the horn on its head, sported by both males and females. Bigger in males than females, horns may be useful in combat among males and in displays such as head-bobbing. This animal is found only on Hispaniola, the Caribbean island that’s home to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Its diet consists of plants and insects, but it may occasionally feed on carrion.

My most beloved toy was a plush frilled lizard handmade by an aunt's friend. I named it Cera because I loved the first land before time film. Never found another one like it.

How many people’s most beloved childhood stuffed animals are actually teddy bears, like I feel like that’s a thing someone made up. Reblog this and put what your longest owned and/or favorite stuffed animal as a child was in the tags, inquiring minds want to know

...you know what? I can kind of see where the concept of feathered serpents came from.

A snake in Thailand spent enough time sitting still in the water to grow moss and turn into a dragon, apparently.

I thought their feathers were naturally red! Goddamn birds and their birdy makeup!

are there animals that use cosmetics? ya know, not for stuff like protection, but actually for the ✨looks✨

bearded vultures deliberately dustbathe in the reddest dirt they can find to give themselves a bloody appearance that others of their kind find attractive!

this is also the most on-brand animal fact I think I've ever written about, BOY HOWDY.

Where are my fancy stripes?! I want my fancy stripes visible dammit!

Imagine an alien sharing a cool human fact they just learned like ”hey guys did you know that the silvery markings on humans actually aren’t true stripes? They’re called stretch marks, they happen when the human is growing fast enough to actually outgrow their skin, which is apparently something that just fucking happens to almost all of them at some point of their life.”

and another one is like ”wait so you’re saying humans don’t have stripes.”

”actually they do, but the stripes are invisible. There’s genetic code that’d give them stripes but they’re just the same colour as the rest of the skin. So the visible stripes are not real stripes and the real stripes are invisible.”

”I swear if you tell me one more weird human thing today I’m beating your ass.”

The shirt is glorious. All hail the frog shirt.

I had a dream in which I had a cool frog shirt and I’m very disappointed that upon waking I do not have the cool frog shirt. The rest of the dream is unimportant: my quest now is to find the cool frog shirt.

It was a black button-up t-shirt with a large print of brightly coloured cartoon frogs all over it.

Tis true. Here's my old ten gal set up on a standard computer desk. Didn't take up much space at all. I still have the tank in case I have the time (and better health) to keep a betta again.

Tis True. Here's My Old Ten Gal Set Up On A Standard Computer Desk. Didn't Take Up Much Space At All.

I’m sure a great many people have said this before, both here on the tingle dot net and on other platforms, but I’ve recently had to explain this to a family member and I think it bears repeating.

There are a ton of myths in fish keeping, especially about the more popular species, like bettas. Such as “bettas don’t need much water because they live in puddles in the wild!” Which will then prompt me to have to gently explain that this is not quite true, and that when they think about puddles they’re thinking of something like this:

Im Sure A Great Many People Have Said This Before, Both Here On The Tingle Dot Net And On Other Platforms,

(A very small and ephemeral collection of water in a divot on the ground after a rain, usually evaporated after a few hours, and how would a fish even get in there?)

Instead of something like this:

Im Sure A Great Many People Have Said This Before, Both Here On The Tingle Dot Net And On Other Platforms,

(An example of a wild beta habitat: shallow ponds, marshes, slow moving streams and flood plains. These might be described affectionately as a “puddle” in that these habitats may only be a foot or two deep, but they generally cover a wide and vegetation-heavy area.)

Anyway if I see one more of those plastic 0.5 gallon “tanks” I am going to scream.

"Pelomyxa are giant amoeba, capable of growing as much as 5 millimeters in length. So it doesn't seem like they should be that difficult to find. In fact, Jame--our master of microscopes--found hundreds of them filling up his pond tank, completely visible without the help of a microscope. They were so large that he actually took one and touched it. So, if you would like to know what it feels like to pet an amoeba, he is now an expert. He says, "It's squishy.""
