for all the times heās shot at a star, heād never once thought about how freeing it could feel to fall.
kuroo tetsurou x reader (no pronouns for reader mentioned)
genre: angst, alternate universeĀ
word count: 2.3k
warnings: vague spoilers for cowboy bebop (similar themes/symbolism & scene setup but the plot is not exactly the same, a few lines are direct quotes from the show), major character death, guns
thank you @strawberries-and-peppermintā & @catzulaā for beta reading <3
notes: this is my contribution to @elektrosonixāāās stargazing collab! the italicized partsĀ in parentheses are flashbacks/recollections. inspiration for this piece was heavily drawn from cowboy bebop (episode 5 in particular), and the title is taken from ālast words of a shooting starā by mitski. here is a list of songs I highly recommend listing to for theĀ āfull experienceā. hope you enjoy!
a definitive bang rings through the empty corridor, and it brings him back to you.Ā

As hard as it was, you liked your job as a flight attendant, but it was moments like this that made you question if it was even worth it.
You sometimes really, really hated your job.Ā
Your day had started pretty well, too. First time in a good while, you had a night flight, which meant you didn't have to wake up at 4 in the morning to wear your cursed uniform and do your make-up and hair. No, you had instead slept till noon, eyes falling to the foreign view of your hotel room window, which had a good effect on raising your spirits, too.Ā
But what really caused you to wake up with the brightest satisfied smile that morning was the night before or rather theĀ strangerĀ you had spent the night with and the memories he had gifted you.Ā
Along with a heck ton of hickeys, you notice as you look at your mirror.
Your neck and chest adorned with soft bite marks and purplish bruises, something that never fails to make you furious, now only making you smile unconsciously.Ā
Maybe it was the neon lights of the club blinking that made him seem so handsome in your eyes, his cat-like gaze burning your skin, confusingly messy locks of raven hair almost begging for you to pull on them, and pull on them, you did.
Maybe it was the one too many glasses of drinks you had that made you feel dizzy whenever he kissed you so heatedly, that made you feel like he wasn't just fucking you but making love to you, made you gasp when his hands wandered over you, made youĀ screamĀ his name-Ā
You roll your lip between your teeth with a dreamy smile, butterflies fluttering in the pit of your stomach with the memories of him, the lopsided grin, and the playful glint in his eyes that gave you excited goosebumps even now.
He was the kind of guy you wish you had met in any other circumstance, one you knew you would find yourself falling hard for, his smile alone was enough to do the trick, but it was the conversations you had that had you know feeling a little down you would never meet him again.
ItĀ wasĀ rather unfortunate you would never see the man you had had the best sex of your life with ever again, and the smallest part of you did hope maybe you'd cross paths again, but this was a price you had chosen to pay, and you didn't regret it.
You liked this side of being a flight attendant. The unwritten rule of One-night stands stay as one-night stands.Ā
There was no way theyĀ couldn't; you couldn't meet them even if you wanted to since all your one-night stands were people you met in clubs you visited, knowing for sure you wouldn't even be in the country by the next morning.
Stress-free, satisfied life.
So your reaction was more than justified, you decided, when you saw the pair of golden eyes that hadn't left your mind since that morning right there, staring at you from the comfort of his seat, looking at you with an innocently surprised gaze.Ā
A burgundy sleep mask pushed up, pushing his raven locks away from his face, eyes heavy and slightly lidded from the late hour and the exhaustion of flying for hours, he looks positively handsome- even more so than you remember.Ā
Your gaze unconsciously falls on his lips when he smiles; you find yourself speaking before you can stop yourself. "You have to be fucking kidding me."
Your hands fly up to your agape mouth, eyes wide in mortification, though Kuroo doesn't know if it's from what you said or just seeingĀ him, you look like you might jump from the emergency exit.Ā
"Oh, uh, hi." The man smiles awkwardly, hand going to his neck with nervousness, eyes wandering over your figure. "Funny seeing you here."
He looks adorable, you have to admit, brows tilted upwards, mouth slightly agape with a ghost of a smile, and widened eyes with surprise.Ā
"Oh my god," you groan as you stand still, holding mattresses and pillows in your hand, "you have to be kidding me."
"Uh, no?" Kuroo tries to find an answer to that reaction with an awkward laugh.Ā
"Holy shit," you curse, biting your lip, "what are you doing here?" You whisper-yell, minding of everyone else sleeping soundly but the two of you. You know you have no right to get mad, but he doesn't seem offended, instead slightly amused with a quirk of his brow and snarky glint in his gaze.
"Flying back home?" He tells you with a chuckle, leaning forward to whisper in your ear. "I had told you last night, remember? When you-"
"No!" you squeak suddenly, hands flying over to his mouth to stop him from saying whatever he was going to say. "When you asked me about my profession." He speaks from beneath your hand, lips moving under your touch and causing your face to heat up. "Get your head out of the gutter."
You pull your fingers away from his face, skin slightly bumpy from a day-old beard.Ā
"Oh my god, I'm very sorry, sir." You finally find your composure, reminding yourselfĀ whereĀ you are. "I'm very sorry for my behaviour, that was unacceptable, I'm sending another flight attendant right away, and if you would want to file a complaint-"
"No- no, no." Kuroo stops you from finishing your sentence. "No, I'm not going to file any complaints, don't- don't worry about it." He laughs at your panic-stricken face. "I'm very sorry for the inconvinience, sir." You mutter under your breath, setting to work what you came to do here for. "I'll finish right away and I promise you won't have to see me ever again."
You miss the frown that settles on his lips when you tell him that, tired gaze falling on his hands. "If that's what you want." Kuroo shrugs as an answer, and it's only then when you raise your gaze to his and see the slight hurt.
"N-no!" You blurt out involuntarily, Ā hands flying to your mouth a second too late. "I- I meant- for you," you try to set it right as a grin starts spreading across his face, "ifĀ youĀ don't want to see me."
For a few seconds, Kuroo stays silent at that, leaving you alone with the loud thundering of your heart in your chest.Ā
"You know," he finally tells you, his grin still evident on his face. "I'm a little afraid of flying."
He looks at you as if that means a big grand gesture, laughing when you raise your brows questioningly.Ā
"Wouldn't you keep me a little company?"
Even then it takes you a few seconds to process what he means, but when you do, you can't help the airy chuckle that passes your lips. "We've been in the air for four hours, sir."
"And? Can't a man be afraid of flying after four hours? I'm so scared, look at my hands trembling!" He fakes a panicked expression as you only laugh more, "I need someone to talk to me and get me through the flight."
"Very well, then," you smile at the man, "I guess I'll have to keep you company, sir."
