Short Story 2: Part 3

Short Story 2: part 3

The walk home (final)

(Segment 1: Daniels Pov: An Awkard situation)

Daniel was just speechless. He did nothing but look at the girl. It took a few moments of silence before he even said something. "I- came here to draw flowers," he whispered, embarrassed of the situation, and how dumb his excuse sounded. Who draws flowers in a very dark forest in the middle of the night?

The girl smiled, "Thats nice, it seems you're really good at doing that," she said pointing to his open sketch. Daniel blushing red, "I guess, it's not my best work." he said shrugging it off.

The lady then just gave him a blank stare, did he say something wrong? Chuckling, the girl looked at the flower he was drawing, "It's a pretty flower, isn't it?" she said stroking some of the petals. Daniel just nodded in agreement, and the girl raised an eyebrow. "You're not much of a talker huh?" She mumbled, and Daniel looked up at her.

"Sorry, I'm just a little startled right now, and tired," He said rubbing his eyes, "You don't expect to meet a person in the forest this late at night," he chuckled to himself. The girl blushed, "I'm sorry- did I scare you?" She mumbled out embarrassed. Daniel rubbed his neck, "maybe a little bit, I didn't expect company, you kind of came out of nowhere" he said blushing as well. Both then stared at each other, their faces turning red. It seemed they were both embarrassed by the situation.

Daniel then felt a surge of confidence all sudden, it was actually nice talking to this girl. "So why are you here this late at night- if you don't mind me asking," He asked, trying to break the silence. The girl smiled, "I was getting some fresh air, the forest is usually peaceful at night," she said looking at the moon.

"Aren't you scared of all the animals that could be around here at night," He found himself blurting out. She looked at him with confusion, "I could be asking you the same thing," she giggled as she kept on, "the animals are usually calmer at night, Elora isn't really known for hostile animals." Daniel blushed out of embarrassment then smiled, "yeah I guess you're right, there's nothing to be really scared of," He chuckled, "I'm just a scaredy cat."

The girl laughed, "Then you should be glad you have someone to protect you then," she teased him, "don't want to get eaten now." "I'm not that weak," Daniel rolled his eyes but laughed along with her. He did not regret going into the forest now; it seemed worth it, something that wasn't a regular feel for him. He was weirdly comfortable with the situation; it felt nice to goof around like this.

"If you don't mind me asking, would it be ok if we did this again some other time?" Daniel said chuckling nervously, it was weird to ask a stranger this question, but he thought they could be genuine friends. They both seemed to get along great, and he had been needing an excuse to get out more often. The girl seemed lost in her own thoughts for a minute.

(Segment 2: Claires Pov: Befriending)

Claire was stunned, he wanted to do this again? Did he want to become friends with her? She was flattered, she loved making new friends, but just a few minutes ago she was staring at him non-stop. She blushed embarrassed; she really did not want him to know that. The thought of it could make her explore. Claire then snapped back to reality, and looked at Daniel who raised an eyebrow, "So is that a yes or.," he mumbled to her.

"Oh Umm, yeah I would like to do this again," She chuckled nervously, she did not usually get nervous like this, unless it was with the few exceptions of family, or other ordeals. Daniel sighed, "it's fine if you don't want to, I understand, were strangers after all," he looked at her with a smile, "it's been nice talking to you though" Claire looked at him with surprise, "I didn't say I didn't want to be friends," She frowned, what was he assuming?

The boy blushed, "Sorry- it's just when people say it like that makes me think they don't want to be friends with me," he admitted nervously. She smiled, "it's fine, it's hard to tell if people actually want to be friends with you, I've been there before too," She told him, "And I would love to do this again."

He looked at her and just smiled, " glad to have someone relate," he chuckled, "It's been starting to get lonely these days," He sighed sarcastically. Claire giggled, "Then you should be glad I snook up on you," she said. Daniel snickered, "Yeah, it wasn't creepy at all" he grinned, making Claire feel butterflies in her stomach, "What's your name anyways," the boy looked at her with curiosity.

Claire looked at him, trying not to laugh, "its Claire the creepo, what's your poor victim of mine," she asked amused. He chuckled, "Its Daniel Elsmere, nice to meet ya," He smiled in a friendly manner and put out a hand. Claire grinned back and shook his hand; she officially made a new friend today. She was glad to have gone into the forest today, she got to meet a cute boy. Then a ringing sound filled the void, it seemed to be coming from her phone, "sorry got to take this," She excused herself before reaching into her pocket, grabbing her phone to answer. Daniel just nodded then picked up his drawing to sketch again. Looking at the caller ID, Claire could feel a cold sweat up her back.

She took a deep breath before answering the phone, "Hi sis," she whispered. "Claire, what are you still doing out? It’s midnight by now," Her sister Heather said in a worried tone. Claire sighed, "Sorry, I wasn't checking the time, I will be back soon," she promised. Her sister let out a small sign of relief, "that's good, mom and dad won't stop bugging me to tell you that," Heather said in an annoyed tone, "did walking it off work?" She asked. Claire beamed, "It really did, you were right. Getting my mind off Ava really helped," she softly smiled. "Thats why everyone listens to me," Heather playfully scoffed, "I'm always right." Claire rolled her eyes, "Sure you are heather," she sarcastically said.

Heather chuckled, "anyways you take your time, I already texted dad you are staying out late, "she grinned. "Thanks sis," Claire said in gratitude, "thanks for doing that." "You're welcome, I think I'm going to go to sleep now. I got a photo shoot tomorrow," Her sister said drowsy. "Oh ok, good night sis," Claire said before hanging up the phone.

"Was that your sister?" Daniel looked at her with curiosity, forgetting the drawing in his hands. Claire nodded, leaning into some of the flowers that were in the flower bed, "She called to see if I was ok, and if getting fresh air helped clear my mind of the things happening lately," she said looking at him, was she being too straight forward? "Oh, that's nice of her," Daniel softly smiled, "It’s nice that your sister cares about you, clearing your mind always helps" Claire could see Daniel hesitated to say something else.

"Is there something wrong?" Claire raised an eyebrow, he seemed confident during their earlier conversation, what happened? Daniel instinctively rubbed the back of his neck, "I know this isn't my place to know, but what happened?" He mumbled to her, knowing he might have crossed the line asking someone he just met that. Claire gave out a small sigh, "you know how I have one sister right?" Claire asked him. "You were on call with her," Daniel said answering her back. "Well," Claire started, "I also have a younger sister, and she recently went through a breakup," she grimaced, feeling loss of words, and turned her head away for the second.

Just thinking about it could make her vomit. She still remembers her sister coming home crying, and eyes all red. She swore to herself to never let her sister be in that state again. Claire was now shaking with rage, she just needed to calm down, taking a deep breath, she looked at Daniel, whose eyes with full of remorse. "That bad?" He asked. Claire nodded, "you can say it really affected my sister, and me as well," she let out a disheartened chuckle, "I couldn't stop thinking about it."

Daniel softly smiled, moving closer to her, "You don't have to tell me more," he said looking into her grey eyes, "I'm sorry that happened to your sister, it must be hard for all of you." Claire just smiled back in gratitude, it is nice that he cared, but if she ever saw the man who hurt her sister again, and let’s just say that would not be pretty. It was silent for the moment until Daniel spoke up, trying to change the topic, "I can tell you something about myself, if you want," he said bashfully. "Sure," Claire said plainly, still shaken from the earlier topic.

"Well, I like to do art, it's pretty much my hobby" He said picking up his sketch pad to show her all his drawing he drew in his sketch book, " My life's passion basically." Claire beamed a bit, "I could clearly see that when I first saw you," she paused, "do you do it as a job too? With talent like yours it-" "No sadly not," he answered, interrupting her sentence, "It's just a hobby for me, I actually work an office job," He looked down at some flowers. "An office job?" She looked at him surprised, he did not really look like a guy that worked one, and usually people worked office jobs after college, and he didn't really look much older than her, or was he? "What sector?" She asked him, curious to know more about his job. "Ehm well," He stammered, it looked like he was mentally preparing for something.

(Segment 3: Daniels Pov: Emotion Coaster)

"I'm a Ceo," he said with a nervous whisper, hopefully this would distract her from their earlier conversation, he still felt bad for asking details. Claire just stared at him wide eyed, with enough silence to make even him uncomfortable, and he preferred the sound. She looked like she wanted to say something but couldn't, and just brushed the flower petals next to her.

"How old are you exactly? "She asked slowly, still fazed from what she had just heard. "I'm about twenty," he said with a slight anxious chuckle, "Crazy for someone my age, I know" Claire eyes then glimmered with admiration," you must be a genius for being a CEO at 20" she exclaimed amazed. Daniel blushed, shifting around a bit on the grass path they were sitting on. "Thanks, but I actually was given the role by my parents," He admitted embarrassed, wondering what she thought of him now.

She raised an eyebrow confused, "Oh," she said astonished, "I thought that only happened in stories?" Claire looked at him in suspension, "so you're one of those rich boys I presume?" Daniel was taken aback. Was he that transparent? Claire giggled, "you clearly haven't read the type of genre," she told him. Daniel blushed again, "I have, it's just not every day a person tells me something about myself that's correct," he paused for the moment, "Do you really think I'm one of them," He asked her. She looked at him like he was very dumb, "isn't it oblivious?" she tilted her head bewildered.

Daniel scoffed, "At least I don't show it off like some prize," he said flustered. Claire rolled her eyes in amusement, "sure you don't, being a CEO at twenty is totally normal," she said sarcastically. Daniel folded his arms into his lap, "Fine I guess I am one, I have been babied my whole life, I admit that," he confessed, looking down at the ground, "I guess I am one of them." Claire shifted towards him, "it isn't really a bad thing, the guys in those stories are usually snobs," she explained. Daneil looked at her, "so if your Claire the Creepo, then I'm Daniel the snob?" He turned his head to her, a silly expression plastered on his face.

She shook her head in disproval, "Doesn't really rhyme," she said, "but again if you want me to call you that I could," she shrugged. Daniel blushed yet again and waved his hands in denial, "please don't call me that," he exclaimed. "Too late," Claire mused, "Your stuck with it forever now," she smiled with satisfaction, " should have listened to me." Daniel crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow, "you didn't even give me the chance," he said holding a chuckle.

Claire sighed, "maybe it's because you're too slow," she teased. Narrowing his eyes, he stared at her, "really then," he said getting up with his sketch pad and pencil in hand. "Do you have to go now?" She asked him in a worried tone, as she thought she had gone too far with the joke. "Yeah, for sure," he replied, "but if you want me to stay, then I guess you're going to have to catch me," he said turning toward the woods running on the grass path of the flower beds. Claire was studded for a moment before getting up, "hey wait for me, that's not fair!" she said running after him, making the flowers she was sitting next to slightly move.

As they both ran into the woods, the moonlight seemed to get dimer and dimer. Daniel could barely see a thing, but he knew that he had to outrun Claire. Sadly, little did he know Claire was very athletic, and she caught up to him in no time. Reaching out her hand, Claire was about to touch his shoulder when a twig made her stumble. Daniel saw her fall flat on her face, and it looked like it hurt.

"Oww-," She groaned as she lifted her head up, "why do I keep stepping on twigs today?" Laughing, Daniel helped her up, "looks like I won," He grinned with contentment. "Thats only because i tripped," she argued back smiling, "I would have gotten you by now," she said sticking out her tongue. He smirked, "it still counts," he teased. Claire rolled her eyes, then looked at the surroundings around them, "geez its dark," she said in surprise, "have we been out here that long?" Darkness swallowed them whole; they could barely see each other. "Do you have your phone?" Daniel asked, "I don't have mine," he said nervously chuckling. He could not see it, but Claire was giving him a dumbfounded look, "I- why?" she murmured in disbelief.

Daniel scratched his head, "I was focused on- you know, my art," he replied, feeling very stupid at that moment, and decided not to tell her that he also parked his car in the middle of nowhere to draw the wilderness. Claire just stared at him, then chuckled, "wow, umm, that's dedication right there," she mumbled awkwardly, then fetched her phone from her back pocket. Turning it on, the phone's screen illuminated a bit of their surroundings, enough so they could see their faces.

Looking at the screen, Claire looked shocked, "its 1:am already?" she blurted out. Daniel eyes widened, had it been that long? "I got to go," Claire said in worry, "I got to head to my sister's photoshoot tomorrow" "Your sisters a model?" Daniel asked. "Yeah, she is" She said in a hurry, "can I have your sketch book and pencil for a moment," she said gesturing to his hand. "Sure," he said giving her his stuff. Flipping to the first page, Claire wrote her phone number, "Call me some time," she said as she handed them both back. Daniel smiled, "Definitely."

Claire beamed back at him, then turned towards the opposite side of the dark woods, "Hope to see you again Daniel," she said before pausing, "do you need help getting back?" She asked him worried. "I'll be fine," He reassured her, "it shouldn't be that hard to find my car." Claire just raised an eyebrow, and shrugged, "if you say so," she replied, "Bye Daniel, see you soon," she said running off into the distance.

Daniel stood there in silence, talking to her was great, but also draining. Rubbing his tired eyes, he looked around for a bit, wondering where to go. "I'm screwed," he murmured to himself. Sighing, he started walking in a direction. Just then someone tapped him on the shoulder, and he jumped in shock. Turning around to see who to was, Claire was staring right at him, "You need help, don't you," she said. "Claire- you need to stop doing that," he catched his breath, "you gave me a heart attack." Claire flushed, "Sorry- I do need to stop doing that, I just felt bad leaving you here," she said messing with a lock of her hair.

"Don't you have your sister's photoshoot to go to?" He reminded her. Claire brought out her phone, and turned on her camera light, "Yeah, but I'm she'll understand," she said. Walking forward, Claire turned to him, "Are you coming or not?" She chuckled. Daniel looked at her with gratitude, "Thanks Claire," He smiled.

And that is the end for The Walk Outside! I got to say I did not expect to write this much, but I'm definitely proud. Claire and Daniel warmed my heart; this must be one of my most wholesome stories yet. I do need to practice not repeating smile 🥲

Here's my next short story! This one has two parts, this is part one. Idk went part two will be out.

The walk outside (part one)

"Claire? Are you alright?" Heather said looking over to her sister as she layed on the couch. "You really need some sleep," she said staring into her sleepy eyes. "Huh?" Claire said startled, "Oh sis! You scared me!" she said with a surprised smile. Her sister did not look amused, she probably knew what she was thinking "You really need to stop worrying about Ava," Heather sighed sitting down with her sister, "She's with Anabel, we can trust her to keep an eye on our sister."

"I know, it's just after what happened-," Claire started. "Claire, I know your protective of her, but you need to let her make her own choices," Her sister interrupted, "get some sleep." Claire narrowed her eyes but sighed in defeat and got up from the couch and onto her bed. "It's stupid you know, how people can do this on their own account, and have no shame," Claire groaned in her pillow. "Claire what did I just say?" Heather said as she looked at her from the couch, "Stop worrying about Ava, it's starting to get annoying." Her sister just looked at her and turned herself towards the wall.

"I'm going out," Claire got up. Her sister looked surprised, "Claire its literally almost eleven, what are you going to do-" "I am going to get some fresh air, you right, I really need," she said heading to the bathroom to change. Her sister just stayed silent the whole time and went to read a book.

..........

"The forest is lovely tonight," Claire smiled to herself as she walked through the soft green grass. The forest always had a way of calming her down, she felt like she was part of nature, and she was. Just then she came to a stop, and she frowned. She saw the lights of the city up ahead; it was not extremely far from her house. "No wonder I can't see any stars tonight," Claire sighed in disappointment. Ever since humans came to Elora, more cities have been popping up. It was not like it was a terrible thing, there were kind humans, like her father, who respected this planet and its people. Then again, there were also people who just did not care.

When she was little, she saw humans and Ecoan’s fighting over territory. Humans wanted to build over the Ecoan's home to make some shop for people to enjoy. Luckily, the Excoan’s managed to keep their home, and the humans built the store elsewhere. Claire then smiled; she was not thinking about her sister anymore.

Her sister was right, it was relieving to take her mind off her sister, just focusing on something else for a change, even if it is just as negative.

She then started walking again, reaching a meadow of flowers nearby. Claire then looked at one flower in the bunch, a blue one. It was her color; she loved blue. She sat down and admired the beauty, in which its petals shined in the faint moonlight. For some reason it brought her comfort. She then grasped her hair; she was so human-like. Not like this flower at all, but she was.

She then got up and decided to walk home, but then she spotted someone. "How did I not hear them?" Claire thought to herself. It was a boy: a human boy; about her age. He was kneeling near a flower bed, doing what she could presume as sketching it out, as he held a sketch book and pencil in his hand. She knew she should not be staring, but the boy looked kind of cute. His glossy black reflected the moonlight, and his eyes were in full concentration as he sketched.

Claire blushed, why was she being so creepy? She was going to go back, but then she got the urge to talk to him. Turning around, Claire then walked towards the man, not steeping on any flowers, determined to make new friends, and not ask for his number. Then her foot stepped on a twig and startled the boy. He looked around in surprise, wondering what made that sound. He then looked up to see Claire walking towards him.

To be continued....
