Red. You see red. It’s the first thing you see when your eyes peel open slowly—as if they’ve been sealed shut for hundreds of years. Red. Labored breaths escape your quivering lips, your heart beating frantically in your chest. Red. It ripples in your vision, hues deepening in color—almost sinisterly, almost like it’s mocking you. Red. It swallows your sight, strangles your throat, swamps your senses. Red. Like blood.

Suddenly you don’t think you can breathe.

You gasp, sitting up, your fingers ghosting around your neck. Immediately, a sharp abdominal pain pervades your entire body, cutting through your insides. Tears begin to prick your vision. It hurts. Something feels broken, and a newfound throbbing finds its way into your head. You wince, biting your lip to muffle a scream. Then, you freeze.

Red. It encompasses your vision again.

The air is hot and heavy, carrying the weight of death in its feeble arms. There are immobilized soldiers bundled up in white bandages seeping with crimson blood, desperate soldiers who are wailing, pointing up to the billowing red canopy of the tent and cursing or praying—you can’t tell which; and there are many soldiers who have ceased all sort of movement. You catch glimpses of their stone-cold eyes before someone drapes a white blanket over their still-warm corpses. Blood stains the dirt in ugly blots of color. And you watch, frozen, as men and women in scarlet uniforms cry for their families, their friends, their lovers.

Your fingers tangle around a chain around your neck, and it takes a lot longer for you to notice that it is not a restraining cuff but a dainty necklace with a pendant hanging from the middle. A diamond. The white jewel sparkles against your soot-covered skin, twinkling despite the blood and the gore. Something about it brings you infinitesimal comfort but it’s comfort nevertheless.

When you finally look down at your own body, you see a frail figure—bruised and battered—but in a much better state than the others. Your bandages have been freshly changed, and though you’re in pain, you feel fully cognizant enough to think: what the hell happened? How long have you been here? Where the hell are you? Asking questions is at least a step in the right direction. You stare at the red fabric of your uniform, head whirling with thousands and thousands of different theories and ideas. But in the end, the thoughts diverge to one critical conclusion: you are a soldier.

A soldier. You must be fighting for something, then. Whether it may be your honor, your nation or your loved ones, you must be a soldier for something’s sake. But it’s quite laughable. Fighting for a nation you can’t even recall. Even worse, your enemy’s face is a blank slate in your mind. How can you fight against people you don’t know at all? How can you let their blood spill on your hands when you can’t remember how they’ve wronged you and your nation? Or are you getting too ahead of yourself? What if none of your thoughts are true? How can you be sure of anything?—you can’t—not when you can’t even recall a single name other than yours.

But the more you try to desperately sift through your memories, the more you realize that you have none. Your head begins to throb again, and you clutch your necklace for moral support, hanging onto it as if it were your lifeline (and you’ll treat it that way until you figure out what the hell is going on). It doesn’t make sense. How are you a stranger in your own body?

“Your name, dear soldier?”

● recording . . .

"oh god, okay, it's recording. it's recording. this is actually happening." you were half-whispering, half-panicked. after some rustling, the black screen faded to white and your face was blurrily in view until you set your phone down on the kitchen island. you tapped a few times to get the focus right and once it was, you physically paused before setting your forehead down onto the cool marble surface. your breaths were loud and deep, trying to calm down the heart rate that you claimed was thrumming in your ears.

once you lifted your head and flashed a big nervous grin, you reached for something off-screen. when you pulled your hand back, you were holding onto a small sand-coloured box. it was wrapped neatly with ribbon and a cute white bow on the top; simple and discrete. when you shook the box on video, there was some soft rustling inside thanks to tissue paper. you gave a satisfied nod at that as you bit your lip. "i don't think he's going to figure it out until he opens it..."

you graced yourself with another two minutes of full catastrophic anxiety in silence on footage, from pacing back and forth to fanning at your eyes almost hysterically. you even contemplated if this whole thing should be recorded, but you came to the conclusion it would be a sweet memory to look back on later. then, a look of resolution dawned on your face and you gave the camera one last smile.

"babe?" you raised your voice just a little louder than usual to cut through the rest of the house. the telltale scrape of his computer chair upstairs against the hardwood signaled he heard you. "babe, where are you?"

"i'm here, i was just on my computer!" swift feet ran down the stairs as he echoed out and that was when jungkook finally came into the camera's view as he turned the corner. his eyes were searching, concern pooling in them when he spotted you leaning against the fridge with your arms behind your back. he didn't even give your phone a glance as he walked up to you, a palm raised gently to brush against your cheek. "what's wrong, love?"

"i'm okay, i promise," you reassured, seen leaning against his touch. he relaxed almost immediately, shoulders lowering, but then his expression shifted to confusion when you moved to the side and revealed the gift box to him. "hehe, surprise! i got you a little something on the way home from work yesterday."

even from the distance, anyone could tell how nervous you were with the way you shook your hands to rid of the jitters as jungkook took the box gingerly. as expected, he shook it carefully by his ear. his eyebrows furrowed as he held it back down and untied the ribbon. "huh, i don't remember you ever sneaking away from me long enough to -- oh wait, was that why you were in the bathroom for that long yesterday? you wrapped this in there?"

"no, not really," you whispered half-heartedly, because at that point curiosity overpowered jungkook's actual need to hear an answer from you and he lifted the lid of the box. whenever you look back on the video, you would have to remind yourself it wasn't a freeze frame; jungkook genuinely froze so still it was almost eerie. the only indication the video continued on was when your hands go up to cover your mouth, voice wavering emotionally as you spoke the next words. "i was in there yesterday because i... i f-found out..."

"y... you're..." finally he moved, as he raised a hand to lift out the pregnancy test from the box and stared at it closer. with his gaze then caught on yours, the afternoon sunlight reflected the tears in his eyes as he dropped everything in his hands. a broken sob bellowed out of his chest, his face crashing into the reality as he surged forward to pull you closer to him; burying himself into your hair as he clutched tighter. "oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. you're pregnant, we have a baby-- we have a baby! we have a b-baby..."

your shriek was heard right after as he lifted you up into his arms, laughter mixed in between the crying exclamations that you two realized you were expecting. with your legs wrapped around his waist and arms around his neck, it was sweetly and comically caught on video where he spun you around a couple times before stopping to bring his head back to rest his forehead against yours. "i love you, so much. i cannot wait to love our little one... our baby... oh my god."

you whispered against his lips that you love him too, more than anyone else in this world - but now it was time to grow love for another that will have both your hearts. you cooed and awed when jungkook quivered, shoulders shaking as the second wave of emotions hit him then. he set you down gently, feet on the ground, and held onto you like a lifeline. with murmurs of love and promise shared, you knew he was going to be a fantastic father.

he already loves the baby with his entire soul and nothing was going to change that.

("oh god, you recorded the entire thing?" jungkook shyly groaned, covering his face and laughing incredulously as you reached for your phone and pressed the stop button to end the recording. "talk about being a blubbering mess..."

"i can't wait to show our baby this when they're older," you giggled, already replaying the exact moment when jungkook opened the box and saw the pregnancy test. you laughed again, brighter then, as he groaned louder when he heard himself sob on video. "babe, you do realize we have to tell everyone now, right? will you be okay?"

out came groan and cackle number three, respectively.)
