I like all the handyman AUs and ones inspired by it, but I feel like we aren’t exploring the idea of Stanford being the scientist he is and doing research on Bill Cipher. There are endless possibilities, really.

Ford is a cryptozoologist for fuck sake, I think if his previously incorporeal paranormal dreamscape toxic ex walked in with a physical form, whether it be triangle or human; if he was a human to begin with or if he got turned into one after the theraprism or whatever, he’d want to at least do a little medical exam on him as a treat.

Like, how is he not going batshit over how it’s possible for Bill to have a physical form? And you just know his past self wanted to know what his deal was physiologically. He is a whole-ass shape. He’d wonder how the hell he even functions.

Once again he’s a scientist and an enthusiast of the paranormal. You’ve seen his journals, his collections of sample jars of various cryptid parts, the fucking T-Rex skull he put in a fish tank and hooked up to a monitor of some kind, c’mon. Mans is unhinged, don’t tell me he wouldn’t at least want to get a blood sample from that little cheese wedge freak. This is also assuming Bill still has the crack, which he’d want to take a look at too, maybe try to fix it or something. It doesn’t even have to be billford ship, they can hate each other’s ass, still be bitter exes about it or maybe it’s a point in the story where they start coming back around to each other. Not even necessarily in a romantic way, like Ford finds out Bill has medical trauma and either tries to help him through it or makes it waaay worse. The whole thing resurfaces a bunch of shit he’d blocked out and refused to deal with in therapy. (if the theraprism didn’t do that already, assuming it works similar to a real mental hospital.) Could be a great opportunity for angst/fluff and hurt/comfort.

A catalyst for the situation could be an injury or the cracks get worse or just for shits and giggles. Though I think having a reason is more fun for storytelling.

I like the idea of a character that’s normally emotionally distant and nonchalant having a moment of vulnerability and feeling safe enough to show fear and seek comfort from the only person they’d ever deign to show that side of themselves to.

Maybe they both learn how to approach their relationship in a more healthy way. Or perhaps they stay pathetic petty exes but deal with each other regardless. Full of fluff or super angsty, maybe a little bit of both; Whatever serves the narrative best.

Omg, finally, someone who views Ford and this headcanon the same way I do!

i have been thinking about this for a WHILE so figured i should finally make a post about it. obligatory i am not a doctor i’m just yapping, if any of the info/wording here is wrong lmk :)

i don’t have a problem with “ford has npd” headcanons, a lot of the reasons people give are completely valid and i think it has a lot of potential in adding depth to his character, but there’s also a lot of times i see it and it seems like the op just doesn’t understand ford as a character and/or npd. so !! here’s a couple of counterpoints/things to consider :D

a lot of his social issues (especially his struggles with empathy & difficulty connecting to people who are different from him) can easily be attributed to autism. like the dude definitely has an ego problem but that’s not the only thing to him, he’s a Person. not every problem he has with other people is because he just thinks he’s Better Than Them - he does genuinely have issues connecting with others, and his personality can make it seem like he just doesn’t care. there seems to be this issue online/in fandom of needing people to be complete social butterflies, the perfect image of nail-biting, hand-wringing social anxiety, or shut-in misanthropes, but people & their relationships are more complicated than that. ford doesn’t fit into any of those categories - he’s neither super sociable nor anxious, but that doesn’t by default mean his isolation from others is wanted or comes from a place of superiority. he just has trouble bonding with people outside of shared interests, which is really common in autism. the entire dd&md episode is ford going completely overboard with this ttrpg because he’s “gone a while without a friend,” which just ,, doesn’t fit with someone that Doesn’t Care. dd&md doesn’t have anything to do with his work, he’s not testing dipper to make sure he’s worthy of his company or whatever, he’s just having fun with someone who likes the same things as him - that’s the only way he really knows to spend time with people. that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love mabel or stan, and it doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to bond or connect with them, and it doesn’t mean he thinks he’s above them - he just doesn’t know how to express that. every day i wake up and i think about how ford wanted stan to play dd&md with them and i cry

(as a side note bc i think this needs more explanation here - no, i genuinely don’t think ford, deep down, thinks he’s better than stan. stan has a lot of good qualities and i’m sure ford is aware of that *cough cough his ability to bond with the kids cough cough*, they just have a really strained relationship. it’s not just ford being mad at stan, either - stan has his own reasons for being upset with ford. between the 40 years worth of tension and them Being Siblings i think it’s really easy to take ford’s attitude towards him as a superiority thing when imo it’s closer to having 2 five year olds in the backseat of a car going “HE TOUCHED ME !!” “HE TOUCHED ME FIRST !!!” “NUH-UH !!!!” lol)

autism aside, that previous part has a lot of mentions of ford having an “ego problem” or “superiority complex” etc etc, which are usually some pretty big points people bring up with him having npd - but npd is a lot more complicated than that. this is where the “i’m not a doctor” disclaimer becomes really important - this is based on my own very limited understanding of npd, so take it with a grain of salt lol. that being said i’m not gonna talk abt actual npd too much for obvious reasons, but i do have one thing to point out, that being the core/root issue/whatever else u wanna call it of npd. from what i understand, people with npd have very low self-worth, and their behaviors come from a place of wanting others’ attention and approval as a stand-in or replacement of their own self image. this ,, isn’t something i think ford has a problem with. i don’t think his confidence in himself or his abilities is a facade (which is ok!! he’s made mistakes, sure, but the dude has done a lot of genuinely impressive things in his life), and - this might sound a little crazy but hear me out - i don’t think he actually cares that much about what others think of him. yeah, there’s all that stuff in journal 3 about him wanting to be the next Big Scientist or whatever, but i honestly think that was his father’s dream, not his. i’ve talked about this before, but filbrick having a preference for ford doesn’t mean he was suddenly a present and caring father towards him - both of the stans desperately wanted him to love them. a lot of people point to stan’s decisions in his 20s-30s - his scams, his criminal record, etc - as a manifestation of that desperation (“don’t come back until you’ve made us a fortune” or whatever), which is a point i think is completely valid. to add to that, though, the journals were written around the same time period, and i think ford’s aspirations of becoming a world-renowned scientist are his own version of that. filbrick wanted stan to make money, so that’s what stan wanted, too. filbrick wanted ford to be some super successful science guy (so he could make money), so that’s what ford wanted, too. by the time of the series ford doesn’t really seem to care that much - sure, he wants the kids to like him and whatnot, but that’s normal. outside of that he’s this total hermit who seems pretty content to just hang out in the basement and do his own thing lol

a smaller little note to close this on, a disturbing amount of npd hcs seem to come from people who just ,, don’t like ford. which is fine, you don’t have to like him or anything, but maybe don’t drag an irl condition into it? like i said npd is a lot more complicated than just being mean and thinking ur better than everyone else. its fine if u see those traits in ford, i can’t get inside ur head and rewire ur brain to like him lol, but maybe consider just phrasing it as “he’s mean” instead of “he’s a narcissist”? idk, it just kinda rubs me the wrong way when people like. diagnose him with npd and then use that as their “therefore he is Bad and i Don’t Like Him” point lol

Bro, what the fuck?

No wonder Bill fell hard and assumed that Ford would be into causing the apocalypse together with him. If my man Ford was dropping casual lines like these in Bill's presence, no wonder he would assume that this was a man made of co-galactic-chaos-god-king material.

I love how TBOB turned Ford's "I was an innocent and naive scientist tricked by a cruel master manipulator" into "Oh, he was definitely tempted to go down hand in unlovable hand!" Like yes, clearly he still has moral framework that Bill doesn't, but I'm sure that there are dark hours of the night where Ford almost wishes he didn't.

I find it really interesting how Bill reiterates that he saw Ford as "a human pet" and a tool for him to use in his plans, but in the end the closest he has ever come to telling the truth to SOMEONE about what happened in Euclydia is to him of all people.

In the Book of Bill in the part about his past where all the redacted stuff is (where it is pretty much confirmed that he in fact, killed or is responsible for everyone dying) Bill himself tells the reader:

"The important thing is, I freed myself from my suffocating world, and freed everyone else too, and everyone loved me for it, and everyone was fine! And that's all there is to say about that! "

And well, it clearly is a lie to us, the readers, who just saw the previous paragraph full of people apparently screaming, seeing lots of blood, and being "the last one breathing". Bill also adds how every time he tries to talk about that day he starts hearing a loud buzzing as well as black outs for half a minute which is a super normal response when you are just freeing people and stuff(/j) . Things is tho, this version where everyone " was freed" Seems to be the official version, the one that Bill tells everyone. This is seen in the new webpage where by putting "tantrum" you see a scene where Time Baby straight up calls Bill out on killing everyone and Bill's henchmen are surprised by it as they were told by him that "he liberated the people of his dimension".

Even when he first met Ford, he says "I went no contact with my home dimension and I don't regret it", which implies that he was ready to feed him that version initially. But THEN later on you get the Scene™. It's not until after some time has passed between them when Bill tells him about how his entire home dimension was destroyed... By a monster, all while looking uncharacteristically distant. And sure one could argue that it was a play on Ford's emotions, to try to win him over and manipulate him further but it's too touchy of a subject for even his henchmen to know. The same interview on the webpage where he talks about manipulating Ford, preying on his insecurities and him being a human pet, ends with the interviewer asking "Let's talk about your parents" And Bill automatically shutting it down altogether. When he gets drunk after him and Ford part ways he calls for "a Sixer" And in the same scene starts calling out to his mom.

In the end the closest he has ever come to owning up to it to anyone that isn't himself (and even then, seems like he's forced to by the voices that keep weighting on his conscience as seen in the webpage) is to Ford. And he won absolutely nothing from it.

As another fun detail, in the webpage if you type "Lies" You get a whole page of Bill talking about lying and it ends with a graphic that says "Lie until you aren't lying anymore".

And what's the input used to get the interview where Bill talks about Ford and calls him a human pet and a tool?

"Evenhisliesarelies".

Welp, I fell down a hyperfixation rabbit hole after reading the Book of Bill. I can’t draw men well, so you know the drill. I feel like my human Cipher design is a little basic, but I still think it works. I plan to draw more, because why not?

Ok, I have a tip for character design. I don’t know if this is already a thing, but I’ll post it anyway. I am bad at drawing dudes, but sometimes I have to make a male design for a character. If this happens (usually only if I’m making a gijinka) I will create a female design first, so I can focus on the design and not how bad my drawing looks. I have also applied this to non-human creatures that I have not gotten a handle on how to draw yet. I just draw a human design first then translate it into the proportions/style of the creature.
