there's this website, the website for russian-language fanfiction. has all the slash fic you'd expect. it's called ficbook, it's not based out of russia, but it gets (i assume) most of its traffic from there.

the story so far:

russia bans public expressions of queerness in all forms

russia makes being queer legally equal to political extremism

amid other things, russia tries threatening ficbook, the gay fanfiction website, into removing the gay fanfiction. the ultimatum is you purge the gay or you get banned from your main audience

ficbook doesn't budge. there are plans to split off a child website to contain the slashfic and take the ban for the parent, but they don't go through

russia finally bans ficbook; it's no longer accessible without a vpn

predicting, i assume, that they can't brave the prospective losses, ficbook negotiates with russian censorship and comes to a compromise:

the website stays up but

you can't read the yaois

they just banned yaoi in russia

they've just issued a statement that they'll make the 'slash' and 'femslash' categories unavailable to russian users in exchange for getting unbanned. some other adjacent features will also be region-locked. they quite literally and specifically banned yaoi and yuri from russian audiences

i haven't used ficbook in years and years but i'll come back just to see the "unavailable in your country" banner roll across the suspiciously gen-centric trending page like a tumbleweed
