I once legitimately thought a white student was interested in my culture when he asked me what my Korean name was, then he proceeded to loudly ridicule me saying that my name, Ah-Reum, sounded like “Scooby Doo on drugs” and got the entire bus to start laughing at me. I was so upset, I started going by my Americanized name, Jaymie, for the rest of my youth.
Now that I’m an adult, I’ve proudly reclaimed my Korean birth name and don’t give a shit what whites think it sounds like- But this is really important for non-PoC to be more aware of. You can’t just decide to adopt a non-white name because it’s the new popular thing du jour/you ‘just really like K-pop’ or some shit.
