You know, I’m not a Marvel fangirl. I don’t participate in the fandom. I liked “The Avengers.” I liked “Captain America.” I liked the Iron Man trilogy because of the developmental arc that Tony Stark was in. 

I’ve never read the comics. I’ve done passing research on the Marvel universe, mainly because it’s almost mandatory in this day and age to know something about what’s become an enormous franchise and is being pushed into mainstream culture. 

So I missed the whole “give Captain America a boyfriend.” I don’t personally think it’s necessary? Maybe because I saw the relationship between he and Bucky as the type I have with @glassrat—best friends who truly love each other, look out for each other’s best interests but don’t have any need for romantic attachment with each other. I’m bi, she’s straight and we make it work because we’re friends and have been for over a decade. 

So okay, representation is important. I grant that, and as I didn’t see quite a few of the most recent movies, it’s possible I missed developing chemistry that would’ve made Steve Rogers being bisexual a natural choice. (I dislike it when a character’s sexuality is forced to fill some sort of quota. If it’s part of natural character development or who that character is intrinsically, then it’s chill.) Okay, so fine–no boyfriend for Capt. All right. 

This notion of “Captain America as a HYDRA sleeper agent” however… What is this. What the fuck is this.  Jack Kirby was in the US Army during World War II. Joe Simon served in the US Coast Guard during World War II. They created a character with a very specific set of values, a very specific purpose and a very specific idiom. 

…and now he’s gonna be a Nazi sympathizer at best?

There’s a plot twist and then there’s the point where I am literally wondering what the actual fuck. What the actual fuck. There’s nothing to be gained from this. There is no character development, no obstacle to overcome, no improvement to story arc and it is not going to provide development for everyone else associated with Steve Rogers.

The Avengers are already having problems; you’re going to compound what they’re going through by forcing them to have even worse trust issues because the one man who can be counted on to be honest, determined, honorable and fair is now a Nazi. 

As a writer, I’m perplexed. As a person, I’m insulted. I like Captain America as the genuine white knight that has become extremely rare in the media. I like him as a warm, big-hearted man who just wanted to do what he felt was right. I like seeing someone who is legitimately good. 

Yes, there’s a need for really good villains, but you don’t have to sacrifice one of the truly well written heroes to get that. All it does is leave you with a field of villains and no one to stand against them. 

I think we’re already having that struggle in the world. Leave our fictional paladins alone. @marvelentertainment –what were you thinking?
