reflecting on the unofficial result of the presidential elections…
misogyny, internalized self-hatred (as a filipino) and misinformation (and the lack of clarity) are three major factors that affect the divide between the citizens of this country (and possibly in other countries too).
misogyny: because when a woman who has credentials and the right skills to accomplish a task, it is mostly seen as a threat. if not, it is seen as an act of vanity and self-righteousness. it doesn't help that most filipinos are on hellsites like facebook and tiktok ー where a lot of extreme opinions circulate. i genuinely think that filipinos who use these sites are more vulnerable to cyber threats now that the data collecting technologies are improving.
internalized self-hatred: because of the marcos regime, which was a byproduct of the three foreign occupations, history was erased and rewritten numerous times. filipinos eventually lost sight of who they are, their heritage and their values. this led on to make us succumb to colonialism, which appeases the ego of foreign nations (especially the western societies). we seek relief from foreign countries because of this and eventually, a toxic trait of crab mentality became prevalent in our society.
misinformation: to reiterate what i wrote in the former, fake news is a relatively new social issue that we all face but you can see it more in the philippines. mockery, discrimination and humiliation can be seen within our government and among our fellow citizens. we are only a few generations close to losing our heritage because of the repeated abuse historically and politically, and yet through capitalistic schemes and again, vanity ー we are indifferent. most filipinos are either illiterate or ignorant. it's simple psychology: majority rules out. the minority will have to carry the consequences of the result whether they like it or not.
i'm not one to take sides. i admit i don't know much about all the candidates. but i side with the ones who value humanitarian causes, and leni was one of them.
regardless of the expertise (and the lack of it) of the different candidates, we cannot guarantee that the Philippines will instantly flourish in the next 6 years. we cannot guarantee what will happen in the future since a lot of countries are either in conflict or have struggling economies right now. whatever these candidates promised won't exactly be accomplished like how they planned because of these major factors:
the $232B debt that the country has accumulated
poor usage of land and pollution
the existence of the internet allowing almost every single thing that you do be tracked and seen by everyone else (aka investors and advertisers)
illiteracy, ignorance and indifference among filipinos (how many times will i have to say this)
OFWs and their varying situations abroad
the threat of China in the conflict with the South China/West Philippine sea
and many other things like shitty laws around women and laborers
no matter how you look at it, the Philippines is an ill-equipped country in many areas. economy, military ー even down to our education systems, we are victims of industrialization and solving these issues will NOT be possible without seeking help from the UN or developed countries.
this makes it even more challenging, since we're quite literally crushed and we are barely holding on ever since the pandemic ー no actually, ever since THE WAR. we are also suffering from overpopulation and that makes us vulnerable to the effects of climate change and world hunger.
not to mention the annual storms, we can't just leave it absolutely destroying us every single year.
i probably forgot so many other things but it's just not an easy task to run a whole country unless you want to destroy it and its people. you have to think hard what to prioritize and make difficult decisions.
man, the world is high on ads
this is a messy post but to be honest we are all in need of some love and care right now. people are just so petty and weird these days. i don't understand the collective narcissism but maybe that's on the Leo side of the Aquarius age (shush that astrology right now). im not saying that im not weird or im above everyone since i can literally have questionable beliefs too and i make mistakes too
but i think we need to be able to speak our opinions without going to extremes and be able to change them because opinions are not facts. they will never be proven correct. it's uniquely catered to how a person views something. you can either disagree with it or not.
however there is a difference between a pure opinion and an educated opinion. i think this is what our country lacks.
i just realized that prejudice becomes potent the more freedom a society has. at least that's how i see my country. feel free to correct me on this.
pride and prejudice… yeah, that's the two things that define the philippines' toxic side. people would rather choose their pride, their ego rather than choose to be educated.
i think people need to understand the concept that being wrong does not equate to being humiliated/being lowclass.
you cannot convince yourself that you're growing as a person while not admitting your mistakes and changing your bad habits. it's a fundamental advice for everyone and it's easier said than done.
alright im getting tired
this is it for now.
i'm scared for my country's future.
but i have faith.
