fuck it since my birthday is in like one day i'm gonna use my birthday wish to tell y'all to look at the shit going on in southern Appalachia right now after Hurricane Helene. look at it and talk about it and spread resources about it like wildfire because nobody else fucking is and it feels like we're on our own out here.

there are people who are stranded in hazardous areas that are still safer than trying to leave by driving on the increasingly hazardous roads. i'm personally going into my third day without electricity at this point, and haven't been able to get any gas for a generator to even keep our fridge working. there are very few places with power or running water, and cell service has just barely been restored in the last hour. ground crews are working hard to repair things, but there are many, many areas that are entirely inaccessible that may not receive these fixes for several more days if not weeks. i'm afraid my own neighborhood might become one of those areas if repairs don't get to us soon, and since we're much more rural i have a difficult time trying to be optimistic about it.

we're very far inland. i guarantee you damn near everybody here was expecting a little more rain and wind like we usually get during hurricane season, if they even heard about the hurricane beforehand in the first place since most people only got about a twelve hour notice before landfall- after several major areas had already been flooded. our terrain protects us from most major weather events- most locals have never encountered a single tornado or legitimate tornado warning in our entire lives. nobody i've talked to or heard from about it seems to have had any idea that it would be this bad. everybody's wishing that they took it more seriously, but we've never, ever had to before. i've seen people comparing it to Hurricane Katrina and honestly i'm not sure if that's all too inaccurate. today while looking for a single working gas station i drove by a military helicopter parked in front of the elementary school i went to when i was little.

please for the love of god, talk about us. talk about the good memories you had here or the beauty of our mountains, and talk about how devastated we are as we watch historic structures, buildings, and entire towns get wiped from the face of the earth like they were never even there. stop dismissing us as uneducated hicks and rednecks and hilllbillies and fucking help us.

You don't need to be actively trying to heal all the time. And honestly, that sounds like a recipe for burn out.

It's okay to not always be focused on your healing. It's okay to take breaks.

You know what, since I'm thinking about it anyways, let's talk formalwear accessories. Most of these are traditionally menswear but a bit of gender fuckery is good for the soul, and frankly most of these are about making your mass-produced clothing fit and lay properly without having to go to the tailor.

Shirt stays: these go around your thighs to hold your shirt down, so that it stays smooth and tucked in. They're usually elastic, with 1-3 clips, and if you wear skirts frequently this is a GREAT way to make sure your top doesn't ride up. The clips will be visible if you're wearing something tight, so loose pants or skirts are where these do best. There's also an insane version that clips to your socks, but that is for lunatics. If you wanted, you could also use one of these clips to hold up thigh-highs.

These do a great job of smoothing and narrowing the waist area by keeping your shirt from bunching there.

Sleeve garters: usually metal, leather, elastic, or silk. These are usually worn with button-down shirts to adjust where your cuff falls on the wrist or hand. They're properly worn on the upper arm, and you pull the fabric of the sleeve above the garter until you cuff is where you want it. Because this creates a puff of sleeve at the bicep, it also broadens the appearance of the shoulders. It's great if you're working with your hands or if your sleeves are often too long for your preference.

Waistband clip or belt adjustment clip/buttons

Three different ways of tightening the waistband of a pair of pants or a skirt. You're not going to get more than an inch or so tighter without weird bunching, and for most of these you'd want them to be hidden under a shirt or jacket, but they do the job if that's something you're having issues with.

Collar pins: There are so many fun ones out there, both with and without chains. They're not terribly practical, though the slight weight may help keep your collar where you want it. Also consider collar tips, which pin (surprise) to the very tips of your collar points.

Sweater clips/guards: meant to hold your sweater or cardigan mostly closed. Great if your cardigan doesn't button, or if you don't like it to be buttoned all the way.

There's tons of other stuff out there like this--etsy is a great place to find this stuff. A lot of these are old solutions to the very modern problem of mass-maufactured clothes not being as one-size-fits-all as advertised, but they're also a fun way to put a bit of personality into businesswear.

The SS Warrimoo, A Passenger Steamship Traveling From Vancouver To Australia, Was Silently Knifing Its

The SS Warrimoo, a passenger steamship traveling from Vancouver to Australia, was silently knifing its way across the mid-Pacific waters. The navigator had just finished calculating a star fix and handed the results to Captain John DS. Phillips.

The Warrimoo's coordinates were LAT 0ΒΊ 31' N, LONG 179 30' W. The date was December 31, 1899. "Know what this means?" First Mate Payton announced, "We're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line."

Captain Phillips was prankish enough to seize the opportunity to do the nautical feat of a lifetime. He summoned his navigators to the bridge to double-check the ship's position. He altered his course slightly to focus directly on his target. He then altered the engine's speed.

The calm weather and clear night worked to his advantage. At midnight, the SS Warrimoo rested on the Equator, exactly where it had crossed the International Date Line. The ramifications of this odd arrangement were numerous.

The ship's bow was in the Southern Hemisphere, in the middle of summer. The stern was in the Northern Hemisphere, in the midst of winter. The date on the aft portion of the ship was December 31, 1899. The date on the forward half of the ship was January 1, 1900. The ship experienced multiple days, months, years, seasons, and centuries simultaneously.

Culture is so obsessed with the idea of lone geniuses that it doesn't really appreciate that most of the progress of science (and likely every other discipline) occurs collaboratively, in babysteps, and usually through a lot very tedious, utterly unsexy, work.

VETTED CAMPAIGNS LOW ON FUNDS

Hello! My friend Mohamed @moayesh has sent me some campaigns that he has personally vetted, and which are very low on funds and need our support. Mohamed helps run the blog @gaza-evacuation-funds, and personally verifies many campaigns on the ground in Gaza. He's doing important work, and I encourage you to follow this blog in order to keep supporting Palestinians in need of our help. Here is a link to a post in which you can see Mohamed personally vetting a campaign on the ground.

I was able to donate €5/$5 USD/$5 AUD to a few campaigns that are in desperate need of our help, and I am hoping that in making this post I will be able to encourage at least one other person to match just one of my donations. If you can match one of my donations, it would be incredibly helpful if you could reblog this post and encourage others to do the same. I am hopeful that we will be able to get some momentum going for some people who really need our assistance.

Here are the campaigns. I encourage you to read the gofundme pages I have linked, as I cannot accurately convey all the loss that these individuals have experienced in a single post without it becoming incredibly long.

Aboud and his family. €115/€20,000 (payment through PayPal available)

Ahmed and his family €2,082/€30,000 (payment through PayPal available)

Shahed and her family $137 AUD/$70,000 AUD

Nada and her family $125 USD/$40,000 USD (payment through PayPal and Venmo available)

Qusai and his family €225/€50,000 (payment through PayPal available)

Mostafa and his family €90/€20,000 (payment through PayPal available)

Please, please reblog this! I humbly ask you to consider matching even one of these donations. Not only will you be providing material help to families in dire need, but you will be giving them hope for the future. Thank you all for taking the time to read this. Let's work together to make a positive difference!

One of the weirdest thing about growing up suicidal is that you assume you have no future, you don’t even try to envision it because you see no point. So eventually, you start assuming everyone else sees nothing in your future either. Recently, my friend and I were talking and she said something about how at her wedding I could wear a suit or a dress as long as it matched her bridesmaid’s dresses because the butler of honor has to make a good impression. This hit me so hard because I had never realized before how other people thought about me. She said it so casually like it wasn’t even a hard decision, just a given fact. She loves me so much she saw me at her wedding, standing with her on one of the most important days of her life. And you know what? There are so many people who think about you that way. If that isn’t proof that you should keep going I don’t know what is.

This. This Was Houses Love Confession.

This. This was houses love confession.

Throughout the whole show there have been themes of characters reflecting their problems onto patients and talking about the patient when they're actually talking about themselves.

House - the one uncomfortable with human emotions like love - making a conversation that was heading to talking about Wilsons feelings, into a joke that is even more steered towards love and whatnot.

Maybe, house just randomly decided to make a gay joke in a very tender moment before starting a treatment that might kill his best friend, you know, a moment where you might... confess something.

Or he finally said i love you without actually having to. In this essay i will-

Crying can get rid of excess stress hormones and release oxytocin. There is a reason crying helps :)

gentle reminder that crying is actually one of the best things you can do to relieve all that tension and emotion in your brain, and not to resist the impulse because it's 'weak' or 'unnecessary' or 'a plea for attention.' if you need to cry, do it, even if you don't always know the reason. your body does.

i don't want to go on dating apps. i want to meet people the organic way: playing the same song on repeat at a party, causing someone to smash an antique mirror and then leaving the party to go bail them out of jail
