I'm thinking about the Dalish conversation with Zevran and how he tells of the circumstance of his birth in the most matter of fact way and calls it the oldest tale in the book. If the Warden says it was horrible, Zevran plays it off with a nonchalant "Is it?" and says it's normal, especially for the boys he grew up with. But! He approves of you acknowledging that his past has been horrible to him. He keeps diminishing his own problems and trauma, and it's interesting because there are so many little aspects of him that show themselves in that tiny bit of dialogue.

Zevran, as a crow, is trained in the art of seduction and it has been one of the reasons he's still alive to this day. He knows it's typically unsexy to lament on how terribly your past has been affecting you. If you tell Zevran you're sorry for him, he immediately turns the conversation into complimenting the Warden.

It can be read as a test of character if one so chooses. Obviously Zevran isn't going to show a weak point to a person he just met, but, he is telling about himself, on a deeper level, and it's up to the Warden on how they react. Also, It's a good way to scope intentions and such. Zevran is still sharing information on himself, but on his terms. He chooses to tell the Warden about his childhood when all they asked was a question about the Dalish. And he sets a neutral tone to it.

Zevran's childhood is not a pleasant subject and he distances himself from it. It's far easier for him to talk about it that way, and it doesn't force him to process what he experienced and how it was horrible.

But he does enjoy someone, an outsider, reaffirming that what he went through was horrible, and it wasn't okay just because others have gone through the same and worse. Was there a moment in his past, where he even mildly suggested his childhood might have been less than ideal, and gotten back the reaction that it's no different from his peers? Or that he is lucky to have been bought by the crows?

"My first victim, as it were." Is that what the crows said to him? How they reassured Zevran time and time again how he was meant to be an assassin, it has been so since his birth.

Being not American is fun sometimes. Because somebody will bring up Robert Reich, former US secretary of labour, longstanding and influential leftist politician. And I go "oh yeah, isn't he Sam Reich's dad?"

And I think that is really beautiful.

Introducing Community Copies!

This year, we're excited to offer community copies of Dragon Age Annual 2025: Legacies! Read on to learn more, and find out how you could claim a free digital copy of the calendar & zine.

What are community copies?

Part of the reason we're all here is because the Dragon Age community has been a supportive and fun place to celebrate our love for this fandom. Community copies are free digital versions of the calendar & zine, paid for by donations from other fans.

How do I donate a community copy?

When you make your purchase in our itch.io shop, you'll have the option to donate an amount beyond the cost of the package you're buying for yourself. You can donate as little as $1 USD toward the community copy pool - every $15 USD donated equals one community copy. We also have a community copy social stretch goal - once 10 community copies have been donated ($150 USD), all purchases will include free printable digital character sheets for your Dragon Age OCs!

How do I claim a community copy?

To give various timezones a fair chance, the first five community copies will be distributed based on the terms & conditions below. Then, starting in January, available community copies will be listed in batches periodically and can be claimed on a first come, first served basis. Note: Community Copies are intended to make DAA accessible to fans who might not otherwise get to see these amazing works. If you can afford to purchase a package, we ask that you leave the community copies for those who are not in a position to do so!

Enter to claim one our first 5 community copies:

Reblog this post!

In your reblog or in the replies, tag someone who has made being part of the Dragon Age community supportive and fun.

Bonus entry: link to a fanwork (fic, art, etc) that you think they'd enjoy.

After our community copy donation pool reaches $75 USD donated, we'll randomly select 5 people who have completed the steps above and contact you about claiming your copy.

What do I need to claim a community copy?

An itch.io account! Please be aware that itch.io only allows one purchase per account, so claiming a community copy will prevent you from purchasing any of our other packages from that same account.

I have a headcanon solaveallan child! She's called Shirala. Although, to be fair it does kind of make things awful.

My Lavellan, Ghilara, realises she is pregnant after the breakup, right before the final battle against Corypheus. They had been taking precautions, but its not modern birth control so its not 100%. Because its just before the battle, she decides to tell him afterwards, so as not to distract him from the fight. She does go try to tell him at first, but she chickens out (mirroring the vallaslin scene).

Solas leaves not knowing she is pregnant, but does find out afterwards and feels even more guilt. Ghilara considers aborting the pregnancy, but decides to go through with it because she always wanted kids.

However, her actual labour is really long and hard, and afterwards she develops post partum depression/psychosis. Especially since her clan is dead. But she decides to let the child ward with Merrill. Partly because of her own percieved inadequacies, but also because she doesn't want Shirala to be targeted by her enemies. There is also an element of not feeling Dalish enough.

Its a real point of shared guilt for both her and Solas. But Solas keeps an eye of his daughter, and makes sure that Kirkwall stays safe. Eventually, Ghilara trusts herself to start involving herself back into Shirala's life. Though with her continued work in the inquisition she still feels it safer to stay away from her daughter.

So uhh this probably doesn't answer your question because um it is a very big point of angst/tragedy/trauma in their story. But I do think both parents are doing their best in a bad situation, and Shirala definitely has a happy childhood. And, if nothing else, having a daughter absoluetly give Ghilara more of a drive to save this world. Because this is the only world that has her daughter in it, and even if she failed her before, she'll do her damned hardest to protect her from what she can.

But feel free to DM me if ya want more info, or even if you want to bounce ideas off me :D

i've never given any of my ocs children but i'm toying with a solavellan baby... but in canon it would make things so awful 😭 solas leaving at the end of da:i while knowing myla is pregnant (bc let's face it, he'd Know, or at the very least find out very quickly), leaving her to deal with pregnancy and motherhood alone... she wakes up one day and there's a little halla toy on her bedside table and she'd be so mad and feel so betrayed, he's having an agent sneak in to leave her a toy instead of showing his face...

if there's anyone with a headcanon solavellan child, please let me know how you deal with this!!

DISCLAIMER: I have a Lavellan with white hair and this is just bc I'm curious about why people chose to go this route for one of their Lavellans (if any) since this gets talked about so much.
