An open letter to any aspec person who needs to hear this

My most important thing to say to you is that we are not alone. In my experience being aspec can be a very isolating, lonely thing. Especially growing up, I often didn’t understand and wasn’t understood. I don’t know you or your life, but I can imagine you went through some hardships too. And despite all of that, we’re still here. Resilient.

It took a long time, but I’m finally out as an aroace person to all my (very allo, but very supportive) friends. I’m out to my parents and siblings. I’m out to my close colleagues. Everyone I’ve told has been accepting and - if not immediately understanding - willing to learn and ready to respect me. I’ve been confidently wearing my black ring for two years now. When I went to Pride for the first time, I saw ace and aro flags waving in the parade. That alone gave me such a euphoric rush.

In my life, I never met any out ace or aro person, and as a teenager I had to turn to the internet for knowledge, resources and understanding.

Please don’t ever forget: there are so many of us. That thought is always comforting to me, so I hope it is to you too. The world is getting better. We will be okay. We will thrive.

I don’t know your age or your life circumstances, but if you do ever feel stuck in a situation, or helpless, or alone, please know there is someone out there rooting for you.
