Merciless, part 3
Part 1, Part 2, AO3 link (incomplete)

Fireworks fizzed and soared inside Mercerâs chest as he put the phone down. He had not expected that, especially so soon after Ardmoreâs reassurances that Quaritch would need to be pacified. He tried to calm his thumping heartbeat, but it was no mean feat. The boyâŚ. The boy, all to himself! Finally, a chance to prove himself after the catastrophic embarrassment that was TAPâs ending.Â
No more mindless overseeing of drilling operations. Heâd be heading back to the base in the Western Frontier in two days, taking the kid with him. Thoughts about preparing the base and the medical team swirled around him as he anxiously bounced his pen against the file he was reading. It would be more difficult this time, having only one subject and without his second in command. He pushed away the thoughts of Alma Cortez before he could start to dwell on them.Â
âDo you think he wants to know you like, at all?â Fike asked, ever sensitive.Â
âHell if I know Fike.â
âAs if he was with Sullyâs kids,â interjected Zdinarsk, who was leaning casually against a wooden pillar. The squad was supposed to be enjoying their downtime, but instead felt it necessary to congregate around the Colonel and air all their questions that unfortunately Quaritch couldnât answer. âWhat are the goddamn chances of that?â
âDâyou think Sully like⌠adopted him?â
âShut up Fike!â Brown grunted.Â
âThey definitely got their claws in deep,â Z-dog mused, shaking her head.Â
âYeah, well,â Quaritch felt his voice darken. âWeâll see if there ainât anything we can do about that.â
âWhat are you gonna do with him?â asked Ja.Â
âItâs not up to me. We can probably help each other out, but Ardmoreâs calling the shots.â
âDo you think heâll open up to you?â questioned Lyle, who was resting his elbows on his knees, a look of great concentration on his face.Â
Quaritch let out a long sigh. âMaybe. Given time.â
They both knew that time wasnât something they had endless amounts of.Â
âI better go check on him,â Quaritch said suddenly. Ardmore had had him in that machine again today. The kid obviously hadnât revealed anything new because there was no way the squad would be sitting around on their asses if he had. Something deep down was starting to worry Quaritch though. If yesterdayâs efforts were anything to go by, the boy - Spider - wasnât giving up soon. Quaritch had to hand it to Spider, he admired the shit out of him for that. But he knew they were entering dangerous territory with Ardmore. There was only so much crap sheâd take before cutting her losses with the kid, and now that Mercer was snooping around, an uncomfortable feeling was starting to settle in his bones.Â
âDo you want me to come with you?â Lyle offered.
Quaritch waved him off, heaving himself to his feet and making the journey across the cityâs vast compound.Â
Fifteen minutes later, his heavy boots were thudding down the familiar row of cells, approaching the one his boy was in. His heart was starting to thunder in his chest; he didnât know why the kid had such an effect on him, and he didnât like it one bit. As he got to the right cell, the first thing that struck him was that Spiderâs name was missing from the electronic display. Quaritch frowned, stepping forward to see inside.Â
What he saw made his heart stop for a second.Â
It was empty.Â
The cell was empty; vacant and unoccupied.Â
Something was wrong, he knew it. If Spider was still being interrogated then his name would still be on the door. In fact, there was nothing left of Spiderâs presence here at all. The fucking cleaners had been in and all.Â
Where was Spider?
Without wasting a second, he barged into the adjacent observation room, only to find it empty as well. His heart in his mouth, he sprinted back down the long corridor and made it to the command centre in record time.Â
âColonel-â one of the clerks stuttered upon seeing him.Â
He was quickly silenced by Quaritchâs glare of fury and no one else dared say a thing as he found the door to Ardmoreâs office and flung it open without so much as a knock.Â
âWhere is he?â he demanded, upon seeing the General sat calmly at her desk, glasses on and reading a file.Â
âColonel,â she said, looking completely unsurprised to see him.Â
âDonât play with me Ardmore. Whereâs Spider?âÂ
Lesser men that Ardmore would have cowered under the glare Quaritch cast at her.Â
âHe was becoming⌠a distraction. Heâs been removed from Bridgehead while you focus on your mission.â
Quaritch was ready to pick her up by the front of her uniform and slam her so hard down on the desk that sheâd be forced to answer. His fingers twitched. His lip curled up into the beginning of an animalistic snarl.Â
âOnce your mission is completed, the boy will be returned to base. Your mission last week cost us dearly. Four recombinants dead in less than twenty minutes. Billions of dollars down the drain.â She rose to her feet, and although she didnât nearly compare to Quaritch in height, he could feel her power. She stepped around the desk, silently letting him know that she wasnât afraid of him. âYou want that boy? Bring me Jake Sully.â
Quaritchâs mind was racing at a hundred miles an hour. He could attack her right now. He could kill her, even. Force her to give the kid back. But what would that do? Get him court-martialed and risk the RDA taking it out on Spider. He dominated her physically - he was so ready to use his strength - but logistically, she had him by the balls. If he attacked her now, heâd probably never see Spider again.Â
She was asking him to catch Jake Sully. He could do that. He was capable. This is what he wanted. His chest heaved with the effort of not reacting.Â
The seconds ticked by, and eventually he levelled his voice enough to reply. âWhere. Is. The boy?â
Ardmore raised her chin, eyes narrowing slightly. Still, she showed no signs of fear.Â
âHeâs being taken to a separate base. One of our facilities close to the Western Frontier.â
The next word felt like poison on his lips. âMercer?â
She nodded, sending Quaritchâs heart plummeting a hundred miles into the floor.Â
He had to reason with her. âThe kid knows where Sully is. How can I find him without the boy?â
âThe boy wonât talk. You and I have both seen it. Youâll have to think of other means. I have two samsons with pilots at your disposal, ready and waiting. I suggest you get out to Sully's last known location, and track him back from there. Iâm sure youâll come up with something.â
Fury and fear were coursing through Quaritchâs veins in equal measure. He was frozen, trying to work out what to do. What was the best thing for Spider? What was the best thing for himself and his squad?Â
Ardmore smiled up at him, before sighing and moving back around the desk to take her seat. âIâm sorry itâs come to this, Colonel. But rest assured that as soon as Jake Sully is off the playing field we can talk about the boy.â
âYou know what Mercer will do to him?â
She registered the tone of his voice, and levelled him with a flat look. âThat is no longer your concern.â
*********
Spider hissed as he was shoved into a new, whiter cell. âHow long you gonna leave me in this one for then?â he jeered as the two soldiers whoâd marched him in retreated. He was putting on a show, but inside he was scared. He thought heâd had the worst of the RDAâs treatment when they strapped him into that demon machine for the third time. Now, heâd been flown leagues across Pandora with no explanation of where they were going or why. They had touched down in the forest, which explained why Spider was now nursing a sprained wrist from attempting to run, but heâd been wrestled inside a much stranger, more clinical appearing base than anywhere heâd seen at Bridgehead. He supposed he should be thankful they hadnât taken him out here to shoot him. Everyone they passed inside wore labcoats and carried holotablets around their necks, pressing themselves back against the walls in alarm when Spider and his entourage passed. In some of the rooms there looked like machines Spider had just been strapped to. In others, tanks and botanicals. He recognised the deadly Txumtsäâwll plant growing in a sealed terrarium and wondered what the hell the RDA was doing with a plant so toxic it could take out any Naâvi with just a single drop of poison.Â
âDonât touch me, asshole!â he hissed at the soldier who pushed him on.Â
The whole place felt different to Bridgehead in a very non-reassuring way. He leaned his head back against the confines of his latest prison, closing his eyes and trying to lock out the harshness of the overhead lights.
Even the brightest optimist could tell this little outing wasnât for a release party. And where was Quaritch in all this? Spider hadnât seen him since heâd thrown Mercer out of the holding cells. For whatever reason, his fatherâs clone had been furious and refused to explain why. Spider thought back over his conversation with the strange Mercer figure. He hadnât thought anything of it at the time - plenty of sky people had oggled him since he arrived - but now he wondered if that conversation didnât have anything to do with his current predicament.Â
If youâre not going to talk, then youâre useless to him and them. They wonât keep you around for long.
The crisp-shirted RDA schmuck had also been keen to impress upon Spider that unless he gave them what they wanted, Quaritch would have no choice but to âterminateâ him. Was he here under Quaritchâs orders?
After a short while of waiting anxiously, the sound of footsteps outside the glass door alerted Spider to anotherâs presence. He jumped to his feet immediately. There, just as he had suspected, was the well dressed, oily haired RDA leader whoâd visited him yesterday.Â
âHello Miles.â
âWhy are we here? Where is this?â He took a step closer to the glass, his body pumping with adrenaline.Â
John Mercer smiled in that ugly way of his. In all of Spider's life, he had never seen a smile as chilling as Mercerâs.Â
âWe are in a facility to the West of Bridgehead. Fifty clicks away from the city.â
Spider blanched - he couldnât help himself. Fifty clicks? That was over a week away on foot.Â
âIâm waiting for the why,â Spider stressed.Â
âWelcome to Kinglor Base, Miles. This is a specialist facility built purely for scientific research. You may have seen some of our tech on the way in.â
âResearch on what?â Spider hissed. A sinking feeling was making its way through his stomach, clenching his intestines in a tight, cold fist.Â
Mercer looked at him like he couldnât wait to answer. Like he was feeding off Spiderâs fear. âOn you.â

More Posts from Cyren-myadd
this was originally a response to another post but it seems OP blocked me for it so idk if people can still see/interact with said response but heck it i spent a fair while collecting the panels/typing it up so i'm just transferring it over to a new post for anyone else who might be interested in readin'

"Neteyam has to act like a full grown adult [and we should feel bad for him because of this]"
No. Neteyam acts mature because that's his personality, not because it's been forced on him. He chooses to. The idea that he is forced against his will to "act grown-up" and is miserable about it is fanon, not canon.
James Cameron on Neteyam (from the WoW bonus features): "Jamie Flatters plays Neteyam, he's the older brother. He's kind of the guy who most wants to be Jake. He wants to be that warrior."
Jamie Flatters in that same clip:"He just pretty much wants to walk in the footsteps of his father. He's constantly seeking approval [from Jake]"
Note that neither of these, nor anything from the movie or comics, mention anything about external "expectations" or "pressure". Any "pressure" Neteyam experiences to live up to Jake's legacy comes from himself, not from external expectations that have been forced on him. Neteyam WANTS to be a warrior. He WANTS to be like his father and do brave mature grown-up things.
And for the most part, he's pretty good at it too. He's the "golden child" who "excels in all things", the youngest Omatikaya warrior to ever make a clean kill on a sturmbeest. He's strong, smart, brave, noble, and highly skilled for his age.
He knows this, and he wants to do more. Neteyam seeks out more responsibility, especially where fighting is concerned, and it's actually Jake who is hesitant to give it to him, because naturally he fears for his son's life (a very fair and well-founded fear, all things considered :P).

In fact, on the rare occasion that Neteyam does disobey orders, it's in this context of wanting to be part of these adult matters.

"he's too busy training and patrolling instead of acting his age" He is acting his age. His age is "cusp of adulthood". He's not quite there just yet, no, but he's getting close and is eager to get there. He trains and patrols with his parents because HE WANTS TO. He begs to participate in warrior's work.
And if by "act his age" you meant "do teenager things like tease his brother, snicker about immature things, hang out and goof off," etc., guess what he does that too

[originally had a list of relevant GIFs here but tumblr decided it was allergic to them apparently; anyways you can find them all here]
As for looking after his siblings, as a certified Oldest Sibling⢠myself, I can assure you that parents expecting you to help look out for and set a good example for your younger siblings is very normal and nowhere near the mountain the fandom seems to make of this molehill.
There are valid reasons to feel sorry for Neteyamâhe, like the rest of his family, had to leave his home and start over in a new unfamiliar place among a new clan of strangers with unfamiliar customs. Heânot unlike Lo'ak!âdesperately wants a chance to prove himself to Jake, and is frustrated when his dad doesn't want to let him participate in battle. And, of course, the big oneâhis life was tragically taken far too soon.
But "overworked little sadboi who just wants to Be A Kid⢠but can't because his meanie parents force him to act like a Grownup⢠because he's under Pressure⢠to be the perfect future olo'eyktan" is not one of those reasons. That's pure fanfiction and a fundamental misunderstanding of his character. Neteyam is not "wannabe-carefree kid trapped under the crushing weight of expectations forced upon him against his will"ârather, he is "talented noble young warrior who wants to live up to his legendary father of his own volition and strives to do so".
As someone who just suffered from burn out and took a long break from writing, here's my advice: just take a break. It's okay. I forced myself to keep a weekly update schedule on top of everything else going on in my life and it seriously started to wear me down. If you force yourself to keep working on a story when you don't want to, you'll get burnt out and eventually your brain will force you to stop whether you want to or not. This is just fanfiction; you're not getting paid to do this. It's supposed to be for fun so if it gets to the point where it's not fun anymore that means it's time for a break. Don't you dare feel guilty!!
As for keeping readers engaged, just let them know when you plan to come back from your break and post updates and snippets to let them know you haven't abandoned your story.
As for chapter 26, it's okay to feel unhappy with a chapter. Unlike traditional stories, in fanfiction you don't wait until you've written the whole thing and then go back and edit everything to perfection. Even if you edit individual chapters before posting, it is totally normal to feel unsatisfied with some parts here and there. It's best to accept it and focus on making the next chapter better.
I have enjoyed your writing so much, and I will wait as long as it takes for the next update if you would like a break đđđ
All you amazing writers (and readers!) out there, could I get your advice? đđ¤
I recently posted chapter 26 of Silent as Shadows andâŚwell? Iâm not happy with it⌠đ
I have the plot already planned to the end and itâs right on track. Everything I wanted in chapter 26 is there, though admittedly I feel the last scene couldâve been held off to the next chapter. But then I felt the newest chapter was too short without it⌠đľâđŤ
I already received some good advice from the fantastic @raving-raven-writing that if Iâm burning out, I donât have to be disappointed with myself if I break my âevery Friday update!â schedule. Even the extra chapters I put up on the recent holidays, Iâm satisfied with. But the most recent one, despite itâs important plot devices? Iâm not feeling itâŚ
Somehow Iâm a functioning adult who works 60+ hours a week and live on my own. Writing these fanfics have been an amazing escapeâŚnow Iâm plagued by guilt of not giving it my all AND not keeping my schedule as promised.
Sorry, but also thank you, if you read my vent, how do you handle burn out? How do you keep your readers engaged when you need a break? I love my readers and donât want to disappoint any of them! đˇď¸đâ¨đŠľđđđ¸ď¸

Zuko's not the only one who's honor depends on capturing an Avatar...
People are so afraid of the possibility of neytiri not always being completely pure in her actions and that she is willing to do something drastic in a moment of grief. Honestly I find that idea way more interesting than "oh no, she actually cares for spider. See how she pushed him behind her in the last second!"
And then the deleted scene comes out proving me right. She was 100% on board with possibly killing spider because in that moment she wasn't thinking straight.
Like God forbid we have the "good" (I use that term with a grain of salt) characters doing questionable things because they've been pushed off the deep end.
What's the term? Morally gray?
And then Quaritch tries to say something to Spider and he gets hit with "And I'm not YOUR son either!"
Jake spent all of the comics avoiding responsibility for Spider, even after Spider betrayed his foster family to save Kiri, Lo'ak, and Tuk. Quaritch spent the whole movie lying to himself that Spider didn't mean anything to him. Then only at the end, after they've directly and indirectly hurt Spider SO much do they want to switch it up with that "a son for a son" "son, come with me" bullshit!
Neither of them deserve Spider, but unfortunately, they're the only adults trying to fill that role for him, and I want the poor kid to get SOMEBODY to fill the "parent" roleđđđ
atwow hot take:
if jake had said his "son for a son" shit out loud and spider had heard him, he would have been so beyond pissed, he would be seeing red.
spider loved his little siblings so much, neteyam included, even after they grew apart. he loved them like they were his own blood and protected them like they were too (we see a lot more of them together in the comics, where spider is the big brother without a doubt). neteyam's death most certainly rocked him hard, even if he hasn't really been able to show it (how could he? he's already going through all the shit with his dad and the RDA and their nonsense, he can't grieve around neytiri, he's just so tired after it all. he doesn't have the room or the energy to grieve yet)
so if jake had the audacity to say that to/around spider not even a few hours after he watched his little brother get shot after coming to save him, after he stared at the bullet hole in his back, after he watched him take his last breaths, after he watched the light leave his eyes, after he watched his little brother die for him; if he said that while his little brother's body lay in a pool of his own blood not even ten feet away, not even cold yet, blood still clinging to his chest, the scent of it still filling the air: he would have lost his shit.
because the disrespect for his brother is wild.
jake was an active player in spider's neglect and abuse for the last 16 years, he let it happen, he helped it happen. he tried to send spider with the humans, tried to take him away from his siblings, from the forests, from eywa to live with his foster family that didn't love him (not to mention Nash was an asswipe of epic proportions) and the RDA of all people. he had referred to spider as a stray animal since he was little. he was the reason spiders life was hell.
and after all that, years and years of putting him in shit positions and allowing him to suffer the fate of being forever unloved and uncared for (by an adult authority figure, cause I love the kids, but they don't make up for the gap left by a parent), this is what it took for jake to care about him? his little brother had to die in front of him first? he had to be traded out to fill the space of a corpse, to fill in the gap left by his little brother's death?
in canon, spider was in deep in shock with nothing to break him from it, he wasn't in the place to really think about any of it, and I'm sure we're gonna see this anger in the coming movies, but if jake had said it out loud, that would have been enough to snap spider right out of it, and he would have given jake a piece of his mind, I just know it.
