summary: in which wonwoo surprises you with food during your study session, but the generous act starts a fight that leads to deep emotions being expressed
a/n: i reread @milfgyuu ‘s Getting Closer (read if you’re a wonu/gyu thinker such as myself) and fell in love with wonwoo all over again... two hours after reading i finished this fic. also i watched my college’s soccer team play yesterday and soccer player wonwoo lives rent free in my head

“Are you still studying?”
Pulling your eyes from your math textbook, you glared up at the irritable owner of the voice, who stood in front of your table. Jeon Wonwoo, your best friend and star captain of the soccer team.
“Yeah, well, not all of us can be geniuses who effortlessly get top marks,” you muttered, looking back down at your textbook and writing down a few more notes. You heard the chair in front of you screech and felt a presence now sat in front of you.
“I can’t tell if you’re jealous of me or if you want to kiss me.”
You groaned, placing your pencil down as you rolled your eyes. Wonwoo only snickered, placing his backpack on his lap to pull something out of it. You leaned back in your chair and crossed your arms over your chest, watching as he pulled out a few Tupperware containers.
“What the hell is this?” you questioned, eyeing the food in front of you. Wonwoo opened each container, the smell of each dish making your stomach grumble.
“My mom sent a ton of food, and I thought, I can’t eat this all by myself, but then I remembered I have a nerdy best friend who forgets to eat sometimes. So here I am.” Wonwoo pulled out two pairs of chopsticks, which he definitely stole from the ramen place you ate at yesterday, handing you one before opening his own and starting to eat. You held the packaged chopsticks in your hand, blinking at your friend.
“We could’ve just gone back to your place,” you stated, opening the chopsticks before dragging a few dishes towards yourself. Wonwoo pushed a few more your way before pulling two sodas out from his bag. You cocked your brow, pointing at him with the chopsticks. “Damn, did you bring your whole fridge?”
“Funny,” he scoffed with a mouth full of food. He swallowed before continuing. “Besides, I brought the food here because I knew you wouldn’t want to leave while you were studying. So eat.”
The pair of you sat in the library for another hour, with you managing to eat and read while Wonwoo took out his Nintendo Switch and played Mario Kart. You didn’t look at the time until the last person besides you two left the building, making you wonder how late it was.
“Shit! It’s 2 AM?” you gasped, shutting your books and closing the empty Tupperware. “I have my first exam at 7 tomorrow!”
“You mean today.”
“Shut up,” you groaned, helping Wonwoo put the containers back in his bag. He pushed your hands away, putting the rest away himself. “Shit, I can’t believe this. I should’ve just sent you back so I could finish studying. Fuck, I feel even more stressed. I can’t believe you distracted me with food,” you scolded. Wonwoo scoffed, standing up from his chair abruptly.
“Yeah, I can’t believe I would go to my game, go back to my apartment, then walk all the way here with my backpack full of food just to feed my friend. Such a dick move, really. I’m so sorry, I’ll never do it again,” Wonwoo retorted, zipping his bag before standing up. “Sorry for being such a terrible friend. I’ll try not to ruin your day anymore.”
Wonwoo began to make his way to the front entrance, leaving you stood beside the table with your jaw slack. You scoffed, following after him and walking out the door behind him. As you both got outside, you put your hand on his shoulder, turning him around to face you.
“Dude, you know I didn’t mean it like that! I just -”
“Just what? Listen, I never wanted to talk about this with you, because I get it. You’re stressed, and you feel like if you don’t study for 20 hours straight you’ll fail your exams. But I feel like you never appreciate what I do for you. I care so much - more than you could ever know - but get nothing in return. You never show up to my games, even though I always talk about how important they are to me. You never eat lunch with me, and you never go to club meetings with me! The only reason you’re still in the Japanese club is because I always cover for your ass!” he cried out, cheeks red with emotion. He took a few deep breaths, voice calmer as he continued. “I try so hard to not notice your absence in my life, but I can’t help it. All I want is a friend who cares for me as much as I care for them, and I want to believe you care about me and I’m just being dramatic, but I can’t ignore everything you do,” Wonwoo sighed, furrowing his brows as he looked down at you. “Or should I say don’t do?”
You knew he had a point. As angry as you wanted to be about his outburst, you knew you had no right to be upset. He was right, you were never there for him as much as he was there for you. It had been like this since sophomore year when you finally declared a major and busied yourself with trying to catch up with everyone else. You would always ditch lunch dates with him and have only attended three of his games in the past two years. Honestly, you were shocked that you haven’t been kicked out of the Japanese club as well, seeing as you’ve only gone to the first meeting, but Wonwoo’s words made you realize just how bad a friend you were.
“My friends have been trying to tell me to stop trying with you,” he admitted, your eyes getting teary at his words. “I never listened to them. I couldn’t imagine getting rid of our friendship. I thought I could push through - I thought I could live without feeling your love. But I can’t. I don’t know why I care so much about you but I can’t stop. You mean so much to me, it scares me. But you’re so bad for me… I can’t keep doing this.”
“Wonwoo,” you mumbled, watching as he looked away with tears in his own eyes. You could sense that he was trying to let go of you now, but you were stubborn. You couldn’t lose the best thing in your life. “Please, just… hear me out.” Your words made him sigh, his head turning back towards you but his eyes not meeting yours. You bit your lip back, forming your thoughts before continuing. “I’m sorry, first of all. I know I’ve been an awful friend to you these past few years, and if you still want to drop me after I finish talking, I understand. It’s what I deserve. But Wonwoo, I do care about you. I can’t use my stress as an excuse, because I know I’ve done that too many times in the past, but I want you to know that you were the only person keeping me from losing it. All the food you’ve brought me, all the spontaneous movie nights at your place, and the notes you took for me while I studied for another class… without you, I’d probably be a college dropout, still living with my parents. If I could I would stand here forever and express how grateful I am, just to make up for how much I’ve ignored your actions. But if you give me a chance - if you allow me the opportunity to be a better friend - I promise I will never let you doubt our friendship for another second. I know it’s easy for me to just say that, but I will not let you down. If I ever make you feel like shit again, you can leave. Just please, you can’t… I need you in my life, Wonwoo. I... “ you trailed off, inhaling deeply before finishing. “I love you.”
You waited for two minutes, watching the wheels turn in Wonwoo’s mind as cars passed by and college students yelled in the distance. You weren’t focused on them though, only concentrated on your friend. You thought he had already gotten rid of you in his heart, your eyes falling to stare at the ground. But when you felt his hand tug on your hoodie sleeve, you perked up, eyes on him as he whispered.
“I’m afraid that the way you love me isn’t the same way I love you.”
You heard his voice crack, your eyes widening at his words. Your heart was racing and heat rushed to your cheeks, now matching his. Wonwoo’s hand remained on your hoodie, fingers tightly gripping the fabric. You blinked, hearing him sigh.
“I’m sorry. You should go back and sleep. You have your exam soon,” Wonwoo stated, pulling his hand back. He looked at you one more time, biting the inside of his cheek before turning away, starting his walk back to his apartment. He left you alone once again, your mind running a mile a minute. When you finally came to your senses, you ran after him, catching him just before he crossed the street. You put your hand on his shoulder, turning him to face you. Instead of talking, you grabbed his face and pulled him down towards you, your lips meeting in a long-awaited embrace.
It took him a few seconds to register what was happening, but when he finally did, his shoulders relaxed, and his hands covered yours. He kissed back with more passion than you, his hands running up your arms, over your shoulders, and down your spine before finding their place on your waist, underneath your hoodie. He shivered at the feeling of your cold skin, pulling you closer as if to try to warm you. Craving his warmth, you wrapped your arms around his neck and pressed your body against his.
Wonwoo never failed to make you feel warm. You never thought much about it until tonight, but Wonwoo was the only person who could make you feel the way he makes you feel.
He was the first to pull away, but your bodies remained close as you stared at each other, out of breath from the kiss. You both opened your mouths to speak, words tangled with one another as you spoke. Wonwoo cleared his throat, nodding at you.
“You first.”
“Okay.” You inhaled, then began. “I hope you know that kissing you was not a way for me to get you to stay. I have thought about doing that so many times, but I never knew…”
“That I was in love with you? I could say the same thing about you,” Wonwoo stated, making you sigh.
“I’m sorry for being so terrible to you.”
“It’s okay. Well… not entirely. It still hurts, really bad, but I think I’ll be able to get over it. I’ve discovered the cure to my sadness, you know.”
“What are you talking about?” you questioned, watching him grin. He pressed his lips against yours, a smile growing on his face as he pulled away again.
“Your kisses. I’m now cured of all sadness.”
You chuckled, shaking your head in disbelief. “And you call me the nerd.”
“You are the nerd. But you’re my nerd.”
“Oh my god, I can’t believe you just said that. Let go of me - I can’t be friends with a cliché!”
“Oh - friends?” Wonwoo blinked, his hold on you loosening slightly. You blinked as well, feeling a sense of awkwardness rush over.
“Well I - we are friends but… did you…” you trailed off, unsure of how to say what you wanted. You and Wonwoo took a step back from one another, arms now crossed over your chest and body feeling colder than before.
“I mean… I kind of figured since we… kissed…”
“Are we… together now?” you asked, eyes hopeful as you looked up at him. He avoided your eye contact, but the blush on his cheeks got redder than before.
“If that’s what you want as well,” he stated, catching your eyes. You both looked away this time, a small smile resting on both of your faces.
“I would, very much so.”
You and Wonwoo locked eyes, your smiles widening as you embraced one another in a tight hug. Warmth spread throughout your body again, and you felt as if your smile could never fade.
“I promise to be better for you, Wonwoo, and to never make you doubt my love for you,” you mumbled into his chest, holding him as if you would never let go. Wonwoo buried his face into your neck, pressing a gentle kiss on the sensitive skin.
“And I promise to be there for you always and to never let you skip a meal.”
“Funny.”
“I try my best.”

the last night | na jaemin

pairing: jaemin x gn!reader
genre: angst, fluff
warnings: growing up and moving on
word count: 1216
summary: in which you and jaemin are best friends going your separate ways after high school
a/n: i’m in a mood and i keep thinking about my future

“You didn’t need to buy all these things, Jaemin.”
Your eyes fell to the blanket, sprawled on the grass in front of you. There was a plethora of food, including your favorite fruits and snacks. Jaemin shrugged, hands in his pockets as he stood beside you.
“I know, but… I was at the store and decided to buy some things. It’s no big deal, and it’s not like it’ll go to waste. After all that packing, I’m sure you’re hungry. I know I am.”
He was right. You hadn’t eaten since dinner last night, and it’s because you’ve been packing all day. Packing and crying, actually, since it was your last full day in your home. Tomorrow morning you will leave for your new college, far from this small town you grew up in. It didn’t feel real until today. Seeing all your things in boxes, and your family crying along with you. It was heartbreaking. The end of a long era. But you knew this is what you wanted. You couldn’t go back now.
Yet everything inside you was screaming to turn back.
“Let’s sit, my legs are getting tired,” Jaemin interrupted your thoughts, taking your hand before sitting on the blanket, pulling you down with him. You plopped beside him, smiling as he began to grab a few of the snacks off the blanket. You followed his lead, grabbing a few things and placing them in front of you. The pair of you began to eat quietly, watching the sun fall past the horizon. After a bag or two of chips, you sighed, laying back onto the blanket. Jaemin followed suit, his body laying beside yours and his head touching yours.
“Have you been dancing a lot?” you asked, recalling that Jaemin mentioned his legs being tired. You felt him nod.
“My manager sent me a few practice videos. I just wanted to work on them before I went back to the dorm.”
“I still can’t believe you got to debut - I mean, of course I believe it. You’re a talented person, Jaemin. I just mean it’s crazy that you’re an idol now. And you’re finally able to achieve your dreams.” Your eyes glanced to the stars, which shined brightly above you. They resembled Jaemin. He always shined, even more so now that he was an idol.
“Yeah, it’s crazy. But hey, you know what else is crazy? After all that slacking this year, NYU still wants you to join them,” Jaemin pointed out, earning a slap to the arm by you.
“I didn’t slack off, idiot. I just didn’t stress myself out to get everything done. The past year was meant to be easy, and it was. Also, if anyone was slacking, it was definitely you,” you accused, remembering a certain study night where you worked on your Psychology homework and Jaemin watched a true crime documentary on Netflix instead of calculating his trig problems.
“Ah, it’s okay. I do better in my new school anyway,” he smiled, turning to look at you. You shook your head, but he caught your smile, his heart warming at the sight. He was going to miss you dearly. It hurt sometimes, him being a new idol and you being a full time student. He tried to visit frequently, making time for study sessions and sleepovers. But now you have graduated, and you were moving to an entirely different continent to continue your school career. Jaemin was staying in Seoul to continue working as a member of NCT Dream, and he doubted he’d ever be able to make a trip to New York just to see you.
As Jaemin laid in thought beside you, your eyes fell from the stars, turning slightly to observe the park. It wasn’t busy anymore. Nearly everyone had left besides an elderly couple and a group of students, who seemed to be participating in a book club. You bit your lip back, flashbacks of this past year hitting you deeply.
“This is really it, Jaemin,” you whispered, a lump growing in your throat at the thoughts clouding your mind. You felt Jaemin sit up beside you, his eyes peering over at you.
“What is?” he asked, placing a hand on your arm.
“It’s the last night,” you choked, your hand grasping the fabric of your shirt, near your breaking heart. You were moving far away, and you didn’t know when you would see each other again. You felt the tears form at your eyes, soft whimpers escaping your lips. “The last night before we both leave.”
At your hushed words and sudden shift in tone, Jaemin sighed. He took your hands gently, lifting you up before enveloping you in his arms. His action only caused you more heartbreak, your tears starting their descent. Eventually, Jaemin found himself crying as well.
“This won’t be the last night, I promise,” he mumbled into your hair, his hand moving up and down your back in a comforting manner. You gripped tightly onto his hoodie, burying your face in his neck.
“You can’t know that for sure, Jaemin… I’m moving to America, and you’re living in Seoul. We won’t have time for each other… These past few years, when you’ve been training... and then when you finally debuted... I didn’t know what to do with myself… and now I’m leaving and I don’t even know when I’ll visit-”
“Hey, shh. Breathe, okay?” Jaemin interrupted, holding you tighter. You silenced yourself, pouting and hushing your sobs. Jaemin pulled you away from him, his hands on your shoulders as he smiled sadly at you. “What did I tell you about thinking of the future?”
“Jaemin…”
“You can’t predict the future. Saying all these things, that we won’t see each other again, it means nothing to me. And it shouldn’t mean anything to you. The future is what we make it, yeah? So in the future, we will visit each other, and there will be many other nights spent together. I will make it happen, okay? I promise that you don’t need to be upset over this.” Jaemin hugged you again, realizing your tears had stopped falling. He felt your arms wrap around his torso, making his smile return.
“We’re going to be okay, and we’re going to see each other again. I can’t promise that it will be soon, but it will happen. We’re best friends, right? I won’t let you get away that easily.”
You chuckled softly at his words, shaking your head on his chest.
“Yeah, because me moving to New York was just some big ploy to get rid of you.”
“I knew it all along. You’re terrible at hiding things.” Jaemin smiled at you, and you smiled at him. Suddenly, the future seemed bright.
Jaemin always knew how to make you feel better. Being friends with you for nearly ten years, he knew how to get yourself out of your own head. He knew when you were falling, just as he knew how to pick you up.
You weren’t sure what you were going to do without him there beside you, but for now, you won’t think of that. Right now, you wanted to stay in Jaemin’s arms and enjoy the rest of the night with him, because this was your present, and it’s better to live in the present than to worry about a future you can’t predict.
