"you know i can't dance, minghao"

your boyfriend chuckles fondly but keeps tugging at your hand, successfully coaxing you into standing from your comfortable seat on the couch. the speaker on corner table plays a familiar melody, and a frown makes it's way to your face as your mind tries to pair it with a song you know.

"it's easy", he soothes, leading you to the center of the living room, "no hard steps, i promise. you'll like it".

you doubt it. this is not what you had hoped to spend your evening doing. a glance at the elegant wall-clock reveals there's 5 minutes till midnight, which means you'll spend the eve of your birthday dancing. not the worst thing you've done on the day, but you were kind of hoping for a quiet evening with minghao. you've never been one for celebrations and attention.

"okay, let's get this over with". you've known this man long enough to recognize the determined glint in his eyes.

"that's the spirit", he steps forward, his face inches from yours, "your hands go here", his voice is soft, even softer than the touches that place your hands on his shoulders, "and mine", his arms wound around your waist gently, "go here".

"are you sure this position is for dancing?", you breathe, looking at him through your lashes, "i'm totally fine with the alternative, by the way. totally".

he rests his forehead against yours and chuckles, fond eyes meeting yours, his face glowing in the dim light.

"later", he whispers lowly, brushing his lips against yours, "that's for later, i promise".

he moves his head before you can respond, his cheek brushing on your shoulder. his body starts swaying slowly to the beat of the song, and you find yourself doing the same, your arms instinctively moving to wrap around his neck while his tighten around your waist.

somewhere in the back of your mind, it clicks - you definitely know this song.

"are we dancing to false god?", the incredulous note in your voice breaks the intimate atmosphere, "taylor swift's false god?"

"you like the song", minghao answers nonchalantly, but you spot the faint pink rising up his neck, "it's nice, it's soft".

"it's also about - "

"shh", the breath against your ear makes you shiver, "don't overthink this, just dance with me".

we're not dancing, you want to say, we're swaying awkwardly. before you can open your mouth though, the song ends and soft piano fills the room as the next track starts. yours, by ella henderson.

he remembers.

["it's a little sad for a song about love, i think", minghao comments while you play the song on repeat, "especially for your taste. you generally like those poppy love songs"

"i do love my poppy songs", you clutch your heart dramatically, grinning at his smiley eye-roll, "but there's something about this one, you know? makes you want to dance in dim lights at midnight"]

"you remember", you whisper in his ear, pulling him closer and pressing a kiss on his skin, "oh god, you remember. i love you".

"a low price to pay for your love", he chuckles, "i love you too".

it's just the music then, echoing through the walls of the home you've built with minghao, while the two of you bask in its melody, wrapped around each other and swaying slowly. he breaks the quiet in the last chorus, his voice so soft that you would've missed it if his lips were not pressed to your ear.

"i know you don't like celebrating, so we won't. but", he pulls back slightly to whisper against your lips, arms still holding you close, "happy birthday, my love".
