I think the best part of coming out for me was to be released from the expectations of leading the life of a heterosexual man, which not to make waves here, I think is a burden that even heterosexual men themselves individually have a hard time accepting.

men police other men to conform every single day. the kind of haircut you have, the clothes you wear, the colors, the patterns, the accessories, your interests, your speech, your attitude, the media you consume. you tend to be punished physically, emotionally and socially for all kinds of small deviations until you “learn to be a man”.

since being out, I’ve had several heterosexual male friends say that they like my style or that they’re jealous that I get to wear whatever I like because it would be unthinkable for them to do the same due to these invisible social constraints.

I am fortunate enough to be in a position of privilege in which coming out was never a risk for my safety in any respect and thankful to be born in a time in which my elder gays were already pushing for rights and visibility. by the time I was a young adult, loud and cartoonish homophobia was seen as an embarrassment in my social bubble.

Im not going to say I had no difficulties but the damage I thought I would do by coming out really ended up being non-existent. It’s hard to think of my own journey and not feel like somehow the hard part of the battle had already been fought for me. this isn’t an individual triumph.

I think the mission of people in positions similar to mine is using this privilege to elevate the members of our community whom are most vulnerable. it’s realizing that there’s no real victory for any of us until all of us have crossed the finish line.

finally, I think being proud is also about being vigilant. it’s knowing that this place we occupy was a conquest, not a concession. and as we’ve seen recently with the overturning of Roe, there are those who still wait in the shadows for an opportunity to drag us back into our closets (or worse).
