I think something special is happening on YouTube right now

By now you’ve probably heard the most subscribed channel Pewdiepie at 68 million subscribers is about to be surpassed by T series, a channel that is basically Indian Vevo. Its a big moment in YouTube’s history since Pewdiepie has held the record for spot for 8 years. While even he himself doesn’t feel bad about being dethroned, a lot of people including myself see this as a sad moment–one that represents YouTube’s core values truly switching from individual creators to massive money making companies. That’s really disappointing despite its inevitability, and this moment symbolizes that. I started watching livestreams of the sub counts feeling the sadness of the moment slowly approaching, estimates saying it would happen within 12 hours.

But then it didn’t. That was 2 days ago. I think T series was 100k away from the title and now there’s a 600k gap. There’s been a huge outpouring of support for Pewdiepie, many attributing to MrBeast’s efforts to advertise in his town like crazy to subscribe to Pewds. It really seemed to work, Pewds7’ daily sub count more than doubled after MrBeast’s video. And of course its still steadily rising ahead of T series.

T series is going to win, there are only so many people out there that can and are willing to subscribe to Pewdiepie. But its been great to see this moment go from sad to one last hurrah of support for a beloved channel, showing that even if YouTube’s values have changed, that of its audience has not.
