"How do you know when you're in love?"

An innocent enough question when asked by a newly graduated genin, or even a young teenager who was finding out his feelings are a bit more complicated than he thought.

But from the captain of the ANBU? It almost felt pitiable. The question betrayed something far darker. A boy who had grown up without a family. A boy molded by the darkness of the Foundation. A boy who had to be taught many things about just being a person.

A man who had to read books to understand his own emotions because no one else could be trusted enough. A man who only really knew those who had served on his teams, only to have them leave again and again and again.

A man who hid behind a mask in both the literal sense and the figurative sense, smiling to hide everything else. And speaking of masks, the literal mask rested on his face, hiding his countenance so he didn't have to feel ashamed to ask questions. The mask of a sly cat who knew how to escape any situation, even the awkward ones he put himself in.
