Centuries of instinct is telling you that there is something wrong, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the source of your discomfort is the eerie figure that has been walking a good twenty feet behind you for the last four blocks. You’re not sure if they’re trying to be conspicuous or if this is their terrible attempt at subtle stalking but it has your metaphorical hackles raised anyway.

Shoulders hunching together even more, you quicken your pace as much as you can without it looking suspicious and listen to the way your Converse slap against the wet concrete floor. You haven’t even seen a car cruise past yet, but you’re not too surprised given it’s 3 in the morning.

Cursing Alex and his incessant need to go out partying whenever there’s even a whiff of pot in the air, you lament the fact you’d agree to take on his shift at the convenience store. And you then curse the fact that you’d applied for a job so damn far from your apartment.

The walk is nice and almost leisurely in the day, but in the foreboding atmosphere of the night it’s horrifying. Yellow tinged street lights flicker and buzz in the almost silence, the only sign of civilisation being the faint sirens and sounds of cars in the distance and you shiver as a cool breeze passes by.

Holding the strap of your bag closer to your body, you tug the material of your jacket and try to make yourself look as small and non-descript as possible. Eyes flickering up from your red and white sneakers to the vivid neon of the 24/7 alcohol store just up ahead, you let out a brief sigh of relief at the sign of people.

The Truth of BuzzFeed’s Grindr BBQ

The Buzzfeed article was titled “This Man Invited People To A “BBQ Not Orgy” On Grindr And It Was Surprisingly Heartwarming.” It’s about how Chris Bowman, a 61 year old man from Apex, North Carolina has been hosting an annual summer BBQ. He advertises this BBQ through the gay dating/hookup app, Grindr. It’s about how the event is surprisingly sweet and Bowman, who is a recovered alcoholic, wants to give back to the community and bring people together.

TL;DR Chris is a registered sex offender with a history of pedophilia and preying on young people. His ‘not an orgy’ and community talk is a gaslighting tactic to groom young people into having sex with him. Buzzfeed, Vice, and other social media outlets giving his event a platform endangers LGBT youth.

A group of four of us (J, M, S, and A) attended the BBQ in the summer of 2017. J received an invite similar to the one shown in the Buzzfeed article over Grindr, and we’re young and dumb so we decided what the hell, let’s go. We rolled up and saw a fire truck and ambulance already there. He’d invited the local fire department and EMS to attend the BBQ. The food was admittedly very good, and the crowd was a strange mix of after-church and from Grindr. Most of the other folks at the BBQ seemed fine and kind. Buzzfeed got that right. Here is what they left out:

1997: Chris is giving Daniel, a 14 yo boy, a golf lesson. He locks the doors to the store and turns off the lights. He comes up behind Daniel under the impression of adjusting the child’s technique. He reaches down into Daniel’s underwear and molests him.

1998: Chris’s daughter has two friends over for a slumber party. They are sisters. When everyone is asleep, Jessica, a 15 yo girl, is walking down the stairs of his multi-level house. Chris approaches, pulls down her shorts, and performs oral sex on her. He stops when Jessica’s sister stumbles upon the scene.

2005: Chris provides his house as a location for two friends, a 24 yo and 18 yo, to have sex with their underage girlfriends, 14 yo and 15 yo.

He appealed his 2005 convictions that testimony from 1997 & 98 was inadmissible in the determination of guilt phase of his trial.

THE BBQ

Chris knew who we were and immediately inserted himself into our group. We figured, yeah we’ll talk with him a while—he gave us all this food, so we kind of have to (!!THIS IS HIS STRATEGY!!). Anyway, we listened to him talk about orgies, sex, golf, and drugs in Europe for about an hour. Topics he hit:

-        Orgies he’d attended in downtown Paris where you circled the arc de triumph in your car until forming a chain of other searching cars that would eventually peel off into a warehouse or somewhere to initiate the orgy. It’s cool you, should totally try it sometime! OKAY.

-        He talked a lot about how his favorite drug to use was Black Beauty

-        He talked a lot about how good the golfing was in Scotland (He molested a 14 yo boy in 1997 while teaching a golf lesson!)

-        He spent a lot of time trying to convince us to attend the “BBQ After Dark”

The heat was incredible that day and we were starting to get tired of his weird sex talk. Chris saw this and asked J what was wrong. J told him it was just kind of hot. Chris followed up by inviting J to go on and take his shirt off. J said no, he was fine. Chris said, “Oh no, come on! Take your shirt off! I’ll take my shirt off!” J ignored it. We were all uncomfortable. Throughout the ENTIRE event, Chris constantly reminded us about the after dark portion of the BBQ, which we were all very invited to. We had no plans of going, but kept our refusals soft and polite out of respect, because again, the BBQ is a tactic to make you treat him kinder and feel bad about thinking he’s creepy.

THE NEXT DAY

This was when the solicitations started. For the next year and a half until J deleted his Grindr last fall, Chris continued to send J messages trying to move things forward. He also tried to pick up A and S through J’s Grindr. He’s talked about how he’s really excited about the buzz the event has been getting and how he’s hoping the event will grow and grow. J hasn’t responded to the messages that have kept coming for over a year. Attached are a few screenshots.

CONCLUSION

We tried to contact Buzzfeed after the article was first published about how they had misrepresented the nature of the event. When they didn’t respond, we didn’t think it mattered too much. Maybe we were being too critical? The food was good… However, now that we are aware of Chris’s history of pedophilia, we want to make sure anyone who decides to attend knows what to expect.

Author’s Note: This story is a combination of three things: Stephen King’s memoir/writing advice book “On Writing” which I recently finished reading, my trip to a county fair where I spent way too long talking to a farm boy about the intricacies of dairy cattle breeding, and a crazed caffeine-fueled BTS sex dream.

Stephen King talks in his book about how he views stories as found objects. The writer doesn’t create them, just uncovers them and brings them into focus, like a paleontologist uncovering a fossil. It lets you judge a piece honestly without feeling like you’re judging yourself. I’m sure it also helped Stephen King distance himself from some of the intense stuff he wrote. 

So don’t judge me too hard for writing this half-porn, half-nightmare trash. I didn’t set out to write it, I just found it in my brain.

I know it’s easy to keep stereotyping Yoongi as cold/lazy/cut off kind of person but sometimes i think it gets to a point where it’s wrong and hurtful in the fandom. And so here’s a list of reasons Min Yoongi is a warm, hard working individual with a personality that is multi-faceted and beautiful.

was a member of the student council when he was in school and was always helping people who approached him and writing them encouraging messages, contrary to popular ‘bad boy’ image belief.

works into late hours of the night, even goes without sleeping when he’s concentrating on composing a new song/lyrics and spends hours on end in the studio

on that note, it is said he recorded the way he said ‘bulteorune’ about 200 times before he was satisfied with how it sounded

despite not being the lead dancer, is almost never criticized for his dance skills because he clearly works hard on it, whether or not he’s the best

again, a side note that he spent his birthday with hoseok practicing dance that hoseok taught him

his stage presence is full of energy and he even kneeled down and bowed for a good minute of stage when he knew his parents were in the crowd, and otherwise also displays emotions on stage, including crying

gets shy and touched when members throw him a surprise birthday party

extremely considerate of what fans think/feel, unlike a lot of other idols. he’s responsible enough to know the effect his words have on fans and therefore constantly promotes a healthy body image, saying he doesn’t have ideal an outfit/weight/height/personality type

that time he spent his own money to buy personal gifts/write different messages for 300+ fans on his birthday, and then did it again the next year too

branching off to the time when he got asked on a radio interview what he’d do with the royalties of the songs he produced (jump/tomorrow) and he replied that he’d take the band and stuff out for lunch with his own money

the new years day yoongi didn’t spend with own family just because hoseok was lonely in the dorms

that time namjoon was supposed to perform on stage and yoongi was deadpan the whole performance until it was namjoon’s turn, and then he has laughing and singing and screaming and being super supportive

once when the members were just annoying jungkook a little and yoongi sensed jungkook felt a little sad so he wordlessly reached out to him and petted him and said ‘I think he’s adorable’

on that note, always sensing the members discomfort/sadness and being a silent supporter and saying encouraging things to make them feel better

never holds back of compliments. ever.

he is a wonderful, multi-faceted man with emotions other than being ‘dead inside’ and loves the people around him so much and is full of appreciation and support for them and endlessly a source of strength for them.
