ok so i’ve talked about this briefly before but here’s my explanation for the mobility of railcars.
so all rail creatures are a mix of organic matter and mechanical parts. this is why that ashley understands that she may have a stroke if she keeps smoking, despite the fact that she’s a wooden railway carriage. this organic matter is what allows any piece of rolling stock to move on their own, to a certain extent. because of the total mass of rolling stock, their own organic strength to move themselves must fight against their own weight. railcars lack these internal mechanisms to assist in movement so they rely solely upon on their natural energy, which tends to tire out after about 20-30 or so yards. at that point, they require an engine to help move them to where they need to go. when a train of railcars are coupled together, their combined momentum and energy allows them to travel farther distances than they would individually. engines have an advantage because in conjunction with their own organic strength, they have internal mechanical mechanisms to assist in their movement, be it steam, oil, or electricity. however if an engine’s mechanical aids are not working for whatever reason, they are put on the same playing field as railcars and must rely on their own organic energy to move themselves.
yeah that’s how i personally like to see it.
