A detail about Kristoph's prison cell that had escaped me until now, is the bird in the cage (one would hope its ornamental, not alive).

It's specifically a blue bird.

Which brings to mind the Bluebird of Happiness, from folklore and especially Maeterlinck's play. It is a symbol that is used often enough in Japanese media that there is a good chance this is intentional.

This is incredibly interesting when interpreted in relation to Kristoph (and Phoenix.) The Bluebird of Happiness is often interpreted to mean something like "happiness is right in front of you, you need not go out and seek it elsewhere" and "happiness is something you set free and spread to others to gain reward".

Kristoph, who always strives for perfect control and greater heights, is neglecting to see the happiness in front of him (like the friendship he could have had) and further he refuses to set this happiness free - to give up his control and openly engage with others.

And of course it is a fun coincidence that the man that Kristoph has been closest to for seven years, the man he refuses to release from his desperate grasp for control, the man he refuses to open up to even when begged... is well known for his theme color, blue.

...... or I could be making a lot of far-fetched shit up about like five pixels, that's also an option! I did enjoy the thoughtplay though.
