Pater noster... (Alfie Solomons x Fem!OC)

Alfie Solomons x Rose Coldwell - Masterlist
Summary: "Pray for your soul, Evert. Repeat after me: 'Pater noster, qui es in caelis...'". Alfie Solomons inside the Church, behind the man, held the rosary against Evert's throat. Frederick Evert was dying. Alfie's soul found his revenge. A long and very awaited revenge.
Warnings: The Everts are a piece of shit, so: Antisemitism. Mentions of r*pe and psychological and physical harm. || Manslaughter/Death. || Latin, because back then they prayed in that language.
Words: 3k.

1913
Mary-Anne was a woman who lived on another side of London, near where two years earlier Rose had the Suffragette headquarters when they had been burned down and could never be restored. It was the territory of the Italians.
But Mary-Anne was a woman who needed her help. She lived alone and had recently become a mother and the baby, who had been premature and needed extra care. And that's where Rose was going. The two women had met about a year ago when a mutual friend had arranged a tea party. She wasn't the first and wouldn't be the last woman to help. What she didn't know was that she wouldn't get to see Mary-Anne.
Rose's mind was elsewhere. She was worried because the world's political climate was hanging in the balance, neither she nor Alfie would say it out loud but the imminent arrival of war was almost inevitable. And Rose didn't even want to think about it. A war at that time meant that every man of fighting age would surely be conscripted and that included her husband and middle brother. Her younger brother was still very young, but if the war entended on time Louis would also be called to fight. But she would not show her concern in front of Alfie. Not when the days together with him, after two years of marriage, were proving so enjoyable. Their honeymoon for almost a month in Budapest was still on her mind and they had promised each other to return at some point.
Worried about what was inevitably coming, Rose didn't hear the man approaching her until it was too late. Mary-Anne lived on a distant street and no one saw the man grab the woman by the neck from behind and drag her into an alley.
"Bitch, you ruined my life and my family's life!"
She couldn't see him, but the voice was unmistakable. Her hairs stood on end. It was Frederick Evert, her former brother-in-law. A member of an anti-Semitic family that did nothing but cause her psychological damage for over four years.
"It's not my brother who should have died, it should have been you," Frederick pushed her further against a brick wall and Rose could feel blood pouring from her temple running down her cheek. "We should have known from the moment he became obsessed with you that bringing a fucking Jewess into our house was going to bring nothing but shit into our lives. You and your kind are nothing but a fucking disgrace to humanity. A piece of shit!"
"Let me go, motherfucker!"
"I know you married again, bitch. You didn't even respect Lawrie's memory. He put you out of your misery, you were practically eating garbage when he took you as his wife. I'm going to kill you sooner or later, and I'm going to get Pebblebrock again, you turned my house into a pigsty for bitches like you."
"I dare you to do it."
"I wouldn't, if I were you." Frederick pushed her head more firmly against the bricks as she tried to wriggle free. But Evert was much stronger. "It didn't take me long to set fire to that pathetic place you called a job. I don't know why you're wasting your time, you and all the others bitches should just be locked in the kitchen and in the bedroom spread for us. Lawrence knew about that."
Rose's head was spinning. The pressure was getting to be too much and she was dizzy. And now, he was gripping her wrist so tightly that the marks of his fingers soon appeared on her skin. She feared she would collapse at any moment. But at that moment, some voices made themselves heard.
"Hey! Leave her alone!"
Out of the corner of her eye, Rose could see two men approaching Frederick. The latter, pushed her one last time against the wall with force. This time she lost consciousness and fell to the floor. Frederick ran away.
"I know her," said one of the men in an Italian accent. "She's Alfie Solomons' wife."
The Italian man crouched down beside her and tried to pick her off, to no avail. The other ran to the only person he knew who could help at that moment.
.
"Darby?"
Rose opened her eyes and found herself facing Darby Sabini. They were in what appeared to be an office. Around it she could see several books and a wooden desk. Darby was Alfie's enemy, but a friend of hers. After all, Darby was the only other person she had known since they were children. There was a relationship of mutual respect between the two.
"Rose, you scared me to death. What happened?"
"Darby, I want to see Alfie. I need to see Alfie!" She tried to get up but the Italian put a hand on her shoulder preventing her.
"I already sent for him, but I'm not going to let you get up from there, yet. One of my doctors said you'd better not move because you've suffered a major concussion. One of my men and a friend of his found you and I think you were lucky. Do you also collect enemies like your husband?"
Rose shook her head. Frederick Evert's voice popped back into her head and with that, so did the image of Lawrence who by this time had been dead for four years. She couldn't stop the tears from running down her cheeks.
"No, Rose, no. I didn't mean to," Darby put an arm on her shoulder and tried to comfort her. "You know the relationship I have with Alfie, but whatever happened happened in my territory. And I'm not going to let it happen again. Who is he?"
As she was finally about to answer, the door opened. Without greeting, without bothering to ask permission, Alfie had just walked through the door of Darby Sabini's office in search of his wife. He crouched down in front of the chair where she was sitting and wrapped his arms around her. He felt her sob into his shoulder.
"I'm here, luv. I'm here now," Alfie put a hand on her head, and stroked her hair lovingly. "What happened, Rosie?"
"A man attacked her," Sabini interjected, looking at the couple. There was a time when he had also been in love with her. Perhaps that was why he also maintained a polite relationship with her. Even though he always knew he would never have had a chance with her. For him Alfie was a waste of oxygen, but Rose was a good person.
"One of you? Sabini! One of you bloody wops, attacked my wife?"
"My men don't attack women, Alfie!" Sabini raised his voice visibly offended "I don't know who it was! But for sure not my men! You should be thankful that one of them saved Rose from that bastard who got away!"
Alfie felt Rose, who was still hugging him, whisper in his ear, "It was Frederick Evert. Frederick Evert came back."
He froze. That last name had been cursed from the first moment she had entered that house and the eldest of the brothers had set his eyes on the girl, then only sixteen years old. After meeting Rose again, three years earlier, and marrying her, Alfie thought the Everts would be forever a part of the past. But evidently that had not been the case.
Sabini saw Alfie's eyes fill with hatred. He did know that last name. Not like the couple, but he knew who they were. For those years when Alfie had been forced to understand that the Everts had separated Rose from him, Sabini had heard that surname more than once.
"I want to be alone with my wife," Alfie said looking at Sabini. Darby nodded before standing up, walking out of his own office.
"Sweetheart, Rosie, what happened?" Alfie pulled away from her slightly and could see the wound on her temple. He carefully caressed that area and deposited a kiss there. He also saw the marks on her right wrist. Evert had dared to attack the only person he loved. Evert's days were numbered.
She told him what the man had said and done, including about the fire. And Alfie never felt so angry in his life. As she talked, he vowed that Frederick Evert would suffer at his own hands. He wouldn't be the first he'd killed, but for the first time bloodlust gripped him.
"I can't leave that life behind, Al. I can't."
"I promise he won't bother you again, Rosie. Ever again. I promise." Alfie took her face in his hands and kissed her briefly.
Rose looked at her husband knowing what he meant, but shook her head. "Don't get his blood on your hands, love."
"Don't worry about me, sweetheart."
But when it was certain that she could move, that it had been nothing more than a heavy blow, the Solomons left Sabini's office.
Alfie would have liked to get out of there as soon as possible, but opted to follow Sabini's doctor's words and wait a little longer. There was no telling what damage the blow Evert delivered to Rose's head might have caused.
"Darby," she said, turning to look at him "thank you. For everything, I owe you one."
"No, Rose. You don't owe me anything."
She smiled at him and he nodded his head. "Alfie," he called just before they left. "I'll let you know what I find out. And just this once, you'll have access to my territory. Just this once."
.
For a few days, Rose didn't leave their house. The white dog named Fancy that they had, used to spend the mornings lying beside her happy that her owner was with herat all times. And if Alfie wasn't also there at all times it was because Rose had assured him that she would be fine. Likewise, Alfie would only go to the distillery for a few hours before returning to her side.
But that day would be different. A telegram from Sabini arrived that morning at Alfie's office.
"St. Matthew's Church. 8pm."
Only four words but they said it all. He and Sabini would never be on the same side of the coin again, but this one time they would.
The wait took forever. As the sun began to set, Alfie braced himself. In his pocket he carried his pistol and at his side, there were two of his best men.
At any other time the entry of those three into Italian territory would have triggered a war. But not this time.
Sabini was waiting for him.
"He lives in a house two blocks from the church. I found out that he always goes there to pray. Always at the same time and always in the same seat. You'll recognize him."
Alfie nodded.
Before 8pm, Alfie and the two men walked in. They were three Jews in a Catholic church about to commit murder. There was a bit of divine justice in all that.
There weren't many people. Just a couple of people who were kneeling, immersed in their prayers. In the pew Sabini had indicated they saw the figure of a man. Unmistakable. His clothes matched the sobriety of the rest of the people present.
Alfie sat behind him and his men on either side of Evert. He, did not seem to pay any attention to them.
Two of the women who were praying finally left and fifteen minutes later the others did. Only four people remained inside and only three would leave.
When he tried to get up, the men at his sides prevented him.
"You're not getting out of here, Frederick Evert." Alfie's voice came from behind him. It was an ice-cold whisper. For a moment Evert thought it was the devil talking. He wasn't so wrong.
"What the hell is going on? Who are you people! This is the Lord's house!"
"Not mine. I'm what you call 'a piece of Jewish shit' that's what you called me wife, ain't it?" Alfie put a hand on the man's shoulder. And he brought his head close behind him speaking in his ear. A shiver ran down Frederick's back.
"It was an unimportant threat. I didn't…"
"Yes, you won't do anything. I know that. Because you're a worthless worm, ain't you, right? you're who will never be anything but a shit on someone's shoe. Not like your brother, you lived your whole life in his shadow. And even in death ya couldn't beat him, could ya? How does it feel that mommy always preferred little Lawrie, hmm? My Rosie was smart. Wasn't she? With your brother dead you thought you'd finally be Lord and master of Pebblebrock, a manor that was rightfully yours, and yet… yeah, right? My sweet Rosie made your brother leave everything to her."
Alfie found what he was looking for when he put his cold fingers around Evert's neck. Guys like him always wore one pretending to use it as a symbol that they were better than the rest of humanity, when they were nothing more than racists who considered Christianity to be the only valid religion. The rosary with the crucifix were now on Alfie's fingers.
"A fucking Jewess, she was smarter than you and that's something you can't beat."
Evert tried to pull Alfie's hands away, to no avail. He didn't dare speak either. Contrary to the man behind him who didn't intend to shut up.
"Where were ya when your brother was raping my Rosie?" the rosary squeezed his neck and Frederick coughed. "Where were ya when she was crying? When your fucking mother was threatening her family? Where were you when the old shit threatened to send Rose's little brother, only 14 years old, right? to the battlefield? Where were you when you and the rest of your family laughed at her for being Jewish and forced her to celebrate Christmas with little regard for her religion? WHERE!"
His shout echoed in the empty church. Along with it only Evert's gasping breath could be heard as he fought to breathe in every atom of oxygen possible. Alfie loosened the tension in Evert's neck a little.
"I-I'm sorry. I'm sorry!" Frederick coughed. "Please, I didn't know we'd caused Rose so much damage. I'm really sorry!"
"No. No, you're not, you were never sorry. Your brother was a rapist and you his accomplice and surely you are like him too. Your mother's blood runs through your veins, I won't believe you are someone who regrets his actions. You hurt my wife days ago. You only say you're sorry because you don't want me to kill ya but it's not going to happen. I'm going to kill ya and I'm going to enjoy it, Evert. But first let's pray together, Evert. I'm an open-minded man so I'll join you in your Lord's Prayer."
"Please don't…"
"Pater noster…" Alfie pressed the rosary again against the neck of Frederick Evert who did not speak, pathetic sobs coming from him. "I told you to pray, Evert. I'm not one to repeat things, so do it. Pater…"
"Pater noster qui es in caelis…"
"Good boy, Evert, keep praying…" Alfie pressed the rosary even tighter against the man's neck as he prayed. His nose was beginning to drip snot that mixed with tears. Alfie whispered in his ear again "It just so happened that shortly before my good mother died a year and a half ago, I discovered that in the same nursing home also resided someone named Mildred Evert. What a coincidence, ain't it? I would never have guessed it were it not for the fact that Rose recognized her. Sitting at the window, with no idea that the victim of her unjustified hatred was near her. Oh yes. Once again, my Rosie had to suffer because of an Evert."
"Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie…" Frederick Evert could barely breathe, but he could hear.
"Ya want me to tell you the real cause of your mother's death?" Frederick felt Alfie smile against his ear. "It was easy, she was already old. Send my regards to her when you fall into hell. Also to your brother who I would have loved to meet. Finally Rose is going to be rid of you. Eventually all good things come, who knew my soul would be at peace, right?" Alfie noticed Evert was silent "Keep praying, fucker."
Evert could hardly breathe anymore and a hissing sound came from his lungs "…et ne nos inducas in tentationem sed libera nos a malo."
Alfie pressed the rosary with all the strength and hatred he had inside him against Frederick Evert's neck and then felt his last breath, "Amen," he finally said releasing his prey who fell lifelessly forward. Alfie Solomons took the rosary with the crucifix from him and he and his two men left the church.
Inside the last member of an anti-Semitic family had died at the hands of a Jew in a Catholic church. Yes, that was worthy of a painting. Or a novel.
.
At home, Rose stared at the clock wondering what was going on, though a part of her mind told her what she knew the answer to.
When Alfie finally opened the door, she ran to him. In his hands Rose saw a rosary that she knew well. She had seen it daily during her hell surrounded by the Everts. Alfie's fingers were red and Rose understood what he had done.
Without saying anything to him she took it from his hand and rested it on a table. Then she kissed his hurt fingers, one by one.
"I love you," she said.
She stood on her tiptoes and kissed him. Alfie reciprocated. Definitely, finally and forever, the past was behind her.
"You're free, Rosie," he said, resting his forehead against hers. "And so am I."
Who were not free were the Everts. They were three souls reunited again, but consuming eternally in the flames of hell.
