She presses a hand across Kit's collarbone, stopping her from coming any closer. Her gaze moves from those deep blues down to where their bodies meet. Yeah, that's close enough. "I feel you in the dark, afraid of what sleep might bring you in the dead of night." Her voice is low for only Kit to hear, especially at this proximity. "I see the way your eyes go blank when you're not present like you should be. I see the grin when you impress one of the Masters, how eager you are to impress, to please... It's so different from the smile you give me. You know my habits; I know your mind."

The thud from inside causes Jade to wince and tears her attention from looking around the hall. What in the hell was that? Whatever hit she assumes the floor had to have been rather large. Had Kit dropped something or had she fallen out of bed? These dorm beds could be lifted rather high. And Jade assumes it’s Kit, because she remembers mention of her roommate being out the night before. And… well… yesterday was Valentine’s Day after all…

Jade awkwardly wrings her fingers together until the door finally opens. She stops, looking at the girl in front of her… and she looks worse for wear. Had she slept at all after Jade dropped her off? Or maybe she’s suffering a massive hangover. Kit says nothing, but leaves the door open for her, so Jade steps inside, closing the door behind her. “Hey. I texted you that I was here. I wanted to check in on you.” She wants to explain what happened last night, but now may not be the best time. She steps in front of Kit and crouches down to her level, running her fingers into the younger girl’s hair. “Hangover?”

ㅤㅤㅤNEXT DAY.

ㅤㅤㅤthe knock at the door isn't heard at first. turning in her bed, kit grumbles as the light shines through a crack in the curtains to rouse her hungover eyes. tossing an arm over her face, a groan resonates in the student's throat when another knock sounds, this time reaching her ears. a vague mumble tells her roommate to answer it but a quick glance to the side tells her that she's alone; her roommate must be at her boyfriends. huh - did not notice that the night before. oh, duh. valentine's day.

ㅤㅤㅤconceding to the fact she has to get out of bed to answer herself, kit rolls sideways and falls to the floor with a thump. ❛❛ㅤow, the fuck -ㅤ❜❜ pushing herself off the floor, she mutters curses under her breath as she eventually the tugs open. the sight of a fresh faced, definitely showered jade, greets her. looking down at her own dishevelled appearance, kit sighs and makes her way back inside, leaving the door open as a silent invitation to enter. sitting on the edge the bed, kit props elbows against her thighs and tucks face into the palms of her hands.

Jade scarfed down another spoonful of stew. It had to have been her third bowl, but it’s been a while since the party have had a proper meal. And who knew when the next time they’d have one was? Probably not until they reached the Bone Reavers. Elora did the best she could with what was found on their journey, but it was amazing what she and their host could do with the proper supplies. Another small noise of contentment escaped her.

Jade looked up at their host when asked a question. Polly. She had been extremely kind so far. A light in this dark and scary forest. You only heard about these types of places in stories. She swallowed before responding. “You see a lot of people out here?” Jade asked. “We’re headed home actually. It’s been a long journey.”

Polly scrubbed at one of the soup bowls, fingers wrinkled from washing the dishes. She was grateful for the company, make no mistake, but things seemed off about the little group of adventurers. "I don't mean to pry, of course," she said. "Your business is your business, and I'm always happy to have guests, but you all look ... well, not like the sort of people I see out here."

Did they at least know where they were? Half of the group looked properly armed, but that didn't mean they knew what sorts of things came out after dark.

“When have you ever known me to let you suffer a fancy dinner alone?” Jade teases, nuzzling Kit’s nose. There have been several over the years that she hasn’t gone to, but because she wasn’t allowed. Otherwise, the knight was always at Kit’s side, suffering through formal wear. “Besides, you’re not the only one being celebrated, Princess. You, uh,” her fingers graze up Kit’s side before pulling her even closer, “planning to show off that cuirass you love so much?”

Jade smiles at Kit’s joy. This is what she wants forever. Just to make the woman in front of her smile, to make her happy. “I told you, I’ve loved you for quite some time. So much of what I’ve done, I’ve done for you,” she whispers. “The stupid gowns, all of our training, all of the nightmares, jumping off the edge of the world… even the Shining Legion. It’s because I love you.”

ㅤㅤㅤthe princess' head immediately shakes from side to side. a part of her wishes those days were left in the past. duties, appearances, decorum - she doesn't necessarily care about any of it. it doesn't feel like her life. it's someone else's. kit tanthalos is merely an imposter in her own title. ❛❛ㅤif i am to suffer this, you have to also. you know, solidarity, and mostly because i don't want to go but will if you are there.ㅤ❜❜

ㅤㅤㅤthis happiness, this type of comfort, has kit's heart racing, and it's not a high she ever wants to come down from. smiling widely as jade's thumb touches her lips, she can't help but steal some kisses in return. never going to get bored of that.ㅤ❛❛ㅤi'm holding you to that,ㅤ❜❜ㅤkit laughs. her next thought, however, is swift to sober such a noise. eyes even start to glisten as she locks jade's words in her memory forever.ㅤ❛❛ㅤthat's all i've ever wanted.ㅤ❜❜
