Jade quickly looks away from the twins. She didn’t want to be so obvious about her concerns and she’s been good at keeping them hidden so far. But she can’t help it. She can’t shake it. And while magic seems to have saved Airk, she still can’t come to terms that it was enough. It's hard to accept after years of living without any sort of magic.
But Elora seems to simply embrace what Jade is thinking. That’s comforting. Because Jade thinks she’s being far too paranoid. Jade’s always been cautious, though. It’s part of the nature of who she is.

“He hasn’t done anything to earn suspicion. He’s actually been very apologetic. Maybe he is fine. But if something happens where he’s not, I know Kit won’t listen.” And Kit is the one she’s worried about getting hurt. “I’m not sure if I believe magic can fix everything. But I know we need it for what happens next. So, you better keep mastering it. You were brilliant out there.” She smiles softly, nudging Elora gently.
Jade has always been practical and that meant magic and mythical items had never truly fit into her ideas of life. At least, not on their own. What she knew to be true is that it isn’t the magic or even mythical armor or sword. It’s the person wielding them. And Elora is the right person to harness magic, just like Kit is the right person to wear the Kymerian Cuirass.
Elora knew that it was a long shot for Jade to have a definite idea of what to do, but she was at least glad that she tried. She was someone that Elora knew that she could TRUST when things got tough, not just to protect Kit and the rest of them, but to fight and prevail. Things were only going to get tougher from here on out, and it would be best for them all to be on the same page...especially after having to see Graydon die like that.

Her gaze follows Jade's to Airk and Kit, Elora giving a little nod. She was still figuring out how she felt about things now, but one thing was for certain: Airk could still be being controlled. Or, at the very least, he had proven that he was more easily coerced than Elora had once thought. Now that she was the fabled princess, and the future empress, she couldn't let herself be caught unawares because of these romantic or not romantic feelings for Airk and Graydon.
The world needs her more than them.
"I'm worried too," Elora admitted, chewing on her lip and then tucking her hair behind her ears. "The last thing that we want to deal with is another betrayal. We have to find a way to keep ourselves grounded when more MAGIC finds it way to us. All I can do is try my hardest, but I can't solve everything. I'm not sure I'm supposed to. If you suspect anything at all, Jade, I need you to tell me."
“I’ll have you removed from your station for this. You’ve overstepped, Commander,” the voice scolds. She hears the discussion faintly from outside the door. The voices go in and out. That one belongs to a woman. Soft, but firm. Accented, similar to her own speech.
“You forget yourself, Princess. Your father is still King and has given me authority to protect Tir Asleen from the savages outside of the Barrier. The Barrier you had made. I’ve done my job,” the other voice retorts. An older man. Gravely voice, condescending tone. She doesn’t like it.
“To protect, not attack on a whim.”
“King Tanthalos trusts my judgment and so should you.”
“I don’t.”
Her hazel gaze is glued to the door. Waiting. The footsteps have come closer and then moved back further several times over during the course of this discussion, but now they come closer again. The door opens and Jade presses back against the wall, anticipating. She listens as the steps get louder and louder, heart racing in her chest, until the door creaks open. There’s nowhere to hide. It’s just Jade, small and afraid, standing so far back against the wall, one might think she’d pass through it.
Her gaze is met with the sight of a woman, her hair almost as red as the small child’s. Jade immediately feels assured. She so rarely sees people with red hair like her. Just her and her sister. And now this woman, whose brown eyes look stunned to see her standing in that room. When she turns her head to speak, Jade barely makes out the quiet words “a child” said with impassioned rage and unmistakable confusion. But she doesn’t hear the rest.
The woman whispers a few moments longer before approaching slow. Jade flinches, pressing even harder into the wall. The woman’s hands move up and she stops walking.
“I won’t hurt you. I promise,” she swears and Jade believes her. She has no reason to, but she does. The woman appears so much kinder, softer than the men she’s been forced to interact with. She loosens her stance against the wall a bit and the woman continues her slow approach, gradually coming down to Jade’s eye level. “I’m Princess Sorsha. What’s your name?”
The small girl bites her lip. Should she give her name? Is it safe?
The princess smiles at her and the child decides.
“Jade.”
The smile grows.
“It’s wonderful to meet you, Jade. Do you mind if I make sure you’re uninjured?” Princess Sorsha asks. Another moment of hesitation. But she really has been so nice. Jade takes a couple steps closer, holds out her arms. The princess gently takes a hold of her small wrists, checking over her skin and sliding up dirty sleeves. She very deliberately and tenderly reviews Jade’s arms and legs, even her back. “Just a few scrapes and cuts. Nothing a bath can’t help–” The princess pauses, lifting Jade’s curls from the back of her neck. Jade quietly waits, but wonders why she’s suddenly stopped. She doesn’t ask.
The princess finally lowers her hair and gently turns Jade back around.
“You’re a very brave girl, Jade. And we are going to take good care of you,” the princess promises. Jade smiles.
“Your Majesty! Down here!”
It comes from outside the door. The princess turns her head to look. Jade’s hazel gaze follows movement at the door. A mess of brown hair. Blue eyes full of wonder. A toddler runs through the crack in the door on chubby legs, her giggles loud and full of mischief.
“Momma! I find you!”
“What are you doing in here?” Princess Sorsha chuckles, reaching out to grab the toddler’s hand and guiding her over. Jade watches intently. She was always the youngest back home, so she’s never been around too many babies. Without even realizing, she lowers down a little. “Jade, this is my daughter, Kit.”
Kit stares up at her and gives a toothy grin and a hard wave.
“Hi!” Kit exclaims. And Jade can’t help her own grin. This is the most welcomed she’s felt since arriving. She waves back.
“Hi.”
“It seems you’ve made a new friend, Kit. This is Jade. Can you say ‘Jade’?” Princess Sorsha says, her voice light and airy specifically for the toddler.
“Jay!”
“Almost,” Sorsha chuckles.
“How old is she?” Jade asks. The longest sentence she’s formed.
“She’s almost two.” The princess looks back at her. “You can hold her hand if she’ll let you.” Jade reaches out. Kit, seeing the opportunity, quickly latches onto the older girl’s two fingers.
More rushing footsteps outside until the door opens. But Jade is much too distracted by her new “friend” to look up. She does notice the princess stand and walk away from them, leaving Jade to play with Kit.
“She gets around so fast. I almost miss when they couldn’t walk,” Jade hears a man say. His voice has a tone of good humor and amusement, but also an undertone of apology. “What’s going on? Who’s this?” Jade glances upward a moment, taking in a tall man, his long hair braided in places and his black wardrobe nicely tailored to him. In his arms is another toddler who looks almost exactly like the little girl holding onto Jade’s arm and making her way to her shoulder.
She notices Sorsha’s voice lower, the only words she’s able to make out being “Kael”, “Bone Reavers”, and “slaughtered her family”. Her mind takes her back to wild flame, haunting screams, and arrows in her mother’s chest. Her eyes water with tears… and then she hears her name. Well, as close as Kit can get to her name, and her attention is back to the toddler that’s playing with red curls. She shuts out the rest of the princess’ talk, deciding she doesn’t want to hear more.
When she looks up again, the princess is calling for her and picking up Kit. Princess Sorsha holds out her hand.
“We are going to get you bathed and fed and then find you a much nicer place to stay.” Jade stands up and takes her hand, holds tight to her refuge. Princess Sorsha guides her out of the room and into a wide corridor. The man that Jade assumes is her husband, follows behind them. Up a few flight of stairs and Jade is met with the sight of palace walls, sunlight filtering in through large windows.
Several women rush forward toward the princess and her husband. But Jade notices a little girl around her age, her light blonde hair pulled back by a bandana. She seems to be following one of the ladies that approached the princess. The blonde girl gives a friendly smile. Jade decides she prefers it up here than down in whatever room she was trapped in for the last few days.
“Welcome to Tir Asleen, Jade. As long as you want it, this will be your home,” Princess Sorsha promised, gently squeezing her hand. After days of fear and anxiety and screaming and tears, Jade finally feels some relief. She still misses her mom and still hopes that Princess Sorsha can maybe find her sister. But for the first time since the attack and for a long time after this moment, she feels at home.
