Jade scoffs, shaking her head. She believes Kit. She knows it most likely is nothing. It always is. That’s part of the problem. Does Jade also mean nothing? Does Kit just enjoy blurring the lines of their friendship occasionally, because it’s fun? Because Jade constantly wonders if she’s just like any other girl Kit sometimes brings back to their motels. And for a moment, she’d had a sliver of hope, but now…

“Unbelievable. You can’t even bring yourself to say it again. Why do I even-” She stops, takes a deep breath. She’s worked up, can’t even feel the freezing cold Kit mentioned anymore. “I’m done. I’m not waiting around anymore for you to figure this out, figure us out. It hurts too much.” She turns away again, going to the nearest stairwell. She needs to get away from here.
ㅤㅤㅤkit grabs her jacket as she follows jade out of the room, the girl she had brought back left scrambling for her own shirt. she wants to tell jade that nothing happened, that she quit before her own shirt could be removed, but jade is walking too fast, and kit is stumbling over her inability to multi task. eventually, she manages to detangle the jacket from herself and puts it on properly. ❛❛ will you just calm down a second, ❜❜ kit breathes out, coming to a stop when jade does.

ㅤㅤㅤlifting a hand, kit indicates the room they've just left. ❛❛ that was nothing - didn't mean anything, ❜❜ she explains. it's left unsaid how wrong, how unsatisfying it felt. like something was missing. it stopped as quickly as it started, and - fuck, this gonna be all over twitter. exhaling the breath she didn't know she was holding, the musician drops arms to her side. ❛❛ i said that that shit didn't mean anything, ❜❜ kit repeats. ❛❛ can we just - can we just go back inside? it's fucking freezing out here. ❜❜

Years of wanting to be a knight and what did she want to be doing instead of a night patrol? Sleeping. In her bed. With the princess. Or in the princess’ bed, not picky on that front. She walked along the top of the wall for Mothers knew how many times, coming to one of the guard stations. One of the other knights was already seated there, feet kicked up onto the wall, when a voice called up from below. Jade looked over the edge of the wall, finding a young woman. What was she doing out there so late in the night on her own? “And who might you be?” Jade called down.

The gates of Tir Asleen stood before her and for a moment Tilda could simply not believe that she had come this far. Months on the road, hunger and cold, she had endured it all. For this. She had reached her destiny only to find the doors locked, the guards patrolling, the all too familiar sound of a city preparing for war rang in her ears as she stepped closer. Raising her eyes to the guard tower she called out: "Forgive me, but is there any chance a weary traveller can find shelter here?"
@tanthalos

"I'm sorry. I didn't think they'd put me on duty for the tournament. Guess more of the men signed up than they thought," Jade lies, following Kit through palace corridors. She's very rarely lied to Kit before. And if she has, they've all been small details in a larger true story (like the three porcupine quills versus the actual thirty). But she knows the princess well and knows that she's disappointed. I'll make it up to her, Jade thinks. She's not sure how, but she'll figure it out. "I'll still be at the opening banquet with you tonight."

“Kit, you’ve got to sit still,” Jade laughs, running a finger through a strand of hair she’s sectioned off. “I can’t finish this if you keep moving your head about.” Once she’s gotten Kit to hold still again, her fingers make quick work of plaiting the princess’s long, dark hair. Jade’s had years of practice on her own hair. Kit’s is somewhat easier to sort through and section out, her fingers never lost along the twists and turns. As if she knows Kit as well as herself. When she finishes, she runs her fingers through the hair that the braids now frame. Looking over Kit’s shoulder, she observes her work in the vanity mirror.

“Perfect,” she says softly, so close to the princess’s ear. She steps away from the chair, giving Kit room to stand up. Jade takes a moment to straighten out the dress she’s forced herself to wear, longing for the feel of the armor she’ll be clandestinely donning in tomorrow’s tournament. When she looks up at Kit again, she doesn’t realize she’s stopped breathing. Heart races as her gaze moves up and down the young woman in front of her in a way so unsubtle, she mentally reprimands herself when their eyes meet again. She can’t be so obvious with her feelings. But Mothers, she’s so beautiful. “We should get going. Can’t be late for the welcome feast… This whole tournament is to celebrate your sixteenth birthday, after all.”
