HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 28
Scar x Treasure Planet

(Background nebula courtesy of ESA/Hubble)
For Scar I chose the incredible and underrated Disney move, Treasure Planet!
I loved Treasure Planet as a kid and still consider it one of the best animated Disney movies ever. However, it didn't do well critically (for various reasons I won't get into) and so there's never anything Treasure Planet related at the parks and lots of people have never seen it, which is such a shame.
I picked this movie for Scar because I am trying to manifest Scar watching Treasure Planet someday. This movie is like if a team of Disney animators sat down and brainstormed a list of stuff Scar has said he likes and then made a movie out of it.
To learn more about Treasure Planet and see why I really hope Scar watches it, please continue below the cut.

Treasure Planet is a sci-fi adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. The story follows a young man named Jim Hawkins who grows up on stories about the legendary space pirate, Captain Flint. Upon finding a map to the fabled Treasure Planet, Jim embarks on a journey to find the treasure.
In his adventures across the vastness of space, he makes friends, sails through nebulas, and faces down dangerous space pirates who want the treasure for themselves. The story is action-packed and heartfelt, with a strong cast of memorable characters and a beautiful, astronautical setting.
If you haven't seen Treasure Planet I highly recommend watching it. It's only about an hour and a half long and it's well worth the time.

This is Jim Hawkins

Did I mention that the movie is beautiful? It's a mix of traditional and computer animation that works very well for the genre.

Bonus: I want to show you my favourite character even though I didn't use her as a reference at all.

Captain Amelia my beloved
Aw I love this!!! You should put it on the HC reddit too so Doc sees it <3

Hermit-a-Day May, day 14 (belated): Docm77. Today's style/medium is the original covers of the Rainbow Magic: Rainbow Fairies series by Daisy Meadows! This was inspired partially because of Doc's elytra and partially because I just thought it would be really funny. Having now finished the piece, I can confirm that it's really funny (to me, at least). References and details under the read more!
References: the Rainbow Magic books have a lot of different cover styles, especially the first few mini-series. I found what seemed to be the most original (and what I remembered seeing as a kid) and went with that. I referenced Fern the Green Fairy most closely, but checked all of the Rainbow Fairies for various details (hair highlights, facial expressions, etc.). The character art for the books has definitely gotten a little better and smoother over the years, but I wanted to capture that slightly awkward first-run look.

Random details: I had to do all the stripes and clouds and lettering and whatnot by hand, which is...why I didn't manage to post this on the right day. Now that I have the base, though, I could totally do a whole series of hermits in this style and I'm kind of ridiculously tempted to. The hair shading was SO hard to work with you don't understand. Going from dark hair to stark white highlight is the antithesis of my natural style and it still looks super weird to me but. I did my best. Also for the record it is not easy to translate a bright green adult man with a beard into the cutesy fairy girl style. I consciously had to make the way I was drawing hands worse at one point because they looked too complex and realistic for the style. I think drawing those crocs killed a part of my soul. Thank you and goodnight.

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 23
TangoTek x Yu-Gi-Oh

For Tango I picked Yu-Gi-Oh!!
Most people know Yu-Gi-Oh! as a cartoon and card game, but in the original story the pharoah spirit who possesses Yugi is known as the King of Games, as in, all games. So who better to represent Yu-Gi-Oh! than the creator and dungeon master of Decked Out, the ultimate game within a game?
To learn more about Yu-Gi-Oh! and see my style references, continue below the cut.
@hermitadaymay
(The King of Games would definitely donate to Gamers Outreach)
Yu-Gi-Oh! is a manga and anime series about a boy named Yugi Mutou who solves a cursed puzzle from ancient Egypt and is then possessed by the spirit of a ruthless Pharoah who has lost all his memories.
"Ruthless?" I can hear fans of the anime saying. "The Pharoah is a good guy!"
Incorrect! He only becomes a good guy later. Early on he is literally Ancient Egyptian Jigsaw.
In the manga, the Pharoah takes over Yugi's body whenever Yugi is in danger, whether he wants it or not, and manipulates people into agreeing to rigged, high stakes Shadow Games. Once they inevitably lose, he traps them in a Penalty Game (a poetic justice torture scenario) for the rest of their lives or possibly all of eternity depending on the situation. It's really messed up! Highlights of early Yu-Gi-Oh Penalty Games include:
Lighting a guy on fire
Blinding a guy
Telltale Heart-ing a guy
Driving a guy so crazy his rips out his own eye
Blowing a guy up
Envenomating a guy with his own pet scorpion
Electrocuting people
Forcing a guy to endure an illusion of eternal zombie attacks
Trapping people in hell forever
...and more!
The show is way more family friendly and follows a significantly mellowed-out Pharoah and his friends as they battle bad guys with card games that summon monsters to fight on their behalf. It's pretty fun an campy!
However, Yu-Gi-Oh! the show is fairly well known so I also wanted to take this opportunity to introduce everyone to season 0 manga Pharoah, who is literally a serial killing ghost with a gambling problem that's possessing a 16 year old.
If you had an Egyptology phase as a kid, give Yu-Gi-Oh! a watch. If you watched Yu-Gi-Oh! as a kid, go read the early manga.
Style references:

There he is, the King of Games. The heart of the cards guides him but he also full on just, like, cheats too.

Malik, on the left, and Bakura, on the right. These two are villains from the show who are also teenagers possessed by (evil) Egyptian spirits that were trapped in cursed metal knick-knacks. Everyone in this show has Hair with a capital H.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! title design.

what are these nerds talking about?
kinda just a redraw of the screenshot. original under cut :]

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 17
EthosLab x Yu Yu Hakusho

For Etho I chose the #1 favourite anime of my childhood, Yu Yu Hakusho!
I sincerely considered rendering Etho in the style of Naruto because I thought it would be funny if I literally just drew Kakashi with a maple leaf patch. However, I actually don't like Naruto very much so I couldn't use that style for this challenge.
So instead I picked YYH because it is by far my favourite shonen anime of all time and still one of the favorite anime in general (possibly my top fav to this day). Plus one of the main cast is a fox demon so, y'know, perfect chance to represent the popular kitsune!Etho fanon.
If you want to learn more about Yu Yu Hakusho and see my style references, continue below the cut!
(Donating to Gamer's Outreach is cool and neat)
Yu Yu Hakusho is a 1990s anime based off of a manga series by the same name. The story follows a delinquent teen named Yusuke Urameshi who opens the show by immediately dying. However he wasn't meant to die, and so he is granted a second chance at life. In return for this second chance, he agrees to become a spirit detective under the lord of the Spirit World, Koenma.
As a spirit detective, it is Yusuke's duty to track down spirits and demons who make their way into the human world and defeat them so they can be returned to the demon realm. Along the way he makes new friends, unlocks powers, and uncovers insidious plots that he must defend the human world against.
The show follows a typical shonen arc (fight bad guy, get defeated, train, power up, fight bad guy again, etc etc) but characters have continuous arcs throughout as they get to know each other and learn more about themselves. The charm of this show comes from the main team of detectives, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei, and their chemistry together and with their other friends.
If you like shonen anime but get a little bored of the filler, I highly recommend Yu Yu Hakusho. It has all the best parts of shonen while keeping your attention with fun characters, unique fights, and, at times, surprisingly high stakes.
Style references:

The gang! From left to right are Kuwabara, Yusuke, Hiei, and Kurama. This is one of the many promo art pieces the creator has released that make them look like a boyband. I used this as a style reference for Etho's clothing, but I rendered him in the style of the show itself rather than the promo art.

The show has the same design language but simpler shading. This is also Kurama by the way, he's the kitsune.
