HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 23

TangoTek x Yu-Gi-Oh

A drawing of Minecraft youtuber TangoTek in his blue season 9 Decked Out dungeon master skin in the style of Yu-Gi-Oh. He is smiling wickedly and throwing a bunch of game pieces at the viewer which resemble Etho, Cubfan, GeminiTay, Hypnotizd, GoodTimesWithScar, a trident drowned, a ravager, and a warden. Above him is his name written in white in a regal, 3-D looking font with his name written again in red in katakana behind it.

For Tango I picked Yu-Gi-Oh!!

Most people know Yu-Gi-Oh! as a cartoon and card game, but in the original story the pharoah spirit who possesses Yugi is known as the King of Games, as in, all games. So who better to represent Yu-Gi-Oh! than the creator and dungeon master of Decked Out, the ultimate game within a game?

To learn more about Yu-Gi-Oh! and see my style references, continue below the cut.

@hermitadaymay

(The King of Games would definitely donate to Gamers Outreach)

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a manga and anime series about a boy named Yugi Mutou who solves a cursed puzzle from ancient Egypt and is then possessed by the spirit of a ruthless Pharoah who has lost all his memories.

"Ruthless?" I can hear fans of the anime saying. "The Pharoah is a good guy!"

Incorrect! He only becomes a good guy later. Early on he is literally Ancient Egyptian Jigsaw.

In the manga, the Pharoah takes over Yugi's body whenever Yugi is in danger, whether he wants it or not, and manipulates people into agreeing to rigged, high stakes Shadow Games. Once they inevitably lose, he traps them in a Penalty Game (a poetic justice torture scenario) for the rest of their lives or possibly all of eternity depending on the situation. It's really messed up! Highlights of early Yu-Gi-Oh Penalty Games include:

Lighting a guy on fire

Blinding a guy

Telltale Heart-ing a guy

Driving a guy so crazy his rips out his own eye

Blowing a guy up

Envenomating a guy with his own pet scorpion

Electrocuting people

Forcing a guy to endure an illusion of eternal zombie attacks

Trapping people in hell forever

...and more!

The show is way more family friendly and follows a significantly mellowed-out Pharoah and his friends as they battle bad guys with card games that summon monsters to fight on their behalf. It's pretty fun an campy!

However, Yu-Gi-Oh! the show is fairly well known so I also wanted to take this opportunity to introduce everyone to season 0 manga Pharoah, who is literally a serial killing ghost with a gambling problem that's possessing a 16 year old.

If you had an Egyptology phase as a kid, give Yu-Gi-Oh! a watch. If you watched Yu-Gi-Oh! as a kid, go read the early manga.

Style references:

An image of the Pharoah from Yu-Gi-Oh. Technically this is Yugi Mutou's body, but Yugi and the Pharoah look pretty much the same anyway (you do get to see flashbacks to Egypt later in the show) so it doesn't matter. He is wearing full body leather with a blue jacket over his shoulders like a cape. On his arm is a machine that has a deck of cards in it and a surface to play cards - the machine is not operating in the picture but when it's on it projects holograms of monsters. Around the Pharoah's neck is a big metal pyramid charm on a chain. His hair is indescribable but I will try. Picture a guy with spikey black hair. Spikier. Now imagine the spikes are massive and basically making the silhouette of a starfish. Now imagine his bangs are blonde lightning bolts that go over the starfish arms but also have long strands in the front that are still bangs. The black starfish spikes are also outlined in purplish-red, like he has frosted tips but purplish-red. Also his eyes are the same purplish-red color. Peak anime protagonist design if you ask me.

There he is, the King of Games. The heart of the cards guides him but he also full on just, like, cheats too.

An image thats split across the middle in a dramatic diagonal. On the left is a tan guy in profile with really spikey sandy blonde hair and purple eyes. He is smiling maliciously and has a golden eye glowing on his forehead. He also has a cool spiked dangly earring. On the right is a really pale guy with brown eyes and white fluffy-but-still-spikey hair. He is glaring towards the viewer. The whole image has a purple fog over it because they are in the Shadow Realm. Both of these guys are villains and as a preteen watching this show it was very cool when they fought each other. Evil Bakura was my fav and Evil Malik is literally the worst.

Malik, on the left, and Bakura, on the right. These two are villains from the show who are also teenagers possessed by (evil) Egyptian spirits that were trapped in cursed metal knick-knacks. Everyone in this show has Hair with a capital H.

The word Yu-Gi-Oh! written in a 3D, metallic looking font. The letters are in a silvery white serif font and are designed to look embossed and pointy in the middle, like looking down on a pyramid from above. Behind the English text is the same name written in red kanji (I assume - I can't read kanji).

The Yu-Gi-Oh! title design.

Comic panel 1 out of 3. A drawing of Docm77 discussing with Pearlescentmoon and TangoTek about his mailbox. Doc has speech bubbles of a mailbox and a Minecraft boat to resemble his explanations. Pearl and Tango are listening, though hesitant with Doc's plans. End ID.
Comic panel 2 out of 3. On the left of the image, Tango takes out his communicator and types out in-game chat:
"Etho
Doc wants his mailbox
Get on that
M'kay?"
Doc and Pearl are in the background, with Doc still talking and Pearl still reluctant. On the right of the image, Tango notices Etho come into view. End ID.
Comic panel 3 out of 3. Tango bursts out laughing as Etho frantically waves his hands and shakes his head no. Doc says to Tango, "I just need a mailbox," and hasn't noticed Etho behind him. He looks a bit confused. There is bold text "HAHAHAH" coming from Tango to resemble how loud he is. End ID.

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 17

EthosLab x Yu Yu Hakusho

Minecraft youtuber EthosLab in the style of Yu Yu Hakusho. He has a fox tail and ears and his eye scar is glowing, along with matching scars on his forearm. His hand is enveloped in spiritual energy that is reminiscent of redstone because I color picked an image of redstone to make it. The rest of him is also glowing with a red aura. Above him is his name in a white, handwritten font that is reminiscent of an ink stamp on a swirling blue background.

For Etho I chose the #1 favourite anime of my childhood, Yu Yu Hakusho!

I sincerely considered rendering Etho in the style of Naruto because I thought it would be funny if I literally just drew Kakashi with a maple leaf patch. However, I actually don't like Naruto very much so I couldn't use that style for this challenge.

So instead I picked YYH because it is by far my favourite shonen anime of all time and still one of the favorite anime in general (possibly my top fav to this day). Plus one of the main cast is a fox demon so, y'know, perfect chance to represent the popular kitsune!Etho fanon.

If you want to learn more about Yu Yu Hakusho and see my style references, continue below the cut!

(Donating to Gamer's Outreach is cool and neat)

Yu Yu Hakusho is a 1990s anime based off of a manga series by the same name. The story follows a delinquent teen named Yusuke Urameshi who opens the show by immediately dying. However he wasn't meant to die, and so he is granted a second chance at life. In return for this second chance, he agrees to become a spirit detective under the lord of the Spirit World, Koenma.

As a spirit detective, it is Yusuke's duty to track down spirits and demons who make their way into the human world and defeat them so they can be returned to the demon realm. Along the way he makes new friends, unlocks powers, and uncovers insidious plots that he must defend the human world against.

The show follows a typical shonen arc (fight bad guy, get defeated, train, power up, fight bad guy again, etc etc) but characters have continuous arcs throughout as they get to know each other and learn more about themselves. The charm of this show comes from the main team of detectives, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei, and their chemistry together and with their other friends.

If you like shonen anime but get a little bored of the filler, I highly recommend Yu Yu Hakusho. It has all the best parts of shonen while keeping your attention with fun characters, unique fights, and, at times, surprisingly high stakes.

Style references:

Four young men standing in a row. The tallest one on the left, Kuwabara, has red hair and is shirtless under a brown trench coat. Next to him is Yusuke, the protagonist, dressed in a blue tank top and ripped blue pants. Beside Yusuke is the shortest member of the team, Hiei, who has spikey black hair in the shape of a flame and is dressed head to toe in black. The last in the group is Kurama, who has long, pretty red hair and is dressed in a dark red tunic.

The gang! From left to right are Kuwabara, Yusuke, Hiei, and Kurama. This is one of the many promo art pieces the creator has released that make them look like a boyband. I used this as a style reference for Etho's clothing, but I rendered him in the style of the show itself rather than the promo art.

An image of Kurama in his natural demon form. As a demon, he has golden eyes, fox ears, and long silver hair. He also has a fox tail but he is only visible from the waist up in this image so the tail isn't pictured. He looks concerned about something in this shot and is standing in a swirling fog.

The show has the same design language but simpler shading. This is also Kurama by the way, he's the kitsune.

Yu Yu Hakusho written in an font that looks like white ink stamped onto background of swirling blue and turquoise smoke. Yu Yu is at the top in a big font and Hakusho is beneath it in a smaller font. The entire image is outlined in a thin white line.

yes doc yeS DOC *YES DOC*

A tweet from a redacted user that reads: "Maybe keep it off hermitcraft." @docm77 replies: "Well, look at it on a personal level. When you say "keep it off", that means Cleo and Gem are not welcome. That is not the case though. The reality is, wether you like it or not, I love them both dearly and they ain't going nowhere."

Doc is fighting the good fight on Twitter (calling out people who hate his rainbow beacon) and idk I thought this was very sweet
