New meme format just dropped

One thing my re-introduction into the ATLA fandom has brought to my attention is how the fandom reacts and interprets Zukos character after his redemption arc. Or at least the thing people speak about most in regulates to Zuko.

The most common portrayal of this character I see is this social awkward dork with a heart made of gold, a kicked puppy who needs protecting.

First of all: no. Secondly: no.

Yes, when he first meets the gaang he is very socially awkward. Keep in mind he hasn’t had social interactions with anyone his age for 4ish years- or really anyone except his uncle. He is also talking to the group of children he was hunting down and was actively hostile towards for two seasons.

Exhibit B would be his date with Jin in Ba Sing Se. Which again, a first date, it’s bound to be awkward at times. Zuko does warm up to her after being together a while.



He’s still in the process of figuring out how to interact with others and how to react to certain things. However, after comfortable with people he is shown to significantly less awkward (unless placed into an awkward situation)

Another thing people fail to realize is he’s still very much an angry character. That didn’t leave when had his redemption arc.

And finally: he is the farthest thing from a kicked puppy. He more than capable of handling himself and I don’t think enough people give the credit for that. Not only did he confront his father but he also fought his sister in an Agni Kai, learned to delegate lightning through pure spite, and persisted on numerous occasions through adversity.

He couldn’t have done it without help but he has a strong spirit and is a strong character. Something that is often overshadowed by the fandom in favour of his more soft aspects. However a balance of both is what makes him so compelling. And all if this isn’t even mentioning the comics.

My fav head canon is that Time hates swearing not because he sees everyone as kids, but because when he was a kid living with the kokiri, there was a saying that went “Cursing brings curses” and to this day he believes swearing will cause bad luck and is genuinely concerned for those with potty mouths (which, let’s face it, is probably everyone. They all say fuck except for Time)
