And in the show before dream unmakes him, corinthian just looks so sad, I'm sure he'd be crying too but he has no eyes so... they are both hurt and disappointed

things about the corinthian i feel are vital to understanding his character but are so glossed over even in the comics: the corinthian is old

when dream finally comes to remake the corinthian, we get this panel

before orpheus was born. and therefore dream made the first corinthian in ancient greek times or earlier, he's at least 3000 years old

and the corinthian going walkabout only started in the last few centuries - it starts in the 18th century, when dream grants his request to walk the waking world (supervised), but it's not until the late 1800s/early 1900s that he actually rebels properly

this isn't a nightmare who was created and then immediately tried to leave

this is someone who played perfect son for millenia, before finally having enough

he's on such informal terms with dream, with lucienne, because he's known them for countless centuries, and he's convinced he's in the right because he tried it dream's way, for an extremely long time

and dream saying "i created you poorly, then", that's not talking about a recent mistake. that's dream talking about how different he was eons ago, and how much he feels he's learned in that time

he intends it to take the blame off the corinthian, but god, how hurtful those words must come across

because it's not just your creator saying you fucked up. this is someone who for thousands and thousands of years praised you as his finest creation, brought you out and showed you off, and that formed who you were. and you felt you weren't fulfilling your purpose as well as you could be, so you tried to do it differently, but he disapproved, told you this wasn't what you were made for. you're convinced you're in the right, however, so you go okay, i'll prove it to you. i'll show you that this is what i was supposed to be doing in the first place

and not only does he not see it, he tells you your entire existence was a bad decision. all those centuries doing what you were told, and he doesn't care. all he sees is your mistakes, and he doesn't even see you as enough of a person to see them as your mistakes - this was his. it was his mistake for creating you, because he didn't realise you would inevitably turn out like this. all the independence and freedom you fought for, turning your back on his love and praise because you needed to be your own person, worthless. you were never free at all. you were always destined to become this. not even a villain. an annoyance, at best. he's not mad at you, he's not scared of you, he's just disappointed. in himself.
