A thought: Mario in the ROTG AU became a spirit by saving Luigi somehow, like how Jack Frost saved his sister in the original movie. As such, Jack! Mario develops a close bond with Sandy! Luigi, instead of North! Peach, despite the former not remembering their connection yet.

 Ooh, that’s a cool idea. I’m guessing he saved his brother from a fire instead of a frozen lake.   And I wonder when and how Luigi would turn into the spirit of dreams?
